I just purchased a leather bag that is small and fits on a hip belt for my granddaughter. She thought it was really cute and stylish. Was inexpensive, email me if you'd like to know where I got it.

I have been using crutches for two years, sometine 2 and sometimes 1, I found a backpack difficult as I had to take it off everytime I wanted something and balance myself and crutches, not easy. I find cross body bags much more convenient.

Backpacks are awkward to handle with crutches. I would make a small bag to hank around her neck that she can get to easily. They can be made of a beautiful fabric, or jeans material with a pocket on the side, or leather from an old leather coat. I bought a small bag that was made of denim and it is very handy to get to and it holds just the essentials. It was made by residents of a nursing home as a fund raiser for their craft department.

Yep nothing on the Crutches .... more like a smaller Messenger bag style with Strap cross wise the body, so she really wouldn't have to take it off... Just think of the Cool fabrics you could make this of in her Favorite Colors and Prints..

My friend had multiple surgeries on her leg requiring her to be on crutches for almost a full year and she preferred to use a cross body purse that fit snug rather than having something that hung from her crutches.

Do please make sure that any bag you make also has a way to tie, snap, or Velcro to the bottom of the bag to the crutch so it will not swing as she walks and knock her off balance.

Thanks everyone. I forgot about the balance thing. I will make her a few small messenger/cross over bags. That way she can change them to match her moods.

Hi All, I wanted to respond to this thread because I received a TON of traffic on my blog about the crutch bag pattern. After reading this thread I wanted to share my own experience with using the bag that is on the crutch. I made it to hold small things like a water bottle, a pen, my glasses, my keys etc. Those small things you need without having to lug around a huge back pack. It is true you don't want to make your bag too big or put very heavy things in it. I did use both my rucksack along with this bag and the heavy stuff went into the rucksack.

I was on crutches for 2 months before surgery and 9 weeks after surgery and I will say it was convenient to have something small on the crutch.

If you need help putting one together just let me know! Thanks all! And good luck to you with your daughter's surgery and I hope all will be well!
