When I want to put notes in MY books or patterns, i attach a strip of REMOVABLE tape on the page and write on that. Can be easily removed if desired with no damage to the paper.

I belong to a guild and one of the officers; owning her own LA business said she made a new pattern and it was her copyright but I found the pattern in McCalls quilting mag. from years past; I mentioned it and was scolded for doing so. But it was not hers, she just used new fabric for her pattern she took out of the mag. I had no idea what to say or do after that?

I do not borrow nor lend. If I see a pattern I perhaps do not have, I will buy the book or pattern and have given new patterns away I decided not to use. I do have pattern back to the 1800's.

Except in VERY rare instances, I don't lend anything to anyone. Seems like whenever I lend something out, I never get it back ... or if I finally do, I've had to remind the person about it (sometimes repeatedly), and that makes me uncomfortable.
I don't generally ask to borrow anything, either, including money. |
There's a great discussion all about copyright issues here:

No loaning or borrowing for me. I often take a copy (I make only for myself to use and keep the original safe) to class b/c either I don't want to lug a book, or I'm afraid I'm going to lose the pattern before I get home to finish my project.

I took my ORIGINAL book to a store to copy the pattern pieces
the pattern clearly stated that it needed to be enlarged 200% copy store refused to enlarge the pattern as "it would breach copyright" they also folded my book up terribly manager refused to do anything because I was breaching the copyright according to their interpretation |
oh I love having to explain to the copy store people. usually it's stated right there on the book page, so I make them read that!
