When I want to put notes in MY books or patterns, i attach a strip of REMOVABLE tape on the page and write on that. Can be easily removed if desired with no damage to the paper.

I belong to a guild and one of the officers; owning her own LA business said she made a new pattern and it was her copyright but I found the pattern in McCalls quilting mag. from years past; I mentioned it and was scolded for doing so. But it was not hers, she just used new fabric for her pattern she took out of the mag. I had no idea what to say or do after that?

I do not borrow nor lend. If I see a pattern I perhaps do not have, I will buy the book or pattern and have given new patterns away I decided not to use. I do have pattern back to the 1800's.

quiltapillow I see that lots I have a lot of old quilt magazines and there are really lots being copied and saying copyright also new ones slightly changed Stack and Whack first came out then someone copied and called it one block wonder only setting changed probably did it wit an EQ something then earlier there was one called square dance "took that class" bought the book and had a pattern for us to make our own pattern now someone as came out with one called the twister same pattern but book more expensive because it includes the template I also see lots of old patterns like this so I really wonder just what does copyright mean??????

Except in VERY rare instances, I don't lend anything to anyone. Seems like whenever I lend something out, I never get it back ... or if I finally do, I've had to remind the person about it (sometimes repeatedly), and that makes me uncomfortable.

I don't generally ask to borrow anything, either, including money.

There's a great discussion all about copyright issues here:

quiltapillow, your guild officer is 'misguided' in more ways than one!

No loaning or borrowing for me. I often take a copy (I make only for myself to use and keep the original safe) to class b/c either I don't want to lug a book, or I'm afraid I'm going to lose the pattern before I get home to finish my project.

What you and your friend are doing is called copyright infringement. You paid for one pattern and you wind up with two patterns. That's against the law, plain and simple.

I took my ORIGINAL book to a store to copy the pattern pieces

the pattern clearly stated that it needed to be enlarged 200%

copy store refused to enlarge the pattern as "it would breach copyright"

they also folded my book up terribly

manager refused to do anything because I was breaching the copyright according to their interpretation

oh I love having to explain to the copy store people. usually it's stated right there on the book page, so I make them read that!
