the Ten Minute Block, kind of like a Cathedral Window... but way easier...

They both have wonderful free patterns and examples of simple yet complex looking patterns with very easy to comprehend instructions.

Thanks! I bookmarked them.

Also, I've found that using busier prints on simpler patterns also makes the quilt look more complicated than it was.

I just picked up a pattern for the French Braid, but haven't studied it.

I want to study some of the colorways to see how to set them up for maximum effect. Thanks!

There are tons on here, just do a search. Here's the one I did. The hardest part is selecting the colors. Assembly is very easy! The first braid section took me 1 hr, 15 min. The rest were faster.

What tips can you give me on selecting color?

I had been collecting the yellows & pinks for awhile. I took everything I had and laid them out in what I thought would be a good order. Then I stared at it for awhile, re-arranged, stared some more. Then I got the camera out, took some pics and uploaded to the computer. I think it's easier to pick out the ones you should eliminate that way. I had one in particular that had one color background, but the foreground is what stood out to me, so I moved it and liked the result better. I say if you are selecting from your stash, pick several more than you need and arrange in color groups from light to dark. I think the book suggests the colors flow from one to another. Lots of experimentation! I'd love to do one in blues, greens, purples. Someone on the board (probably more than one person) has one with appliqued flower vines on the separator strips...gorgeous!

Thanks for the tips. I'll take a look at the board and see what I can find.

I like the Warm Wishes pattern. The tube quilt looks interesting. I'm spacially challenged so I'll have to practice.

Very Nice! I'll check it out. How did you get the color on the "curve"?

Any X block pattern.

GizmoFan13577 06-09-2011 02:54 AM

Very easy while looking complicated...BQ Quilt by Maple Island. Love the 3D picture frame look!

Buckeye Rose 06-09-2011 03:06 AM

a bargello is way easier than it looked at the start. I made a couple table runners to practice with before starting a bed sized quilt and was amazed at how simply it all went together.

I found the 'Wings of Eagles' block to be a lot easier than I thought it would be.

Thanks for all the good tips of easy quilts. Seems like fast and easy is the only way I can get any quilts made.

I like the warm wishes quilt. Depending on the arrangement, or if you like fussy cutting blocks, it can make beautiful designs. This one is all 5" blocks. The strip blocks are 1 1/2" strips sewn together and cut into 5" blocks. Went very fast!

patski 06-09-2011 05:03 AM

I am doing a crazy quilt, its fun but when finished it looks like lots more work than it takes

I love the triple Irish Chain. It is - bascially - a four patch that is that actually 25 pieces. And then a big blocks edged with smaller blocks. REALLY EASY. This is one time that strip piecing is definetly your friend.

kateyb 06-09-2011 05:11 AM

The Warm Wishes is quick and easy especially with strip piecing. It is also a great way to show off a pretty floral or an animal print.
I love doing stack and whacks. They are easier than they look and I have so much fun doing them. I have most of Bethany Reynolds books. I consider them a great investment for the sheer fun I get making the quilts.

Quiltville's Pineapple Blossom is a good one. Our quilt class did it as a Mystery Quilt a couple of years ago. Everyone loved it !

Lin in Maine . . need to update my info.

0tis 06-09-2011 05:31 AM

The ones I tried- bargello, folded dahlia, spicy spiral...Now one that I have not conquered and I have tried three times = lone star and Y seams.

debcavan 06-09-2011 05:32 AM

Single Irish chain is so impressive to non quilters and of course is just a solid block and a nine patch. It is so beautiful with it's diagonal lines of small blocks

I have a book that's called 9 patch pizzaz and she sometimes calls it a potato chip quilt, because you can't make just one.

dunster 06-09-2011 05:47 AM

What's amazing is that what seems hard to you now will seem easy after you get more practice. Keep on stretching your boundaries and don't make the same quilt over and over. You're smart to want something new to do that lets you practice the 1/4" seam.

I agree with others who have suggested French Braid. It gives tremendous bang for the buck and really makes you think about fabric selection. OBW is another easy-to-make quilt that gets a lot of attention.

Peckish, that is one gorgeous quilt! Found the tutorial on your blog, which is full of good stuff, I might add!

Not Your Grandmother's Tumbling Blocks. It looks very complicated, but if you can figure out how to use the ruler then it goes together very easily. Thanks to Sharon's patience.

Thanks. I looked at it and saved it to do for my husband. It does look complicated but the instructions were simple. Just right for me.

That is pretty cool. My huband is a woodworker too!

Thanks.

i AM JUST GETTING READY To bind a quilt of this pattern. It is the second quilt I have EVER made, and I am so happy with it and it will now become a special gift for my sister and her husband on their 30th wedding anniversary next week. I did find this quite easy - even as a new beginner.

I checked that one out too...I really liked that quilt with the big flower applique at the top of the page. Now I want to stop packing for vacation and go look at my stash!

I thought making star quilts was hard until I watched some of the tutorials by Kaye Wood. Here is a link

I spent hours on this link when I first discovered it.
Enjoy

I like Warm Wishes for a good looking and easy quilt and looks really good and in my opinion, looks kind of like it was hard to do, but isn't. A bargello is really easier than it looks too.

Here is a link that has a nice PDF to down load. Earlier in this thread I found this site and this is one pattern of many in the left sidebar. It's very well done.

It is for a bigger size, so would need to be changed to smaller blocks, if you want to make the one you referred to.
