Susan, Thanks for the great idea!!!!I too like your style. My d-i-l will probably love that idea.hehehehe ........But, on the up side, I did get that great bundle of 360 - 6 in . squares of georgous Hawaiian prints she had NO IDEA what to do with.Good thing I did, huh? Thanks again for the great thought. I do have just a touch of a devil in me to actually decorate a drop cloth. :-)  :-)

Boo 05-04-2007 07:43 PM

360 6"squares of hawaiian prints?!?!?!?!?! Oh my, you are one lucky lady. You had better post of picture when you make something out of them! (excuse my drool)

SandraJennings 05-07-2007 03:24 PM

Dear signitwright.....Sounds like two "people " need a quilt.....the dog....and maybe a small lap quilt for the DIL.....She can have the lap quilt! i bet the dog would love a snippet quilt of all the scraps too small to make a square from....light fusible and some allover stitching.....VOILA' .....a snuggly for a much loved multi-legged family member...Why not? what were you just going to throw them away? LOL!

signitwright 05-07-2007 03:36 PM

Hi Sandra, I have every intention of making my grandpup a quilt, complete with pictures of her furry four-legged "aunt and uncle" who live here at my house. I will post pictures of the quilts I make for their home. My d-i-l truely had no idea she had said anything out of the ordinary. So, no real offense was taken. After all, she did give me those wonderful Hawaiian print squares that she could have thrown away. Shows she was thinking of me. Thanks for your input. Really good ideas. Happy Quilting Pam

No doubt you have a wonderful gift...in DIL, grandpup...and all....Some of the best gifts are those that softly remind us of the wonder we behold whether others see it or not. And you.....get one block after another of beauty to behold....you will have fun! :D

signitwright 05-07-2007 07:12 PM

Thank You Sandra. You are so nice. And yes I am blessed with a wonderful family . Two legged, four legged and even a slithering critter. (My son has a fondness for reptiles and decided since is grown and away from home ,I needed a ball python to remind me of when he lived at home and filled the house wiith snakes and lizards.) He gifted one to me.

SandraJennings 05-08-2007 08:13 AM

You are much braver than I. Although a friend had an iguana that would get all riled up every once in awhile and I would have to go down and talk in my FM voice to calm him...He was a piece of work.

I can identify with having people not appreciating the work involved in making a quilt. My son was marrying into a very rich family. I knew he would receive a lot of expensive gifts. He sails so I decided to make him a king sized quilt in the Mariner's Compass pattern. It was my first qult. I took a class and worked on it for 5 months. I designed it myself. I had it professionally quilted and she did a beautiful job encompassing star patterns into the actual quilting. I was shocked how beautiful it turned out. I did it in his favorite colors blues. To this day I have never seen the quilt out. Three years now. I do not know what happened to it. The overall cost was over $1000 but I migh as well have just written a check. Thanks for letting me vent. It really helps to know others have had the same experience.

sarah333 05-16-2007 10:24 AM

oh my goodness allthings, that would really hurt. applications ,would be the answer for us quilters

Catherine 05-16-2007 10:32 AM

Mothers are suppose to be nosey.....ask him where in the heck it is!! My first quilt I made for my son when he went off to college, I found out last year ( Cause I kept asking) he used it to lay on the ground under his truck as he changed the oil. Maybe it's best not to ask after all.....there are some things, we would rather not know :?

SandraJennings 05-16-2007 11:03 AM

Someone told me once that when it comes to giving someone a gift it is not ours to determine the manner of how the gift is utilized, for we may find we do not approve...but then if we do not approve...what was the intent of the gift giving? If it was not out of the pureness of the giving, then we look to receive our own from it. It was a hard thought, but it helped me to look at the love behind the gift towards the person gifted.
I, also, endeavor to more deeply appreciate what has been given to me,knowing that I too, may not have given due consideration. Not always with equal deliberation still, unfortunately. :? :)

vicki reno 05-17-2007 04:21 AM

Sandra, you have a point, but I would be crushed if that had happened to one of mine. My mother may not have appreciated it, but at least its still in a closet somewhere.

signitwright 05-17-2007 05:47 AM

I understand both views. While my d-i-l may not have a clue, my grandkids love and REALLY use the quilts I made for them. When I visit my 5 yr. old grandson Timmy always insists I use his made- with-love quilt I made him. He says it makes him well faster when he gets sick.It is a jeans quilt made with old jeans from myhusband and me. Timmy points out the pockets from his grandpa. They have faded spots on them from grandpa's comb and wallet. All his little friends want a grandpa quilt too.My other grandson, Amadeus, keeps his on his bed year round and only take t off if little kids come over who might spill something on HIS QUILT. His sister Alexis, takes hers on all of her sleep-overs at her friends houses. She even made her first quilt (a wall hanging/doll quilt) last summer when visiting me. It makes all the forgotten, mis-used and neglected quilts I have made not so important after all. :D

vicki reno 05-17-2007 06:00 AM

That is a wonderful story. I have 3 gk's but need to make the 2nd son one before I start on the little ones. They all got baby quilts when they were born, and now need quilts for their regular beds. So many quilts, so little time!

Joyce 05-17-2007 08:50 AM

I just read through all the letters on lack of appreciation for quilts. People can be so cruel even though some of them don't even realize what they have done.
When I was 10 I had taught myself to crochet.
I bought white linen (with my money from babysitting, yes, at 10 and for a newborn no less) cut it into an oval and 2 circles to fit my older sister's vanity. The kind that dropped down in the center with a stool to sit in front of the mirror.
I crocheted an edging around these and gave them to my sister as a gift.
My father had just died 3 months earlier and I had transferred my father feelings to my brother-in law, thought the sun rose and set in him.
The next time I was at there house I watched as he set his foot upon a stool and polished his shoes with the oval piece of the set.
My heart was broken and it still hurts to think of it.
Life went on and I became a professional seamstress. I would sew beautiful dresses for my mother even though I didn't have time to sew for myself. Her response was always; "Oh, Honey this is so nice BUT why didn't you..." If I had put in a pleat it should have been a dart, if it were a dart it should have been a pleat.
I finally learned that I could not buy my mother's love, so I quit trying. I had other people who not only appreciated my work but was willing to pay for it.
My kids shower me with praise for everything I make for them.
I have crocheted a ring pillow lined in silk for my GDs which I know will be appreciated.

Joyce, I am so glad you now have people and family in your life who appreciate and love the things you make and do for them. I also love to crochet and have made many things my kids and GKs enjoy. Now that I quilt they have other things to enjoy also. You keep on making your lovely crocheted goodies for your kids and GKs. They will always love and appreciate you and your talent. ( No strings attached) Happy crocheting to you. !!!!!!!!!Enjoy life and the ones who love you. :D  :D Pam

The good thing about your story lies in the final ending; one day YOUR quilt will come full circle and return home to you where it will be appreciated. :D

GiGi 07-13-2007 07:01 AM

This is my favorite comment; "She wants enought money for it....I could do that!" I want to say so badly, SO DO IT!!!! :D

I, too, have made nearly every woman in my family a quilt for different occasions--weddings, babies, Christmas, just because.

One day I overheard my MIL tell someone that people (me) only give homemade gifts when they can't afford to buy something decent. Nice, huh?

A long time later she asked me to make her a quilt. I told I didn't have the time. There was no point confronting her but I sure wasn't about to invest a single moment of my time and love into something for someone so unappreciative.

There's my rant. Next?

Celeste 07-15-2007 06:00 PM

Don't blame you dian57!

She sure had some nerve and I'm glad you were able to, in your way, stand up to her!

b1pegasus 07-23-2007 06:28 AM

I have not been quilting for very long. but I love it. and everyone or most everyone I make a quilt for love them I made five quilts for my step kids and they were afraid to even put it on their bed. I did get them to put on their bed.(teased beged and pleaded)They were afraid to hurt them. Even the quilts I made for graduation presents the girls won't leave them and take them everywhere they go. but my girl child leaves hers in her trunk and has told me she don't want another one she has enough blankets. she broke my heart. but I do have plenty of other people that beg me for even a simple quilt. It just go to show eveyone out there some people don't know how much love is put into a quilt.

dojo36 09-06-2007 06:28 AM

I've been reading all your posts on other people not appreciating a "quilt". I've only been quilting for a year now (wish I had started years ago). I just make the quilt top then have it machine stippled by a pro as I can't do that, I've tried and just made a mess. And I don't really know how to quilt by hand either. I've tried that too only to end up with another mess. But getting back to the topic at hand on other people not appreciating what we make whether it be a quilt or a pair of pajamas or some dish towels, I won't give anything I make to anybody that does not appreciate it but I have a sister that just oohs and aahs over anything i make for her so needless to say she gets several hand made things from me. And by the way, I entered my blue roses quilt in the local county fair, can't wait to see if i win a first place blue ribbon. The fair starts tomorrow and I'll be going Sunday evening and I'll find out then how it placed. I'll take a picture of it at the fair and post it on here. I think all you people are the greatest i've ever met on-line. Although I've sewn and crocheted for years, I nearly let time run out before I started making quilts, as I'm almost 71 now, and I am absolutely obsessed with the quilts now. I'm making lap quilts for all the women in my family for Christmas. I will just stitch in the ditch on all of them. I'm using flannel for batting, that makes them very cuddly and light weight (we all live in West Texas and don't need a heavy heavy quilt). I'm using 8" squares, one solid & one printed, then I'm machine embroidering something on the solid squares. they are turning out cute. I enjoy every one of yall but I must get something done now around the house besides sewing & making quilt tops & chatting. I bought a new sewing machine the other day, it's a Janome 6600, it does everything but perc ur coffee in the morning, lol.

kathy 09-06-2007 08:24 AM

Dojo, glad to hear you're enjoying your new obsession and us! Good luck on the fair.

vicki reno 09-06-2007 10:09 AM

I have crossed my fingers and threw salt over my shoulders so that you will have good luck at the fair. Or maybe I should say so that the judges will have good eyesight and be able to see a winner :!: :!: :!:

dojo36 09-06-2007 10:38 AM

thanks kathy & vicki

vicki reno 09-06-2007 10:41 AM

Dojo, I am excited for you! A friend of mine told me I should have kept the pansy quilt and entered it in the fair in Oct. But I gave it to me aunt instead. I don't feel like my work is good enough and I'd be too embarassed.

dojo36 09-06-2007 10:44 AM

oh i bet it is too, ur just too modest. hey has anybody heard of the 6 hour quilt and have a pattern or instructions for it? I've heard some of the other ladies talking about it but I don't know anything about it. Thanks, Donna

Steve 09-06-2007 11:02 AM

I’ve yet to experience the feeling with a quilt, but I did have something similar happen when I was sewing teddy bears. I gave one to a good friend once, and when I asked if he liked it the response was “The dog did.” It hurt the way he said it, and I’d never even consider doing a quilt for him.

Also, I don’t know about you all, but ‘after’ buying a nice piece (hand made object) at a yard sale, I always make it a point of asking where it came from. When I get the story of so and so made it for me, or my mom did it etc., I lay into them, usually saying “Don’t you know how much hard work and love went into this?” or “How could you let a family treasure go like this?” Usually, they just look at me like I’m a complete nut case. There loss, not mine!

Big quilter bear hug all round.

signitwright 09-06-2007 03:09 PM

Dojo, good luck with the fair quilt and WOW, what ambition to make all those lap quilts for everyone.I know they will be greatly appriciated. :-) :-) :-) Pam
