I love both. However, I hand quilt so it takes me a really long time to finish one. Therefore, I have a stack of unfinished tops waiting for me. I get bored with the quilting so I go make another top. I'll never catch up. Someone said they did't like the binding process. I don't mind it at all. I know when I get there I am almost finished.
I love both but the part I really hate is layering them. I do quilt on my regular sewing machine (Bernina 180) any size. Sometimes, like now, I am so overwhelmed with the number of quilts that are ready to be quilted that I just have to quilt a few of them.
I love to cut out the fabric and piece. I don't like the quilting part. That's why I have so many UFOs!
Nope same issue here. I wonder if I get a quilting machine it would be better. You do not want to know how many beautiful quilts and projects are laying around in my quilting studio stuck at the quilting part. Most are already basted.
Oh yeah, that's me. LOVE to start a new project - once the top is finished I lose interest....
I love it from start to finish....however, I get a little tired of piecing the blocks before I get finished with them....especially if it is a large quilt. But, I don't do many large quilts. I DON'T like doing the backings, but I am not a procrastinator....so I get with it. Now that I have my HQ quilting machine, I am even more into "gettiing it quilted".....makes a huge difference. I am probably an odd-ball here, but I LOVE to do the binding....especially sitting down with it and doing the handwork on the back side. But, then I love handwork.
My sister inlaw said it best. She said the piecing part is terrific because you are creating something, the colors are pretty, you get to see your quilt top coming together, etc.....This part is a joy to do.
Then it's time to put the quilt together and that is WORK plain and simple. |
Piecing. I dont actually quilt anything.
I aspire to be a finisher -- SOMEDAY!
I loved all aspects of making a quilt - except the actual quilting part. Had almost 50 quilt tops when I decided to get a MegaQuilter & Next Generation frame. Had that setup for 1 1/2 years before actually trying it, then found I had no talent for it. Bought QBOT, quilted small charity quilt and took off! All 50 of those quilt tops were done in less than 3 months! I never have a backlog now. A story with a happy ending!
I like to do the rest of the quilt. After the top is put together I enjoy finishing the quilt.
Have any of you checked out'Homemade Quilting Table' in the picture section yesterday? It's really a great idea and she shows several photos. I'm seriously thinking about having this done. I could put this together myself--I just need someone to cut the wood.
I love to piece. Especially "Cut it up, sew it together, and see what happrns". No pattern, just winging it. I just discovered paper piecing, and much to my surprise, I am fascinated and enjoying it. BUT, I find no creative satisfaction in finishing. BUT, I love doing the binding. Ah well, there is nothing wrong in being a little eccentric!
My sis stopped quilting because she doesn't like to quilt them. She loves to piece them. I love piecing and quilting. We need to get together. She can piece and I can quilt and we both would be happy. When I got my frame I couldn't believe the number of people at the hospital that wanted me to quilt their tops. I am afraid if I start quilting for money I won't enjoy it anymore. Sigh.
I prefer all aspects of the piecing process and then she rests. (Meaning I am hard pressed to finish) But then I've known for a long time that I am a "process person" not a "product person"
That's me. Putting them together and quilting is a chore. I have 2 that are sandwiched WIPs, but I always take time away from those to make new tops ... for me, THAT's where the fun is. So, I have a number of tops stored away awaiting the next steps. Unless I have some motivating reason, I'm very slow to complete quilts. Since it's only a hobby, it doesn't bother me, though.

I'm a piecer for sure. That's why I have bags and bags of UFO's that I'm working on finishing.
I don't do the quilting, I give the top to my best friend and she does them on her long arm. |
I have a feeling that this has always been so. Do you ever check out ebay and see all the vintage quilt tops for sale?Apparently a lot of people liked to piece but never got around to quilting them together.
I am so new to quilting I don't know which I will be finally. I suspect a piecer like my mom. She always loved the fabric shopping and putting together the blocks. I was often her sounding board and design assistant when she began to put the top together. Although I have sewn all my life, I am just learning to quilt. When my mom passed away she left behind at least a dozen projects in various stages of completion. I hope to at least get the tops together and then find someone to quilt them, my father wants to see them complete and then passed on to me and my siblings.

Yes indeed. No, I have not.

I used to be a piecer...or partial piecer...but now I'm more of a finisher.
The best thing I did for myself was back in 2001. My resolution for the year was to finish a quilt a month. That didn't mean from "start to finish"...because I did have a lot of stuff sitting around...I just had to FINISH a quilt every month. By March, I was getting tired of ditch quilting and the easy stuff that I could do with my walking foot. I finally got up the courage to learn to free motion quilt simply because I couldn't stand using my walking foot any longer. I had (still do) a stash much to big to stop quilting...it was either that or learn to free motion. Another payoff, I could finally put away my "how to bind a quilt" notes, because I did enough quilts in a row to finally lock it into my itty bitty brain. Anyway, that's my story. Maybe it'll work for you! Julie |
Love it all!
Okay, it is officially out there now. I have listed numerous sizes of quilt tops to be quilted at a Fourth of July special rate for the whole month of July. Please check them out in the classified section. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY everyone.
I love the process of making a quilt top, the pattern, fabric, placement, sewing, everything...but, then quilting. I like to FMQ but it seems to take some extra incentive to get me to finish it all up. I usually like to wait until I have someone to give it to before I do the quilting.
I very much prefer piecing to quilting. Maybe all the piecers could match up with quilters and work out a deal! :)
Looks like piecing is the favorite of most. I don't drag my feet as much anymore. I used to just tie my quilts, then started hand quilting. (still trying to perfect the stitches). My friend bought one of those small longarms, her goal is to get me to use it. I've started off small with a hopping foot on my machine. I now find fininshing a creative part of the quilt also, I combine hand quilting and machine quilting.
I like piecing and love to see the top finished, but the rest of it is just work. The thing I hate the most is putting the quilt sandwich together, that seems to be the main problem for me. No matter how hard I try, it seems I always have a wrinkle somewhere. I think that is why I have always sent my quilts out to be quilted. I really don't mind the binding.
I love to hand quilt. I'm starting to meander outside of the ditch these days....I think wholecloths are in my future!
I piece and am starting to get into more intermediate piecing because I want to make my quilting better. I love following the seams on the top to see it come to life in the backing. Someday I might have a medium size arm or something if I ever really get into machine quilting...but I love my handwork and find it so relaxing. It takes me approx 6 months to quilt a queen size working on it a little each day. I recently starting quilting a lady's smaller tops. I wish more people were patient like her and give me the time to finish. With the invention of the long arm, many people don't like the handwork anymore...takes too long. |
I love hand quilting; I'm just too slow. So I usually pay someone else to quilt my tops (machine or by hand) unless it's a baby quilt or throw.
Silly me . It seems i get more relaxation out of just cutting, cutting, cutting. then if i start to sew and don't like waht im seeing it may never get done.
Oh yes! I love to piece, too!

I enjoy piecing but I finish every quilt I start before starting something new.
I give my quilts away, so have to finish what I start, before I start another. I know that person that I'm giving it to is waiting, even if they don't know they are getting it. I love to see them done!!!
I piece the tops in the summer and hand quilt all winter.
I am totally a piecer :)
I have my favorite block ready to go - but it just sits on the back of the futon :) |
i enjoy both , when doing the piecing it is starting something new and i cant wait to see how it looks put together, then i enjoy the quilting because that means i am almost done !! and i can sit back and enjoy the finished quilt and then start on another
If I really, really like the quilt top I've made then I will finish quilting it, or if the quilt is being made for someone in particular. But if not, then I toss it into a tote in my closet with its backing in case I ever decide to like it again.
