Is is just me or does anyone else LOVE TO PIECE together blocks and tops but really not into putting them together into quilts/finished projects?
When I start a new project, I can work on it every day with enthusiasm! After the top is together, I run out of interest in getting them finished. I have about 4 right now - just waiting. Anyone else there? Anyone else been there and figured out how to get through it? HELP!!! |
I love to peice also. When I have so many I start to finish.
Me,me,me...I have several tops completed but don't really like to quilt on my sewing machine. I can rent time on the longarm at my LQS but stay so busy that I can never seem to get there.
I do the same thing. I must have at least 8 quilts that are all pieced but need to be quilted. I am looking for a frame to use with my sewing machine in hopes it would make it easier to quilt from the machine. It is sooooo spendy to send them out but a long arm is to spendy for me right now also. Oh to win the lottery!
I'm the same way. I'll get lots of stuff to that finishing point then start something else. If I sit it out so its in my way eventually I'll get it finished. Or if I have a dead line. Or dreadline. I just have to be in the right mode to do all the finishing stuff. ;)
I like to do mine from start to finish. If someone else finishes for me, I don't find any satisfaction from that. I don't always get it finished as fast as I want, but I do always finish them myself.
I like it all except the binding. I absolutely hate it.
I like them both. But I definitely piece more than I finish.
Yeah, piecing and putting the top together is fun. I have more tops than finsihed quilts at the moment. I know they will get done one day. I usually bring them to a LAQ who does a really great job on them.
I am slowly finding the Zen in finishing. Binding may be my biggest delay.
DUHHHHHHH Light bulb moment!
One reason I can't proceed with the next step is I don't have batting... How's that sound for a reason? Good enough? Well that's my reason and I'm sticking to it! |
I'm a finisher. I love to quilt and just make tops so I can finish them. My tops are all very basic easy patterns or I make them up, sometimes as I go.

I am a prolific piecer!
but I also love the quilting, but I will wait until I have several tops and then quilt for a few weeks until they are all done. I like sewing the binding the most! Just very satifying to have a completion. |
piecing for me! I love selecting fabrics and seeing the design come alive. Anything over a simple lap quilt and I take it to my local senior center where they have a longarm, or else to one of the guild members for finishing.
I'm pretty much a piecer because I quilt by hand. It takes me 4-6 months to quilt (nights & weekends and doing nothing else). I can't wait that long to start the next quilt so my tops have piled up. I can't quilt by hand any more so I will be learning how to machine quilt on my sewing machine. All those tops now have a chance of getting finished.
I like to do both but really enjoy the piecing more. As of now, I have 7 quilts waiting to be quilted. I only have the batting for two so I don't feel I'm that far behind.

Hey, I fit into this catagory, love to piece'm hate the layering part. Got about a dozen tops lying around.
I love piecers like you all.
Many piecers or toppers find their way to my door snd let me have the honor of quilting their quilts. They quilt "by check" and let me do the actual quilting. This gives them more time for more piecing, and earns me a living doing work that I love. WIN-WIN situation I say! |

I really enjoy the piecing and had quite a few of them accumulating, but I bought a longarm machine and now I love seeing them get a step further. The binding I go in spurts with. But I am going to be offering a special on all my longarm queen size quilting services tomorrow that are done with a pantograph for only $100. I will be posting that tomorrow so keep an eye out for it.
I'm also one of those finishers - for other people!! I figure that my lifetime will not be long enough to make all the quilts I want to make, so I live vicariously through you!
I have a longarm machine and do lots of quilting for people on this board. I am running a special right now. I have a punch card when full, you get 20.00 off next project, meandering, loop meandering, and certain edge to edge patterns. I also offer a quantit doscount if you send two or more quilts.
Check out this thread: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-51799-1.htm |
Kudos to the finishers! I heart you all! I'd rather piece and design and leave the quilting to the experts. I do quilt my smaller quilts but only because I can't afford to have them done professionally. ;) When I win the lottery I'm sending each and every one out! The finishers do such nice work!
I truly do like all aspects of quilting. Just in spurts. I love choosing the fabrics and patterns, cutting - eh, not my favorite but I do like seeing the stacks of pieces pile up. Then the peicing is so fun to see it all come together and the pattern emerge. The handquilting is fun as I sit with my husband and sons as they watch TV and I quilt. The hand work is my favorite by far.
I too love to piece but not quilt them, I have a friend that has a quilting machine and will do them for me. I don't mind putting the binding on and started a small type business putting bindings on for others charging 1.25 a linear foot and had a few customers that didn't like putting the bindings on. Finisehd 6 tops in a week since I couldn't go anywhere other than doctors with hubbie.

I have lots and lots of tops!!! help!
I'm with Kathy - I like to start the quilt and then finish it before I begin another one. I get great satisfaction taking a picture of it and adding to my quilt album.
I love the start to finish and I keep a good supply of batting in different sizes on hand. I finish one before starting another. I don't have enough storage space for UFOs. If someone else would finish them I couldn't say I made it. I get a lot of pleasure knowing I did it all myself.
I am the same way...and I wish I could say that I only had four tops to finish....I can't even count. LOL
ok, well you are making better progress than me for most then.
I have 2 quilts ready for the quilter. But the rest of mine are stil in the block stage not even the top stage. I have 2 sets of blocks here from exchanges on the board I need to get made into tops SOON and one that I started making blocks for WAY BACK but haven't got back to them, I want to get it done and made into a throw size for hubby's chair. I am right now finishing up the blocks for the boomerang exchange and when those are complete I will have 34 more to be put into tops these will probably eventually become donation quilts for a childrens safe house here and then there are those star blocks I'm collecting to make a quilt for my brother's DAV chapter to raffle....wow who has time to quilt? Plus I don't have a machine so I either have to send them all out and have them done (expensive) or tie them as my arthritis won't allow me to wrestle them on my machine. Does anyone else have this problem? Muriel |
I'd rather piece 'em than finish 'em. Besides, I don't have the money to send them out to be quilted.
Maybe someday... |

I don't like to piece - but I love to hand quilt! It was such a wunderful discovery for me when I saw pics of wholecloths and strippies - it's possbile to make a quilt without piecing! What an enjoyment!
I'm definitely a piecer/appliquer and not a finisher. I have three or four quilts in pillow cases in my closet now that just need bindings.
I love to piece the blocks. Dont mind the machine quilting
but sashing is a drag for me. |
I like the actual quilting the best of all. I only piece out of necessity. I am the Queen of Cheater's Cloth. I can make any preprinted panel look like it was carfully hand pieced or appliqued."not". I love collecting fabric and the Linus Project gives me lots of excuses to keep buying, especially kid oriented fabrics. Most of them I make are just a lively kid print with a flannel back and basic machine quilting with a decorative stitch and varigated thread. At this point I have made several hundred of them. I have at least 12 of them ready for this month's contribution. I am a handquilter for hire when someone is willing to pay. I always have a handquilting project in progress that is portable to take to Bee or on our cruises etc. I will piece when absolutely necessary and tear my hair out when I have to assemble someone else's work.
I have to be a topper also, I am sure it is frustrating for the one's waiting for their quilt................
