piecing thread color

It just struck me today... I always reach for white thread when piecing, no matter the color of my fabric. I just never even thought about it. I alter the color of my quilting thread, but not the piecing. What do you do? Do you match the thread to fabric for piecing?

Tartan 03-02-2016 10:24 AM

I do change my piecing thread to match the majority of my fabrics. If I am doing scrap quilt piecing I use beige or grey thread as it goes with most fabrics.

joe'smom 03-02-2016 10:47 AM

I just make sure I'm not using a very dark thread if I'm piecing something with lots of light background, and not using a very light thread if piecing something predominantly dark. Beige and grey work with just about everything.

Bree123 03-02-2016 11:31 AM

I have 3 colors of thread for piecing -- charcoal grey for darks, light beige for piecing lights & white if I'm working only with pure white (which is pretty rare). The one I use the most by far is the beige. That's what I use if I'm mixing lights & darks or colors and whites.

I do match my thread if I am doing turned edge applique.

tessagin 03-02-2016 11:44 AM

Ido pretty much the same a others on here.

NJ Quilter 03-02-2016 01:01 PM

I have lots of tbread colors so usually match to fabric. If I don't happen to have matching thread then I usually reach for either a light or dark grey as a neutral.

Onebyone 03-02-2016 01:41 PM

It doesn't matter to me what color the piecing thread is but I don't use black thread for white fabric or vice versa. My favorite color is bright red thread. It looks pretty on my machine!

soccertxi 03-02-2016 05:26 PM

I am a grey girl all the way. I do applique with either matching thread or light/dark as needed.

Koriana 03-02-2016 06:43 PM

I used to use white all the time...and still do with light fabrics...but I've found that it occasionally peaks through...especially when a quilt has been machine quilted (it is pulled so tight on the frame that sometimes the tread pulls enough that you can see it in the seams which is unappealing against darker fabrics)...now I mostly use a neutral like gray or beige though I will also color match to the primary color.

That is what I use too

Boston1954 03-02-2016 07:32 PM

I used to change if it was really dark fabric, but now I go with a deep cream, or soft grey and just leave it at that.

brandeesmom 03-02-2016 09:35 PM

I try to use all of my half full or less bobbins to piece with just so I can free up my bobbins. I jut put them on the thread spool pin.

todiesmom 03-03-2016 03:24 AM

I also like grey or beige but at times just use my bobbins that have appropriate thread colors for the top thread. This is a good way to use up odd pieces of bobbin thread and give you a clean bobbin. I was buying 10 bobbins at a time but now all I do is empty the bobbins by using them to piece all kinds of odds and ends. I do a lot of stitch in the ditch before I even do the quilting so that keeps my quilts from pulling apart. I work on a domestic machine this might not work for a long arm.

quilttiger 03-03-2016 03:51 AM

I use neutrals such as different shades of grays, beiges and creams for piecing. If it is not a problem with the project, it is fun to use up bobbins, both on top and bottom, too.

Bren 03-03-2016 04:06 AM

I also use grey, beige, or white depending on fabric colors.

quilterpurpledog 03-03-2016 04:18 AM

I use mostly beige, white or gray. I usually buy cones to use because they are economical to use. I like to piece with 50/3 thread. However, I do like to use the thread on bobbins just to free them up. I do not understand the concept of a bobbin with thread attached to the spool from which it came. I have about a dozen bobbins and that is quite sufficient. I also like to finish up a spool of thread that does not have enough thread for another project.

grammasharon 03-03-2016 05:26 AM

I agree with joe'smom, I use beige and grey with just about all my quilting except of course where the top is mostly white and then I do use the white thread. Seems to work out good.

eastslopequilter 03-03-2016 07:20 AM

When I have a little thread on a spool, I use that thread to get rid of it to piece.

Snooze2978 03-03-2016 07:27 AM

I inherited a bunch of thread from my mother who no longer sews so I'm going thru them using the lightest colors 1st for piecing. Right now I'm working thru 8 spools of a medium grey thread. If I'm working on a quilt that is all light fabrics I will change over to a white, cream or beige thread just for safety sake. Otherwise I haven't notice the threads showing thru onto the front side.

CanoePam 03-03-2016 08:30 AM

Light beige 90% of the time. Medium gray for really dark fabrics. I have a cone of SoFine thread of each.

JENNR8R 03-03-2016 08:51 AM

I always use Presencia 60 weight thread in color No. 216 to piece with. It's described as a medium beige/gray. I am starting a quilt with a white background and wondered if I should use white. The problem is all of the other colors in the quilt. I think I'll stick with No. 216.

ManiacQuilter2 03-03-2016 09:37 AM

I have been real happy with using Aurifill color "dove". It is a very light gray.

klswift 03-03-2016 09:44 AM

the only time I am specific is with white fabric or black fabric. Other than that I usually just use a neutral - taupe, grey, cream or a 'denimy' blue. These tend to blend in with most fabrics.

MargeD 03-03-2016 10:15 AM

Unless it is a quilt with mostly black fabrics, I use grey, lite/dark, beige and white. I find grey is a great neutral thread to use for most fabric piecing.

Onebyone 03-03-2016 11:29 AM

I have noticed the odd or bright color threads are on sale more and for less then the neutral color threads. I got a case of bright red aurifil thread for $2 a cone. The neutral color was $6 a spool at the same sale.

RedGarnet222 03-03-2016 12:53 PM

I use the most neutral to the fabric thread I can. Grey's and beige are a good match to most fabric color ways. But, I have matched up the fabric with thread to the main background color too. Like blue on blue fabric.

donnalbaldwin 03-03-2016 02:02 PM

I use aurifil beige ..... But also I will use up a spool or bobbin of left over thread

jamsbuying 03-03-2016 04:08 PM

Beige or grey my go to color threads.

Polliwog 03-03-2016 06:15 PM

I like Aurifill in cream, light gray, or beige. It is very strong but thin enough that my piecing is more accurate.

scrappy happy 03-04-2016 06:20 PM

when im making a scrappy quilt I use all my bobbin threads up so I can empty my bobbins , because somewhere I will need an empty bobbin for when I will need to match the cloth. and this is a good place to use up small amounts of thread left on a spool

QuiltnLady1 03-04-2016 07:30 PM

I use the bright colors for quilting and piece using beige (or cream), white (only with whites) or gray (with darker colors).

Linda1 03-04-2016 07:48 PM

Right now I am using a light green on top and cream in the bobbin. I don't worry about the color because I use a fairly small stitch to piece.

ShirlR 03-05-2016 03:00 AM

I have been using Aurifil 50 wt 2600, a very light grey.

Marni 03-05-2016 03:54 AM

I use off white for lighter colours, and a steel grey for dark fabrics

briskgo 03-05-2016 07:41 AM

for dark fabrics I use up left over bobbins, top and bottom, for lighter white or off white.
