pincushion planter?

Has anyone made a pincushion out of a vintage novelty planter? The ceramic kind that have an animal that you can put a houseplant in. I hope you know the kind I mean.

I saw some at a quilt show made into pincushions & I thought it was a great idea! I have an old one that belonged to my grandma. It's been years since it had a plant in it. Since she taught me my sewing skills, it would be neat to have it in my sewing room. I did a search here on QB for pincushions and found 40 pages!

I haven't made even a simple pincushion before, so to put one in a planter might be kind of tricky. I suppose I could make a sample first.

Take a circle of fabric (depends on the size of your planter) put a wad of batting in it. Gather the fabric around the batting to form a ball. Sew a few stitches to secure. Stuff it into the container to check for size. Might have to add or remove batting for a good fit. When it looks good, remove it and apply hot glue about a half inch below the edge of the pot on the inside, all the way around. stuff the ball back into the container. I have had better luck with a bit sturdier fabric. I really like cotton velveteen. I also like using wool batting.

Yes, I have done that as well as other things. A lot of fun and they look great.

Thanks for asking the question and for the great tutorial. i have a really cute kitten planter I'm now going to make into a pin cushion. Plus I'm going to start looking for these planters at yard sales and thrift stores to make more.

What a great idea! I'm sure a lot of us have these little planters hanging around and don't want to toss them, but don't know what to do with them either.

Never thought about something like this. I'm sure going to make some of these as gifts for my quilting friends!
