Has anyone heard of a pattern called PINEAPPLES. I saw it demonstrated today and was very impressed. Is it as easy as it looked?

Moonpi 10-10-2009 05:44 PM

How was it done?

tlrnhi 10-10-2009 05:46 PM

Is this what you are talking about?

Gilla 10-10-2009 06:06 PM

No, the one I saw had no piecing. It was all done in squares. I just ordered the book from Amazon and want to try the sample I saw. It was georgeous.

Here is the one Patrice posted some time ago

This is it, except instead of cutting the triangles, the demo I saw faced the squares, sewed all around the square, cut the triangles after the sewing and turned it inside out. It had the same effect.

Thank you for your information. I saved it and I'll try it.

oksewglad 10-10-2009 08:10 PM

Gilla
I saw this demonstrated yesterday too. Have shied away from pineapple block because of waste, but this was a great way to do it. Going to try it soon.

Gilla 10-11-2009 06:10 AM

Did you attend the San Antonio Quilt Guild yesterday?

wvdek 10-11-2009 09:40 AM

The pattern June gave link to I know as 'square within a square' and the one tirnhi gave is known as athe Pineapple block. I have made several of the latter and they are really fun. Using your printer reduce/enlarge mode, you can make the squares any size you want.

Hope we have helped and not hindered.

Gilla 10-11-2009 10:29 AM

I just sat down and did a couple of them. They turned out nice. I started with a 3" square and am now at a 5" square in a different color.
I always hated using triangles as I could never match them right. This is ieasy, BUT, I wouldn't want to do a whole quilt like that.

Here is a pineapple quilt a friend of mine made and I quilted for her a couple of years ago, but it was paper pieced, no blocks. I have the pattern for it around here somewhere.

Gilla 10-11-2009 12:53 PM

Did you send the URL? I did not see what you tried to show me.

Can you see it now ? if not hit your refreash button.

Gilla 10-11-2009 04:18 PM

Yes, but this is not the same thing as I am talking about. The one I am referring to is made up of squares and triangles and don't look like Pineapples. I don't know why they call it that.

I didn't think so but I though you might enjoy the quilt, didn't to take your thread off track :D

thimblebug6000 10-11-2009 05:33 PM

your pineapples are beautiful ozark, thanks for sharing them too! That's what is so great about this forum....such a wonderful variety of patterns to share!

zennia 10-11-2009 05:36 PM

I just found a pattern for a Pineapple quilt by Darlene Zimmerman and fell in love with it. It is done in reds and whites and would be beautiful for Christmas. I was wondering if there are any hints or tricks anyone can share with us.

Mousie 10-11-2009 05:44 PM

ozarkgal, that is a pretty quilt!

Gilla, I have seen what you are talking about...either in a tute here, on board, or on tv. Hmmm, fill my head with so much quilty stuff, if I didn't copy, paste, bookmark, etc. I'd lose my head! It's a really great technique isn't it?
It surely is on my bucket list...just can't see the bottom of the bucket anymore

Gilla 10-11-2009 06:38 PM

Thanks for sharing. I loved the one you showed. It looks much harder than what I had in mind.

Gilla 10-11-2009 06:41 PM

Thanks ladies. I'm glad you enjoyed the picture, just to be on the up & up, that quilt was made by my friend 'Mary' in California. I only did the quilting.

Suwannee Terry 10-12-2009 03:23 PM

Ozarkgal, your quilting is super. Gilla, as for this forum leading you to buy more fabric...........I love this forum and am already in trouble buying way too much. This forum can't make my bad habit any worse

Gilla 10-12-2009 04:07 PM

I ordered some fabrics from fabric.com Saturday and I received notice today that it is already shipped. Now where am I going to put it? My dining room table is so loaded with scraps, I can't move. We have to eat on easy chairs in the living room. I don't want to buy any more fabrics for a while, but I don't have enough material to finish the one I bought a few days ago. Am I an addict?

Suwannee Terry 10-13-2009 06:36 AM

You're a bona fide quilter -- you've got the same disease that most of us suffer from

marta 10-13-2009 07:53 AM

There is a Log Cabin Pattern titled "Pineapples." I haven't made it, but it is just sewing strips as for the log cabin.

Gilla 10-13-2009 08:01 AM

Who makes it?

I am drooling. That quilt is fabulous and I love log cabin patterns. Do you have any idea how many patterns are waiting in line?

BellaBoo 10-13-2009 11:33 AM

All the traditional Pineapple log cabin blocks are paper pieced. I looked on littlefoot website and their pineapple patterns are paper pieced. DoJo is the pattern you used the off set Pineapple pattern? It was the only one for $10.

Debra Mc 10-13-2009 11:40 AM

That is a beautiful quilt. It would be neat to do on tote bag or shirt too. The pineapple block I know about has lots of pieces & looks like strips.

I think this maybe what you are looking for. I've made a couple of these - I saw them at a quilt show in Pomona, Calif last spring and it was gorgeous, but their pattern was paper pieced which I haven't attempted that yet. There is a specially marked ruler for this (mine is by Nancy Smith & Lynda Milligan) called the Pineapple Rule. They are time consuming at first but I would think that once you got the hang of it they would go together much faster. I've only done two but I'm planning on doing a couple more for a table runner.

no mine was not the off set, it was just the plain pineapple. i bought it a couple years ago so maybe they went up in price since then. they are all done in strips except the middle square. i love paper piecing when it's all mapped out for ya, i couldn't do it otherwise.

Yes, this is what I was looking for. But it was done differently, not paper piecing. She sewed squares together, cut slits in the facing, put another square, and turned it, going on and on to make it about 12" per square. It seemed so simple. I ordered the book and should have it tomorrow.
Your quilt is gorgeous, especially the color combination. Thank you for sharing.
