I've noticed a lot of quilts displayed here that don't get to show the "full picture" for the rest of us to see. I use the yellow headed pins to pin my quilt up on the wall. They're strong. Most walls are drywall. You can push the pins into the drywall enough to hold up the quilt. I use a leather thimble on the finger I push the pins in with. The pins leave such a small hole in the wall that you don't see them at all after you remove them. They also don't leave a hole in your quilt. Push the pins in at an angle so the head is up above the insertion point. This creates a grip that keeps the fabric from following gravity which is what it will do if the head of the pin is lower than its insertion point in the fabric. Outside, I use clamps to hold the quilt on the rain gutters of the house. I'm able to hold up to a 90" quilt without it touching the ground. Hope this is helpful to you.

I like the idea of using the gutters for hanging quilts. Thanks.

I only make lap or baby quilts right now and I hang them from my vertical blinds with binder clips.

Never thought of the gutters, thats a great idea. just gotta get the right hooks to clasp the quilt with. I will have to have a go at that the next nice sunny day we have, oohh the w/end is looking really good for that. :)

deema 09-20-2010 05:04 PM

I lay it on the floor, then stand on a chair to get the whole thing in! I like your way better. lol

I got the "new" (to me) plastic clamps that work trigger fashion from the Home Depot. I am always finding new uses for them.

tjradj 09-20-2010 05:06 PM

I lay my quilt top over my quilting frame so that the bottom is just off the floor. I may not get it all in the photo, but enough to show the design. A bonus - the digital photo often will show things my eye doesn't see - like a block turned the wrong way!

pennyj123 09-20-2010 05:07 PM

Hmmm Home Depot, never heard of that here, but will have a look around for the plastic clamps, are they like stronger pegs. :)

QUILT4JOY 09-20-2010 05:08 PM

I started out in quilting making King size quilts. I only recently started making the smaller Queen size. Whenever I work smaller than that I laugh with joy for the easeiness of it.

Hardware
stores, Loew's(like Home Depot) these are lumberyards with all kinds of other stuff. I see that you're from Australia. What's your equivalent to A lumber-hardware store with lots of other stuff.

pennyj123 09-20-2010 05:10 PM

LOL, that's called the special touch and only the maker would really notice that it was a mistake, anyone else would say it was unique. :)

Actually I'm trying to think how to verbally describe them. Is it the monkey wrench? Pipe wrench? In the older metal versions It was a long shaft with a head with teeth on it. There was a second piece with teeth that you moved up and down the shaft so you could clamp it around a pipe. They are probably also called C clamps. The new Plastic versions have a trigger instead of a screw area to move the two clamp pieces together.

I have a drapery rod hanging in the spare bedroom, with curtain rings and clips to hang the quilts from.

sunflower126 09-20-2010 07:28 PM

I use skirt hangers and hang them across my folding cupboard doors in the bedroom.

sew many ideas, is gr8. but i do like the idea of a sunny day and hanging them from the gutters. Maybe the neighbors might comment. heheheh LOl

ckcowl 09-21-2010 03:37 AM

i pin them to the drapes over the sliding glass door, that usually works. we do not have rain gutters, but my mom does, and i would be afraid of pulling them away from her house. i have been trying to figure out a way to fasten a quilt to the garage door for pictures, but so far have not figured out the perfect tool for the job. my next finished quilt i think i'm going to really splurge and take it to a photographer :)

 Phew!! thanx BJ - Whatever they're called I sure like how easy and versatile they are for so many things.

I was worried about the weight on the gutters before I tried it. But then saw that they actually had a wedge shaped piece behind them that kept them from falling down. I've also used T-pins to hold quilts up on the outside wood areas of wherever I am when I take the pix. They are thick though so may not be appropriate for every quilt. The C-clamps I talked about are sooo versatile that it's just a matter of finding places where they'll work

If you don't mind a strip of stick-on velcro on your garage door, you can pin the sew-on to the top of the quilt and it will hang really nice!

MadQuilter 09-24-2010 12:30 PM

Fortunately we have a banister on the second floor. DH is usually my quilt hanger.

My DH is usually my quilt holder too, see attached photo with his feet showing, LOL!

Used to pin quilts to a wall papered wall in my dining room and found hundreds of pin holes in the wallboard when we removed the wall paper. Now the walls are painted and I can't pin quilts into them without the pinholes being very noticable. You can see the wall I used to use, it's the one with the picture hanging on it. May in Jersey

Most quilts I photograph while they are hanging from the clothesline outside...have to be careful to do it when they are in the shade, and you can see the clothes pins. Sometimes, I have to rotate the pictures because of how I had to hang the quilt.
