No.

joyce j 08-24-2011 04:03 AM

I have but try to take out before I get to them causes to many problems

meanmom 08-24-2011 04:05 AM

i sew over them all the time. It is almost always fine. As long as you aren't pulling or pushing the fabric just let the machine do it everything is fine.

angelwingz 08-24-2011 04:08 AM

From a Machine Tech's point of view... Never sew over pins. First of all if you do hit a pin, your needle is damaged and you need to replace it. The worst thing that could also happen is you can send your machine out of time (or alignment)... Think of hitting a pothole hard with your car. It is better to pull the pins before you get to them, than to risk damaging your machine.

Dianne1 08-24-2011 04:18 AM

Heard that they will distort on one of the quilting shows, so have been trying not to and removing them just before the needle enters the fabric.

onthelake 08-24-2011 04:26 AM

:) Not on purpose!

psquared52 08-24-2011 04:33 AM

I don't pin much when I sew. When I do, I am very careful to remove them. I've sewn over a few pins and it is not a fun experience

angelarose 08-24-2011 04:45 AM

Never. I take them out as I go along. I'm thinking a broken needle in the machine can cause BIG problems...possible repair cost.

Chay 08-24-2011 04:54 AM

Yes. For 30 years I've been sewing over my pins - I just go very slowly and if it looks like I'm going to have a needle/pin collison I pull the pin out. When I started quilting I learned that it was forbidden so I guess I'll go to Quilt Prison if I'm apprehended. Have almost never broken a needle.

Deborah12687 08-24-2011 04:58 AM

I no longer sew over pins and pull them out as I go. I recked to many sewing machines by doing that. Been sewing on my old Singer machine for a while and hand sewing things. My old singer I have to keep setting the thread tention and can't figure out why it does that. I have been saving up once again for a new machine and only need $125.00 more and I can go shopping for a new one.

Sometimes, but I use very thin, sharp "quilting" pins. They are much smaller in diameter than ordinary straight pins.

Abby'smom 08-24-2011 06:24 AM

no, not any more -- Singer machine doesn't like them as they are the thicker ones

vivoaks 08-24-2011 06:44 AM

I've done it in the past, but just when I think I'm going good, I'll hit one and break the sewing machine needle. It's smarter to just pull them out as you get close to the needle.

ksea 08-24-2011 06:48 AM

I do and I know I'm not supposed to!!!

zennia 08-24-2011 06:48 AM

I try to remove them. I also try to pin over enough that the machine wont touch them.

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 08-24-2011 06:49 AM

I used to but since I have my electronic machine I'm afraid to.

karenpatrick 08-24-2011 06:51 AM

Unless I'm matching seams I pin outside the seam line, paralell to it, and I don't have to pull them out. When I'm matching seams, I sew right up to the pin and then pull it out.

lheartsl 08-24-2011 07:01 AM

I always did, however when I was taking a class, the viking lady said no.. it throws your machine out of wack....
who knew..
so now I am trying not to...

cjaye44 08-24-2011 07:27 AM

I try not to but occasionally I forget and sew over one. My vintage sewing machines seem to be much more forgiving than than my computerized ones.

Lavada 08-24-2011 07:39 AM

NEVER EXCEPT BY ACCIDENT AS MY HOME-EC TEACHER SAID THAT WAS A NO-NO MANY YEARS AGO

quilter1430 08-24-2011 07:48 AM

Never, ever! It can ruin your machine!

quiltymom 08-24-2011 07:57 AM

I used to til I hit one and my machine jumped timing on my singer and my serger VERY VERY costly to have fixed!!!!!!

Drew 08-24-2011 07:59 AM

I take them out, but sometimes (not being careful) have broken my needle and bent the pin. Not worth the hassle. Rather spend a half second to remove them.

yayaquilts 08-24-2011 08:02 AM

I used to sew over pins when making garments-years ago. Now I never sew over pins, because if you hit the pins they bend or the needle breaks.

Surfergirl 08-24-2011 08:28 AM

I never sew over pins.

Kristin in ME 08-24-2011 09:00 AM

Yup, I do. I use silk pins. I doubt more than 3 pins have ever gotten bent, and I've never broken a needle.

Essiescott 08-24-2011 09:17 AM

When I was taught to sew, we sewed over the needles, now some 45+ years later, I still sew over needles, I could probably count on one hand how many times my needle has broken because of this---maybe a couple. No biggie. Now I've sewn on machines from Singer 401, 221, 301, 27, and 15, my Brother 4000D, all act the same. I use regular quilting pins, not skinny ones, some with big yellow balls on top of 'em. No biggie with pins.

jbj137 08-24-2011 09:26 AM

Yes, I do.
But do it slowly.
I have older machines.

CAS49OR 08-24-2011 09:27 AM

No, especially with a computerized machine, it really does not like hitting a pin. It tells me it is going to stop for my own safety.

mostly not, but when I use pins to hold interlocking seams together (4-patch, etc.) I use them. And just go slow over them.

grannypat7925 08-24-2011 09:56 AM

Only occasionally by accident.

Marilynsue 08-24-2011 10:53 AM

Not intentionally1

Rose Bagwell 08-24-2011 11:10 AM

NO

I also take mine out as I go - I am not a real fast sewer but sometimes I do forget and sew over them. Sometimes it works and sometimes broken needles and bent pins.

gramquilter2 08-24-2011 12:16 PM

I pin a ways in from my 1/4" seam and don't take the pins out until I am finished, don't really sew over them but by them.

Latrinka 08-24-2011 12:18 PM

No, I take em out as I near them.

luvTooQuilt 08-24-2011 12:22 PM

I take them out.. my machine is worth more than the itty bitty split second it would take me to remove the needle that could cause enormous damage to it - why pay a repair man when i could very well use THAT money to buy more fabric..

Jeri 08-24-2011 12:43 PM

It really isn't wise to sew over pins as it eventually wears out the feed dogs on your machine.

MargeD 08-24-2011 12:54 PM

I do my best to never sew overf pins, as I could damage the needle, and I hate having to put in a new needle because then I'd have to rethread the machine - not fun. I try to pin far enough back so that I don't have to take the pins out, but if not, I take them out before I get to them.

ShabbyTabby 08-24-2011 12:54 PM

I have a Viking computerized and when I got it the dealer told me NEVER to sew over pins with my machine. So I never do. I usually put the pins in horizontally just so the presser foot misses them. If I'm matching seams, I put them in vertically and sew right up to them and then remove before going over them.
