never. Broke too many neeedles over the years doing so....

I sew over them when matching seams - use the flat-headed ones.

Farm Quilter 08-24-2011 02:31 PM

I do, but since I always use a quarter-inch foot, I have learned to pin with the sharp ends of the pins towards the edge of the fabric and they usually don't extend far enough to get hit by the needle.

auntdeb 08-24-2011 02:35 PM

I don't like to. It can ruin needles and pins. Sometimes, though, if trying to fit something together that is a little long on one side or a curve etc. I do - very slowly.

Not with my computerized machine!!! Although a broken needle or pin can be aggravating, if the machine's timing is knocked out, then it could mean a hefty repair bill and time in the shop.

nancy59 08-24-2011 03:27 PM

I take the pins out, it's easier than replacing needles and any other type of damage.

nannyrick 08-24-2011 03:33 PM

I try not to. I take them out as I go.

sheria 08-24-2011 03:42 PM

I always take them out

Lisa Marie 08-24-2011 03:56 PM

Yes, sometimes but slowly...

momto5 08-24-2011 04:22 PM

On my DSMs, most of the time. On my LA, ALL the time!

katesnanna 08-24-2011 04:39 PM

My original sewing machine (Lamair Helvitia)bought for my 21st birthday by my mum, sewed over pins like they weren't there. I had that machine for over 30 years.
My original Janome bought in 2001 also sews over pins. But my 6600 doesn't like to at all so I remove them except at seams where I walk the needle across one stitch at a time.

borntoquilt 08-24-2011 04:56 PM

If you pin from left to right ( fabric side toward your raw edge) you can safetly sew over pins, but not at mach 90 speed.. I rarely use pins anyway except for really LONG seams where there is a LOT of matching of points and other seams.....

Not on purpose.

Linda1 08-24-2011 06:40 PM

I walk over them in seams or take them out. You can really harm your machine if you hit one, I have actually knocked my machine out of time by hitting a pin.

No, no, no. They can snap your needle. They point will go flying and might land anywhere... even in your eye!

I pull them out as I get to them. I used to sew over them until I broke the needle on one and it cost me $88 to get my machine repaired (wrecked timing). Could have been more. I've been taking them out ever since unless I absolutely can't.

writerwomen 08-24-2011 09:19 PM

usually no because I don't have them perfectly straight and the risk of snapping a needle or oin is greater. Recently broke a needle while sewing rather fast. I felt the tip if the needle strike the outer corner of my eye before flinging off again. Had the broken tip not stil been threaded the outcome may have been worse

Stitchit123 08-24-2011 09:51 PM

NEVER

MelodyWB 08-24-2011 09:53 PM

I very seldom use them..I think they distort..but I wouldn't sew over them..even if it says u can !!

justlooking 08-25-2011 02:42 AM

Sometimes I do, but I don't like too.

Gramof6 08-25-2011 03:19 AM

I never sew over pins. Can damage the machine. Not worth a repair bill.

Sharonsews 08-25-2011 07:46 AM

I try not to but it seems there is always one hiding. :(

I do as well but I am very careful when I do it.
