Has anyone ever stored their blocks in a new pizza box? I went to the local Pizza Hut today and got 3 large boxes for $0.50 each.

marge 03-17-2007 07:11 PM

Yes I have, and they are wonderful and keep everything together. Love them.

I like boxes boots and sports shoes come in. These are good size and are good for project in progress, I put all the cut pieces, pattern, extra fabric and other things in the box. I put stickers on the end with a project name. These stack up real easy. I have 8 grands and I always have a good supply. :D

Have you ever used the waxed chicken boxes that come from grocery stores? They are big, but they store cloth so nicely and can be labeled and stacked too.

I also have used waxed fish boxes which are about half the size of the chicken boxes. You might think those would smell, but they do not if you air them in the sun for a day or two.

You pretty well have to have a friend who is in the restaruant business or grocery business to get them because they are such nice sturdy boxes.

I cover both kinds with pretty contact paper to make them seem more like craft holders rather than just cardboard boxes. I am not ashamed to open my closets to let them show.

I love the idea on the pizza boxes. I always have about 5 quilts going at one time. this is a great way to keep them together and not all over my sewing table. thanks, carolyn

HI! I'm new to this site. Looking forward to meeting new people. I have never thought about using pizza boxes, but, it sounds like a great idea. Thanks

I prefer the clear plastic boxes with lids. They stack well and come in different sizes, so when I just have the fabric for a project it goes in a med. then when I got it all cut out it goes in a small, then after it starts going together it gets to move to a large.
I use the chicken boxes in my attic for longterm storage.

marty bryant 03-22-2007 08:07 AM

Be careful when using pizza boxes .... a friend took her box, with several completed applique blocks in the pizza box, with her on a trip and room service at the hotel threw out the pizza box when cleaning up the room. You'd thought they would have checked to see what they got on the pizza and if there was any left before throwing out a spic N span clean pizza box .....

once again ...

chicken box?

huh?

what's that? a box that's scared of all the others?

kathy 03-22-2007 09:13 AM

yes patrice it's a coward.
when the grocery store recieves whole chickens they are in a heavy waxed box that is about 10 inches deep and 16"X18" with a lid
it's heavy cardboard with wax
i use the new ones cause that's what we use at work but we don't put chickens in them

NO! That's so NOT right! When we get hotel rooms, we don't get maid service. We don't like ppl messing around with our stuff. If I'm/we are still there, like fixing something to eat or watching tv or just messing around, we've let them come in and give us new towels and take the trash. We usually bag up the trash and just get new bags and take the old towels out to the maids and get more. Yeah, yeah, I know...I must be crazy or weird or both, but my stuff is MINE, and I don't like it bothered. :D I about had a cow when the maid/janitor/housekeeping woman came in the hospital room when I had my last baby. SHe moved MY TOOTHBRUSH! and other things that had been on the sink. THen, she sprayed some foam cleaner, like scrubbing bubbles or something, around where my TOOTHBRUSH was at! And...I don't like to spray stuff like that in the room where my kids are...and I HAD A NEWBORN BABY LIKE 4 FEET FROM HER! She took my soap/shampoo out of the shower and wouldn't shut up! She had the nerve to touch the blanket the baby was wrapped up in with her germy gloves! Finally I told her to turn out the light on her way out because I wanted to take a nap. She just stood there for a minute looking at me...
After all that, I never even turned her in. I changed the blanket and went on. (and scrubbed and rinsed my toothbrush)...I just didn't have the energy left....

I love pizza boxes for storage for lots of needlework projects. You can buy small ones for embroidery projects you are working on. DNF

mojo11 03-22-2007 02:07 PM

I have used new pizza boxes for a while now. I keep my applique blocks in them. Keeps the blocks clean and orderly. I get mine for free; I just ask for one at a time. Happy quilting

FroggyinTexas 03-22-2007 02:38 PM

Hey mojo 11! I taught at Permian High School in Odessa. Our spirit word was MOJO and the 300 + member marching band spelled the word on the football field at every home game. I know you've got your mojo working. DNF

mojo11 03-22-2007 06:41 PM

Hi DorothyNell-
I'm fairly new to the message board so it is great to get a reply. Mojo is an adult nickname and it helps me keep my "mojo working". Wow - that song is really old now. I've not been to Odessa, but I have been to Midland and fell in love with HEB's. Wow -- what a store! I worked on applique for 2 weeks while there.

FroggyinTexas 03-22-2007 07:11 PM

Odessa has an HEB store also, although the Midland store was built several years before the Odessa store.

What were you doing in Midland? I taught at Lee High School there for several years--it was Permian's chief football rival and it could really get ugly when the games were played in Midland!

That's one of the minor reasons I'm not a football fan.

Several of my quilting buddies do exquisite applique, but I am too impatient to do take the time required to do it. But I do admire it.

How long have you been on the forum? Do you belong to a guild? I belong to two and a sewing group that's mostly made up of women who own embroidery machines. I don't have one and don't want one...it seems to me that it requires far too much work to keep the machine in order, although the designs they do are very nice when the machine works.

If you can, post a picture of some of your applique work. I'm going to have to figure out how to post pictures.

froggy, in Texas

I, so far, don't have to worry about this happening, I don't get to travel with quilting stuff.

vicki reno 03-23-2007 06:37 AM

Mojo withas many UFO'S as I have, I'd have to hunt new pizza joint all the time, cause they'd remember this wierd lady that just wants boxes and that would be embarassing! Empty box! Whats wrong with our pizza

mojo11 03-23-2007 08:58 AM

Hey- I get my pizza boxes from Pizza Hut - hope they don't read this!!!!!!!
My husband and I eat all the pizza we order so I just ask for a large box to go. Works -- so far. I have several applique UFO's . I more I do, the better they look, but I am by no means a pro at it. I am in awe at some of the quilts I have seen at shows and in magazines. WOW.
My husband is in the oil field and the co he works for bought a yard in Midland so they sent him to check it out and make sure all was well and I got to go with him. I was in a motel for 2 weeks - hence - I got a lot of sewing done. I brought a lot of food home with me that I can't find here in small town Arkansas. I haven't been able to talk him into driving back to buy more food; however, we have gone that far to quilts shows.
Have a great day to all.

mojo11 03-23-2007 09:04 AM

Hi - I've just been on a short time. I'm still not real sure how this works. I think I answered on Vicki with info for you. Forgive me. I do have a stack of pizza boxes with UFO's in them. I don't belong to any guilds as I don't know of any close to me. I really do live in small town, USA. I also do pieced quilts, but the grandkids and daughter keep taking them as fast as I make them, which is not fast at all because I hand quilt. I may have to find someone to machine quilts some of my tops.

anita211 03-23-2007 10:25 AM

Hi all,

I also use the cardboard that comes under a 24 pack of water. These are usually a bit higher than pizza boxes and they don't have a lid, but work wonderfully well to stack, etc., when working on a quilt. Also, there is enough room for lots of fabric, plus a space for blocks. If you're using a pattern, it can lie on top and sort of help to keep the fabric clean.

I use boxes from a company called Schwan's, it is a home delivery service. The boxes are sturdy, and depending on what I order, they are different sizes, some are really great for pre-cut strips. Also great for wrapping gifts in, as I never wrap anything in its original box, always put it in something else.

Debbie Murry 03-24-2007 12:06 PM

Off the subject alittle but I save all plastic lids for use as templates. Butter bowl lids, coffee lids, sour cream lids and list goes on. I use these instead of paper piecing also. After I've joined my pieces I just pop it out.

susan s. 03-24-2007 12:09 PM

I like the pizza box Idea that would be great for stacks of finished squares. They would stay flat and not wrinkle. I also like shoe boxes and the other storage item I collect are those heavy plastic bags you get with things like curtains/ shower curtains/blankets/some bath and cosmetic products. Because they are mostly clear plastic and some even have Zippers. and are lots of sizes. Gift boxes like for shirts go on sale after the holidays for cheap and come in diff sizes!

Knot Sew 03-25-2007 05:14 AM

I still like my sport shoe boxes, I put a large rubber band around them and they don't empty if knocked around........for thread needles and small stuff I use the plastic school boxes.with a sticker with contents. :D

triciasquilts 03-25-2007 06:39 AM

I have one to top all the pizza boxes-a few weeks ago, Joanns was throwing away all of their display racks and plastic bins. My fellow vendors and I went dumpster diving and found some great stuff. The plastic bins that they hung on the wall for their smaller items were all stacked in the dumpster, so I grabbed a bunch not knowing what I would do with them.
Well, they are perfect for my blocks that I'm working on and all of my smaller pieces of fabric(like fat quarters). They all stack very nicely on my shelves.

What a find. I also grabbed other items from the dumpster, but haven't figured out what to do with all of them yet!!!!!

Thought you guys would find this funny!!!!

Tricia

susan s. 03-25-2007 08:06 AM

Wow Tricia what a score  My Hubby and I were in Butte on the 18th. Spent the day with his mom and took her to lunch up there at the Gold Rush. We sat in the bar and had a glass of wine before lunch as there was quite a line for the restaurant. I saw the stained glass above the bar and was trying to make a quick copy of the design by hand but a napkin doesn't allow for the best flowing line drawing. I vowed to come back and take a pic. ( I had left my camera at home) Thought the stained glass design would translate into a beautiful quilt design. Then we took a tour of up town Butte. First time I had been all the way up there. Quite the view. If I had more time (It was a spur of the moment trip) I would have tried contacting you. I remember you saying you had a quilt display somewhere in town but, not sure where, or if it would be in place on a Sunday :-) . Anyway I recommend checking out the stained glass if you get a chance.

triciasquilts 03-25-2007 08:11 AM

oh wow, I wish we could have met, I had brunch at the Gold Rush on the 16th. Such good food. I had my camera with me too, if I would have even thought of taken a pic inside. Just got some outside with the grandkids! Well, let me know the next time you are in Butte. We will definitely get together!

Isn't Butte a neat place, such history!!

susan s. 03-25-2007 08:38 AM

OH! We will definitely be over more during this summer. Mom loves to camp and they also like to stay close to home. They have a motor home but, won't motor very far  so we plan at least one trip for camping. And will definitely give you a holler!

I use those, too! Good tip. :-)

Leslee 03-25-2007 08:45 AM

Of course Kathy would keep her quilt blocks in chicken boxes. She keeps her cute little chickens in pottery!

Knot Sew 03-25-2007 09:02 AM

Those pottery dishes are also good to bake in........but not the scrawny little thing......... LOL My aunt had a banty called Wanda, she chased any visitors, would fly into your face, my cousin Wanda was terrified of her. It used to be so funny. cluck cluck whats her name?

Debbie Murry 03-26-2007 04:49 AM

Hey Susan I had a similar experience only in a restruant bathroom. I fell in love with the mosic tile on the floor so I took a paper towel, laid it on the floor and with a pencil scratched out a rubbing from it. My hubby thought I was nuts. But we all know when inspiration hits us you just gotta act on it the best way you know how.

quiltingmimipj 03-26-2007 07:06 AM

I have used pizza boxes for quite a while now. Also, a really good item is an Avon box that the representatives get their orders in the mail. They will hold a good sized project. I happened by a house where the Avon lady was throwing many of them away. I got all that my car would hold.

susan s. 03-26-2007 07:55 AM

Did you ever use the pattern in a quilt? You know that might make an interesting challenge! To make a block based on a pattern inspired by an eye catching design encountered while out and about :D

Debbie Murry 03-26-2007 11:48 AM

No not yet. But it's on my to do list. It was kinda hex shaped with triangles and diamonds. Each shape had a darker thin line around it, almost like stained glass. I thought I'd only make one big block and maybe frame it. Haven't decided yet what colors to use.

susan s. 03-26-2007 04:57 PM

Before you get into hexagons maybe you should check out that subject in the forum. Some of our member quilters are apparently being driven somewhat bonkers over hexagons.

Debbie Murry 03-27-2007 03:18 AM

I did a baby blanket once with grandmas flower garden (has hexes). It started out hard to match up cuz I was sewing by machine. Half way thru I decided to sew it by hand instead. It worked alot better cuz you have more control over your stitches. I'm glad it was a small quilt or I never would have finished it. That's one reason why I'm only going to make one big block for my wall. I found my colors, 3 shades of blue, 2 shades of rose, 1 shade of gold and 1 black for the sashing.
