Hi..I'm making some placemats and wondered what's the best to use for batting. Is polyester ok? Or should I use cotton or even insulbrite? Thanks

I use Warm and Natural, 100% cotton...But I use it for almost everything! The Hancock's associate told me yesterday that lots of people are buying the bamboo batting, she thinks because it's so much more eco-friendly. I may try it soon!

/warm and natural, exactly..just would make sure it is a flat batting i think. |
I would use a cotton batting, because it is flat and takes heat well.
No worries if a hot item is set on it, where polyester may flatten out and never fluff back up again. I think cotton would also be more protective of the surface under the mat, too. |
I would not use a high loft batting - you don't want your water glass tipping over!!
I use W&N for almost anything, but I also use a couple of layers of flannel for some projects - when I can find them cheap at a thrift store. A word on bamboo batting - it sews up great but do not use it for baby blankets - it has a faster burn time than most other battings. (We had a speaker at our guild who did burn tests on all battings in order to put together a comprehensive comparison of what's on the market.) |
Thanks...I have used mostly poly in the past but was wondering about the heat issue. Think I'll go with cotton for these :)

I use the batting that is adhesive, but I also sew QAYG placemats...then use decorative stitches on top.

I make a lot of placemats and I always use Warm & Natural OR Warm & White. Not too thick but gives a nice firmness to the placemat. The first ones I made, I didn't use any batting and was very disappointed. Learned from that... :)

I like Pellon Fleece, I buy it with my 40% off coupon and buy the whole bolt.
