What do you use for a quilt that needs plain white fabric for the sashing and background? Is there a quality fabric for this purpose that costs less than $9.50 per yard?
I use a white on white tonal fabric from my LQS.
Hancocks has a sale on solids for 2.99
I like the Kona Cotton....usually about $6/yd?

I have been known to double a thin white to make it work but it was a little more tricky. I can be cheap, i mean, frugal :)
I go to TJMaxx, Marshalls and Ross periodically, and look for king size sheets- a good quality long staple cotton at about 200-300 thread count, that feels nice. And buy all the white ones available.
I'm also chea.. frugal, yeah that's it, frugal. |
I buy Kona solids from Jo-Anns or Hancocks when I have 50% coupons. It is what I would call a quality fabric and can get it for $2.99 with the coupon. I also buy a lot of the black and other colors atr this price.
the kona when you can find it on sale works very well. also depending on the pattern, blocks and fabric used already a nice tonal works really well.
I don't normally use solids, I like Tone on tones far better. The few times I have used solids, Kona seems to be one of the better fabrics. Our Hancocks and Joanns both have it.
I like the Kona too!
Hancock's of Paducah has really quality solids, Kona and more for reasonable prices.
You can't beat Kona solids for quality. I've noticed some white fabrics are see through; Kona is not.
I like muslin or a whitish marble or WOW for most of my whites. But if you need a plain solid white white, you can't beat Kona cotton.
I would use kona solids. Hancock of Paducah has it for less then $6 a yard and often has sales on Kona solids. It is a little meatier then most fabrics and does not shine through like whites often do.
I got 100% cotton today from Hancock's for $2.99 a yard. The lady said it was quilting quality. It is thick and soft and you can not see your hand through it. See I am learning ladies and gents. lol
I love Kona fabrics..you would not be disappointed in using it.

KONA COTTON! KONA MAKES THE BEST SOLIDS AROUND  they have a couple different WHITES. i believe Kona Snow is the whitest...around here the kona solids run about $5-$6 a yard.

I usually use white on white or if I need plain white I use Kona Cotton.
Kona!!
I use tonal. white on white or ivory on white. I also use sheets.
Kona is great for solids - but I usually use white on white instead of solid white. My favorite site is Virginia Quilters
http://www.virginiaquilter.com/cgi-l...047+1291347907 They "enhance" the white on white so you can actually see the pattern. |
When I need a plain white I use a high qulaity bleached muslin. That being said I don't use it much anymore, I prefer tone on tone.. its a bit more interesting.
Kona is available at both Joann & Hobby Lobby so you should be able to find a coupon for at least 40% off. Sometimes Hobby Lobby has wide Kona too
Kona solids is the way to go! You can get all shades of white at both Joann's and Hancocks.
I love Kona cottons but they are so expensive. I go to Wal-Mart and get white on white or tonal. I had gotten the same at Joanns, it was thin it was garbage and they charged me almost $6. I went to Wally's got the same fabric, design and feel except the one from wally's wasn't so thin you could see thru it, what a rip off Joanns is. Oh did I say that outloud? It was good quality fabric so if you don't want to pay thru the nose try there.

I've used Kona Cotton and also the cotton sateen that Hancock sells.
I picked up some white at the local quilt shop for way less than that.
Try some of the online stores. |
As a handquilter I learned the hard way to avoid cotton sheets unless they are a low thread count. I also have trouble with tone on tone if it is heavily printed or flocked. Kona is probably your best bet for consistant solid fabrics.
I really like Kona as well
Southern Belle is wonderful solids... the quality of the white is so nice..

I like Moda Bella Solids for my quilts. It's the same quality as the Kona cotton but has a softer hand.
I would also use a tone on tone. It could look plain from a distance.
Or you could also use a good muslin. Pickle |
what do you buy for muslin?
Kona solids are great to work with.
This was my first post and I am glad I did it! Thanks for all of your helpful advice!
Definitely white on white, adds dimension
