Pleasant surprise..

Signed up to a crafty class a few months ago when it was on sale for 9.99. Finally decided to look into it yesterday. The class is Traditional Blocks Made Easy...teacher is Anita Grossman Solomon. I have to say I really enjoyed watching her and what she was doing.....this is the first time for me and crafty but probably not the last. I will try the blocks she is teaching. I especially like her idea of potting fusible interfacing on the fab before cutting a diagonal....easier dealing with bias edges....

DOTTYMO 06-27-2013 05:04 AM

I have a few crafsty classes paid for. Love watching them and learning but not tried the exercises .i enjoy the reading to action firs and follow up in my time which these allow.

tuckyquilter 06-27-2013 09:38 AM

Question?? When you sign up for a Craftsy class, do you download it to your computer to watch any time you want?

BellaBoo 06-27-2013 09:45 AM

You don't download, you can watch it online any time you want. Crafty is a great bargain. I pay much more for workshops and classes at my guild.

Anita's newest book Rotary Cutting Revolution is fantastic. It has become one of my favorite quilt books.

What is the book about? Are there patterns in it?

twinkie 06-28-2013 03:23 AM

Sounds like something you would really enjoy. Don't forget to show us the finished product.

sewbizgirl 06-28-2013 04:18 AM

I've bought several Craftsy classes but haven't watched the first one! I actually forget I have them most of the time!

sparkys_mom 06-28-2013 04:57 AM

I signed up for that class, too. I really like it. I've made one block and just ironed all my starched batik squares yesterday. I'm ready to try it, :D I'm signed up for quite a few classes but, as the saying goes, 'my eyes are bigger than my stomach' and I haven't done a lot with most of them. I think retirement is calling me. :)

NOELLA 06-28-2013 05:28 AM

I also have a few classes that I have paid for and haven't viewed will get to one day . I did the 2012 BOM have to sandwich and quilt . I can't decide what backing to get solid or print.
you will love the classes as I . Good luck.

skjack 06-28-2013 05:54 AM

I love the classes too. I am doing the BOM 2013 very different for me. also doing Carol Doak's, and Kaye England's classed they are two of my favorite teachers. closest thing to being able to take a class in person. enjoy.

ahafun 06-28-2013 06:10 AM

I used to watch her on Simply Quilts - she is great! I have signed up for her Craftsy class, too, but just haven't yet had time to get started with it. I was excited to see her join the Craftsy lineup - she is so doggoned creative!

Nammie to 7 06-28-2013 06:11 AM

I've been buying the quilting classes and have started the first one - the quality is amazing. I'm really going to enjoy these classes.

gmcsewer 06-28-2013 06:24 AM

I am glad you posted about interfacing on back of fabric you want to cut on the bias. I ihave a plaid I want to use as an inner border and it will only look good if I do bias. It is a closely woven fabric so I think with interfacing I can keep it from stretching and making a wavy border. I intend to measure the quilt carefully and be sure to make the border pieces just to size. Thanks for your comment.

needles3thread 06-28-2013 07:18 AM

Where do I find info on the crafty classes you all are talking about, please?

DonnaC 06-28-2013 07:47 AM

www.craftsy.com

Lots of great classes to choose from!

Emma S 06-28-2013 08:19 AM

I took Leah Days class on FM. It gave me the courage to quilt my first one.

DeneK 06-28-2013 08:52 AM

I love Anita's book Rotary Cutting Revolution. She lives on my sewing table along with Ricky Tims. They are my go-to guys for ideas and information.

linda faye 06-28-2013 10:45 AM

I am participating in the 2012 BOM and the 2013 BOM on Craftsy. I wanted to fine tune my skills and these two classes have been great! Being able to watch them when and as many times as I want to has really helped. One class is more traditional than the other class and I love the two styles. These classes are free! I also have signed up for another Pant class.

Give the two BOM classes a try. I think you will really like them.

oldtisme 06-28-2013 11:06 AM

I made the Asterisk block from BOM 2013 and then made 15 more of the same to make my 1st quilt, so far thats as far as I've gotten is the blocks but it was fun making them & exciting as it was my 1st attempt at quilting.

CAS49OR 06-28-2013 12:26 PM

Same here! I actually went through one of them and learned to knit (Knit Lab) but have had several others for at least a year now but never get around to using them! I'm beginning to wonder if I should just ask for a refund, but keep thinking I'll do them "some day".

I LOVE my Craftsy classes. Since I live in the boonies where classes are nonexistent, this is so convenient for me. I am enrolled in about 8 classes, have watched them all, but haven't had the time to actually finish any of the projects. I just take each project to the point of saying "I can do that," and put them away for later when I'll actually need that technique. There is only one class that I am tempted to ask for a refund. The reason being that I can't seem to connect the concepts to quilting (I think the class would be great for art students.) But otherwise I am quite impressed with the classes. I highly recommend them.

WOW, look at that - she is on here with us!!!!!! How cool is that. Anita, love your Craftsy class.....sorry I missed your presentation at Prairie Star Quilters Guild....St. Charles is not too far from where I am..........

Talked about your fusible interfacing for diagonal control at a bee today.........got some "good idea" comments!!!!!!

Yes, now I am going to go to amazon.com and buy all of her books that they have.......her techniques are simple, common sense........no measuring odd size fractional block pieces......so here I go now with my CC in hand!!!!!!

I can't wait until our guild meets in the fall......hopefully I will have done a quilt using her technique/pattern......and I can show and tell!

jeanharville 06-28-2013 04:40 PM

I've taken her class on Craftsy too and I must say I learned more about preping for successful piecing from her than from any of the other Craftsy classes or from youtube. I am so glad she didn't assume we already knew the tips and techniques that she uses. One of the hints that has worked well for me is pressing the seam open. It makes measurements much more accurate for me. I'm also glad she's a member here too. great!

My time 06-28-2013 06:16 PM

They have some great class bargains this week. I signed up for the Norah McMeeking paper piecing class. Has anyone else signed up for this class? Her Bella Bella quilts are Specacular.

I haven't taken any of the Crafty classes as I have dial-up yet :( But I do look at them and think I will take some when I get a faster speed on the computer. Here is where you can find Crafty: [email protected]

Word of advice. Sign up for the free ones first to make sure you have no problems viewing them.

This will also get you on their email list and several times a month they have classes on sale. I have bought all my classes on sale!

If you go through Leah Days website you will get a major discount for her classes.

Thanks for the recommendation about Anita's classes - I have been on the line about buying another class - this looks like it will be my next one!

Becky Crafts 06-29-2013 01:26 PM

I did the 2012 free BOM with Craftsy and just gave the finished quilt to my granddaughter who loves it. I signed up for a class on free motion feathers and I'm making a quilt right now that I will use to practice on. My brother requested one of my quilts & I don't have time to practice, so I do my practicing on the actual item. So far, so good! I'm hoping my luck continues... So far, I've gotten raves from family/friends so guess I'm not doing too bad! :-)

Remember that lots of starch will keep it from stretching out of shape, too. Good luck.

Pepita 06-29-2013 07:04 PM

So when you watch, are you supposed to be doing it at the same time, or is it more like a lecture?

CAS49OR 06-29-2013 09:44 PM

Great advice. I found I didn't have enough download speed to view the classes properly. Craftsy asked me to use http://www.speedtest.net/ and send a report.

It was helpful because I found I was not getting the speed I thought I was, I needed to upgrade.

Craftsy offered a refund if I was going to keep my same connection.

I did the 2012 BOM as well, and am behind on the 2013 BOM. I have really enjoyed the different teachers and methods.

I am signed up for lots of free ones and a couple that I paid for on sale really cheap. I'm doing the embroidering on tshirts now and I watched it; downloaded my supply list then watched it again in segments to make sure I was doing it the right way. The good thing is that you can replay the same section mulitple times until you understand it and you can watch it as much as you want too. My first tshirt is almost done then I'm starting on the one that has an embroideried cow neck added to it.

I put off joining Craftsy for a long time. When I took the plunge last year, I've taken a whole bunch now, more than I ever thought I would. I usually wait until they are on sale, before getting another one. I too have a couple classes that deal with knitting that I haven't watched yet, but winter isn't too far away. I really like that you can ask a question, maybe even something not totally related to the class and still get an answer from the instructor. If they don't know the answer they'll ask someone else who might and then get back to you. I also like the fact you can watch over and over and all times of the day or night.

Craftsy has a basic instruction for sergers. I am one of the legion that owns one that has never been used. Forty dollars seemed steep, so I put it on my wish list and a couple days later they offered it to me for $15. Really think I am going to take it.

Hmmm, will look into that..I too have a serger that I have under used...would like to really get to know it!

That is so cool that she posted here!!

I bought the same class and just loved all her little tips. Ms. Anita even gives you a free ebook of her book "Rotary cutting Revolution". A great class AND a free ebook- it's a win-win!! :)

Ohhhh- she is a HUGE fan of starch! I think her fabric stands on it's own!!

I have signed up for several classes--all on sale or free. The only ones I have had time to watch are the 2012 and 2013 block of the months (free). They are so good and very helpful. I am planning to catch up this winter when it is snowy and dreary. I am sure they will cheer me up.

I have a bunch of classes that I have never watched. I finally got my grandchildren's quilts done, so after I have my holiday gifts made, I will treat myself to watching classes
