Poll: What would you do?

I was cutting the pieces for my son's dinosaur quilt today and was mortified to discover that I'd cut a stack of 7 1/2 x 2 1/2 rectangles instead of 8 1/2 x 2 1/2. The fabric came from my grandma's stash and is dated 1997, so it's not going to be easy to find more (though I did post a picture in the "in search of" forum just in case).

Assuming I can't find it though, what would you do? I am two rectangles short.

a) Pick a different color for just those two pieces.
b) Stitch the shorter rectangles together and trim to make the right size, then quilt in such a way that maybe no one will notice.
c) Buy some new fabric and redo all the rectangles for that color.
d) Some other super smart idea that will make all my problems go away.

:)

I would pick a different fabric for those two and center them, or put them someplace that it looks like you planned it. That's what I do when I make mistakes!

Wantaquilt 03-02-2013 04:22 PM

If it was me, I would just try to match the color as close as you can since you are only 2 short. I really don't think it will be that noticeable. I have been known to add on to one piece before after I miss-cut a piece, but it was only one. I would hate to have to do that to all of them. But, others may have other suggestions for you. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Vicki

Dolphyngyrl 03-02-2013 04:38 PM

I would stitch the 2 rectangles together, once quilted it will not be noticable except to you, i have done this andd had no problem

DebraK 03-02-2013 04:50 PM

i've done this too. Waste not, want not ;-)

mucky 03-02-2013 04:53 PM

I would piece them together. I have done it many times and you really have to look to see it. I think it would be more obvious changing color even if it was close.

BellaBoo 03-02-2013 04:56 PM

I patch fabric pieces a lot especially if I run short of fabric for a block or border. It's a quilt.

momto5 03-02-2013 05:23 PM

Match the color as closely as you can; then add borders until you get to the size you want. I wouldn't do a thing to the rectangles except sew them like they were supposed to be at 8 1/2 X 2 1/2. When you get them put together and the borders added, no one will know except you!

alikat110 03-02-2013 05:41 PM

I would choose b.....

QuiltnNan 03-02-2013 05:43 PM

i choose option B

Chasing Hawk 03-02-2013 05:45 PM

I would do "b"..........no ones gonna know if you don't tell.

Can't wait to see the finished quilt.

Tartan 03-02-2013 05:47 PM

B for me. If you run a line of quilted down the seam line you will never know it was pieced unless you confess. Why do I aways have I confess, why?:D

mighty 03-02-2013 06:02 PM

I also choose B!!!!

Nanny's dollface 03-02-2013 06:04 PM

I would choose "b" as well.

Put a seam in the pieces that are wrong and use them. It can be your secret---------------probably won't show much if you try to match the pattern and press carefully.

KwiltyKahy 03-02-2013 06:52 PM

I would chose b

Prism99 03-02-2013 07:28 PM

I would choose option A. Least amount of hassle! :) And makes the quilt unique.

Chicca 03-03-2013 08:10 AM

I would stitch the two rectangles together. No one will notice but you! Sorry about your problem, but know you are not alone. I have done the same thing.

jcrow 03-03-2013 08:14 AM

fabricdepot.com sells hard to find fabric. You just might find it there. If not, I choose option B also.

Sarint 03-03-2013 08:21 AM

I like color, so I would choose a different color and make them pop out!

AlienQuilter 03-03-2013 08:28 AM

Option A. Then I would either cut several to include in other places on the quilt or put a large Appliqued Dinosaur over the two odd blocks. I have used applique before to cover up stuff and people just assume it's part of the pattern. One time I appliqued a pretty fussy cut rose and people raved more on the rose than on the block (it was a quilted pillow).

tulip43 03-03-2013 08:31 AM

I go with b as know would notice once quilted, many quilters do this

ube quilting 03-03-2013 09:00 AM

pick a different but similar fabric and make it one of those 'make do' quilts or

Sew the two short pieces together to make one block the correct size and make the last block a signing block.
peace

cjackaitlin 03-03-2013 09:05 AM

I vote b also.

Mariposa 03-03-2013 09:15 AM

I'd say b also. DO add similar fabric if needed. Perhaps put the two pieces can be put in opposite corners, and be a creative choice!

cathyvv 03-03-2013 09:22 AM

How old is your grandson? If he's under 8, I would just stitch the shorter rectangles together and not be too worried about it being noticeable. He won't care; he'll just see dinosaurs!

Good idea!!!!!!!! I have also done this and it is not noticible when quilted. Besides that it is for a BOY and he will not notice! He will just LOVE that Grandma made it!!!!!

linda8450 03-03-2013 09:41 AM

Why not pick an additional print in complimentary colors and replace several of the pieces, not just 2. Blend them in, and make them part of the design....a planned accident!

Monroe 03-03-2013 10:01 AM

I like linda8450's solution. Of course it would help to see what the pattern is. Please post when you get the top finished so we can see how it turned out.

Mkotch 03-04-2013 03:50 AM

b - no one WILL notice except the Quilt Police!

twinkie 03-04-2013 04:03 AM

I would definitely improvise with a different block. Good Luck

kathbug 03-04-2013 04:39 AM

I would sew together to make the correct size. I have done this with mistakes and shortage of fabric to correct. Once quilted you will not notice,

junegerbracht 03-04-2013 05:47 AM

I think you should go with what you feel most comfortable with - everyone has a different level of "perfection" or what is "good enough". What would bother you might not bother me and what would bother me might be ok with you. Good luck.

This is what I would do. I have done this also- dontcha just hate it when you make dumb mistakes? Have done it so many times!

GailG 03-04-2013 06:13 AM

I choose B

Debbie C 03-04-2013 06:13 AM

I would use a co-ordinating fabric for those two extras and, in fabric pen, write a mom to son special note in one and the occasion/name of quilt/date on the other. Personalize it just for him. It'll look like you planned it that way!

Southern Judy 03-04-2013 06:56 AM

I also have done this and once quilted you will never notice.

ccthomas 03-04-2013 07:04 AM

What about a special dinosaur applique for those two???

mom-6 03-04-2013 07:11 AM

If you have enough of the original fabric to add the necessary length to each of the short rectangles I would just match the design up as much as you can when doing so and not worry about it. Nobody but you is going to notice that extra seam. I do it frequently with no problems.

bjgallent 03-04-2013 07:19 AM

I would piece it to make the correct size. I have an old quilt from my husband's grandma. She pieced tiny squares to get a full square.
