9.99 to 11.50 and rising. Cotton prices are going up.

I haven't been in a LQS in so long.Mostly because there weren't any really close to me in GA.And now I have no clue where any are here in VA. Need to look up online and GPS. We(americans) have enjoyed lower prices on a lot of things that the rest of the world pays through the nose for, so I guess its our turn now. Just too bad it has to coincide with the recession. Makes it that much harder for the small businesses to continue

I guess its time to use up some of my stash I have instead of buying..our LQS fabric runs $9.50 to $10.50...way to much for charity quilts..maybe will have to do what our ancestor`s done and use some of our worn out clothes..
$8-$15. here and that is not LQS prices. I have noticed they are steadily going up, good thing I don't shop much there anymore.
I saw 9.99 Sat. on just arrived fabric.
Hi, I work part time in a local quilt shop and we have been told that in 2011 the price of quilting cotton will go up at least $2. Fabric we received in December was priced at $10.50 a yard. The price for shippimg has doubled in the last year, so now it is the fabric. I am located in West Central Missouri. :P
I don't have a LQS!
My local quilt shop doesn't carry the most current seasonal lines, however, all of her fabrics are Quality Brands. With her batiks, solids and tone on tone, season doesn't matter. Selections are always good. Her fabrics are always $4.99 a yard, the year around. I was working on a BOM at another shop, purchased the extra fabric for $9.50 per yard, then found the exact same fabric a week later atOld Town Quilts in Keller, Texas for $4.99! I go to her store first now.

That's a great idea - recycle some cotton and silk clothing. I've done it sometimes when I've looked for specific colors and find cotton shirits. Our thrift stores have gone up on their prices too, but still good finds for my Linus quilts.
9-10 or there about. Wish it was cheaper! slows down my buying at that price though Diane C.
$9.50-$9.98/yd average.
they do have a clearance wall which is nice. I'm spending less b/c $10 a yard is just too much for me to swallow unless I really gotta have the fabric for something. My "stash" building days are slowing down :( |
$9.99 to 12.00 a yard. $5.25 on our sale rack.
I just got the Hancock's sale e-mail for 30-60% off. You can find plenty of $3.98 and up fabric with a lot of top manufacturer's names, like Moda or Kaffee. It is time to load up but I think we are all being more cautious these days. More scrap quilts for me, but of course, they will have to coordinate for me.   Check out their website.
mines gone up to about $12 per yard, and batik even higher. Sale price is about 9.50 now. :(
8.99 in LQS 4 to 6 range at Wal-Mart...in WV
Looking at your averages it seems that fabric is about twice the price here in England. My son's got an American girlfriend. Maybe I'll get to come and visit all the lovely places you mention one of these days!
Where is there a discount store in Orange county? I couldn't even find a Joanne's when I was there this past summer for 2 months .
8.00 for prints, 8.50 for batiks, and 7.50 for solids. This is northern Wyoming. She like the pricing method because she mostly sells on the internet. Diane/Wyoming

Well just been to my LQS here in Spain, nearly had a heart attack Kona cotton Black 26.50€ per metre that equates to 32.63$ per metre. Thats why I normally buy it on the web, but this caught me out and I needed it quickly. 2 metres of Steam a seam 2 was 13.75€ per metre, but again had to have it for a project

Wow it is really getting expensive. I haven't been in our LQS lately. Last time I was in I bought probably 30 yards of Batik fabric that was on a great sale. It also happened to match a quilt top I had just finished. Did I feel like I had won the lottery??? It was marked down 40% and an extra 20% off that. I'm going to have to start digging into my stash. That is what it's for. There is no way I can pay what you guys out of the USA pay.
Wish I had a LQS then I could tell you. But heard today cotton price up 80% so they is going to make a gigantic difference.
$8 and up at my LQS

I think we all are having sticker shock this new year! Have you all received your copy of Keepsake Quilting??? A huge increase in prices. Very disheartening but I am happy to have a huge stash in my sewing room and only have to shop occasionally for fabric. Really hard on quilters as we need our fabric!!
$11/yard. I will be making scrap quilts and looking for sales.
LQS's around here are retailing from $9/yd for their older stuff up to $12/yd for the newest stuff coming in. (sale prices not included)
Due to worldwide demand for cotton increasing every year, and ongoing shortages as well as increases in global freight, the cost of dyes, the cost of printing and everything else increasing, most forecasters aren't seeing anything but continuing increases in the prices of fabric into the foreseeable future. Most shops are trying to hold down prices to the end consumer, but sooner or later you either have to raise prices or go broke and out of business. |
We quilters all have stashes to be used, and online sites can sell for less ... this will be hardest on LQS, they will be hurt most. So support your LQS !!
The newer fabrics I have seen are around $10.50 per yard now here in Northern California.
I consider myself lucky - my closest lqs has fabrics at $7.95 a yard - even batiks. Another sells short ends for $2.95 a yard - I'm a scrappy quilter so I love that. My favorite reasonable place is crows nest quilting fabrics on Ebay - Dawn has wonderful prices and good fabric. And Thousands of bolts is another great place with great prices. I keep hearing prices on cotton will really go up, so I am stocking up. I've spent a lot of money on fabric recently - love it!

I have to go buy 6 yds of white so I can start a "V" square---think I might look for some good quality all cotton sheets. Cannot be any higher priced.
A couple of shops here sell fabric for $6.50 a yard for Moda, Thimbleberries, and other name brand fabric, including Batiks. However the selection is limited. Another shop sells close to that price and I bought civil war fabric for under $5 not on sale. :-)
Mine is about 8.75
It's $9.50 at one store I was in recently - southwest CO
$8-11 in Montana...I also heard the price of cotton has really gone up, so the cost of fabric should be rising!
Today was the day to choose colors and materials for another quilt. I was at Walmart and chose rose, gray and black. For 9 yards of material I paid a little over $30. I'm sure I bought more than I need but would rather have left over than run out and go back and all is gone. The new quilt patter is called "Ribbons".
