Well, since others are advertising their own online stores in this thread, I may as well do so too.
At our online store, fabrics are priced between $5/yd (for older sale fabrics,) and our standard top price for the newest fabrics, which is now $8.90. Our highest-end Japanese silk-screened fabrics by Lecien and others, normally retail priced at $14-15/yd are higher, currently at around 10.50. The next round of our newest fabrics arriving this spring will be slightly higher, probably slightly over $9/yd. We do not raise prices on fabrics we bought at a lower price point, unless it's replacement stock purchased at a higher price. We ship to most countries, with the exception of a few where there are hostile governments, rampant mail theft or unreliable postal service. Over 20% of our business comes from International orders, so we're very experienced at shipping internationally. |

What is the average price per yard at your LQS? I think mine is $9.50 for prints from all the different mills
Anywhere from $8 and up; depending on the brand name. That's why I'm stocking up now on end of year sales. |
My lqs seldom offers sale prices on current stock. New prices before year-end were around 10.50/yd for Moda, Benartex, Thimbleberries. I didn't notice batik prices.

Hi there TanyaLynn and TexasJuneBug...
I live 7 miles south of Waco in Hewitt...Am I close to you guys. Sounds like we might be. |
Old collections - $20 . All other US$20-30 .
I only buy online and this type of purchase is increasing. Unfortunately some stores do not ship internationally, other ship the most expensive way to be on the safe side. I´ve been ordering online a lot for years now without loosing a single package. A question of knowing how things work locally. Should anyone be interested, feel free to pm me. |
In Alabama prices are $10 to $11 a yard at the quilt stores. The price of fabric is going up. My web site will be up Feb. 1 and I'll have quilt shop quality for several dollars less. I can buy wholeale. Hope you will take a look.

$7.00 - 15.00 Depending on what you want to spend.

Every LQS in Southern Ontario that I have visited lately has fabric from $12.99 to $18.99 with most in the $14 - $16 a metre range. A metre is 39 inches so it is slightly bigger than your yard. Mennonite shops which are often part of the home are a little cheaper $8- $13 but they seldom carry the latest fabrics. I was in the Quilting Bee quilt shop in Fonthill Ontario yesterday (one of the ten best quilt shops summer 2010)and their fabric was $15-$17 a metre with some clearance fabrics at $7 upstairs.
|
Over here (Netherlands) we pay 21- 28 dollar per meter (1,1 yard). That's why a lot of Dutch quilters order online in the US.
|
In Florence, Oregon, it is probably on average, 9.50a yard.
|
dont have an LQS here in Denton. the closed some time ago. they are building a super joanns so we will get a ride and see what the prices are there.

We are between $9 and $10 a year here
|
I just got Hancocks of Paducah catalog and the prices start at $9.98 up to $10.50 for batiks. Thank goodness for Connecting Threads
|
The best shop close to me sells regular fabrics from $7 to $9 and has a sale room with fabric for $5. I am in Southern California.
|
In New Zealand we also pay $26-$30 per meter. Makes quilting an expensive but still very pleasurable hobbie. I conesequently love scrappy quilts as I buy a fat quarter at a time so it is more affordable over time for me and not a huge outlay at one time.
|
I pay around $9.75/yd for full price. The Amish store in the next town is a bit cheaper - usually around $8/yd.
|
$8.50 - $14.99/yd here on Ohio depending on maker
|
LQS in Chapel Hill- $8.50 per yard.
LQS in Franklin - from $9-$10.00 per yard. |
Good Lord, where are all these people shopping?? Maybe I misunderstand what LQS is I couldn't afford to quilt if I had to spend 9.00 a yard for fabric. I shop online now a lot (age and health prohibit going out much), also Hancock and Joann. Everything has to be on sale and I never pay more than $4-5 per yard.
|
Our LQS fabric is from 9.99 - 10.99 but she has 40 - 50 % off sales several times a year that is when I buy!

I think that was the intent of the original question, to find out the prices at the local 'little' shops, not the big chains. |
it's about $8 to $10 where I live. I too, will shop for lower prices. The LQS here has a wide selection of quality prints and solids, it's the old home-town store- where everyone helps everyone else! I have reasoned it out, and at Walmart or any other online store that has lower prices, if I still purchase at $6 or less a yd. I will come out cheaper in the longrun. After any notions that I need, plus thread if I don't have it,batting, backing and I have just learned from you guys how to make my own binding.

Here in Australia the prices start at $12.00 per meter up to and including $25-30 per meter which is your 39 inches. I go where I can get specials or better quality for cheaper prices in nearby Ipswich, we have Spotlight stores which is similar to your Joann stores.
|
have 3 locals I go to in CT one everything is 8.99, second 10.99 and final 9.50....I always ck out clearance first....
I go to and old Mill Fabric shop in RI where it varies so I shop more when I'm up there. Most of my shopping is at Joann's with coupons...never pay full price...But somedays you just want to support your local shops and they sometimes carry fabrics I can't find at Joann's i.e. Novelty Landscape for the Scene's I do. |
$10.50 in Austin,Texas
|
I didn't know I 'had it so good'. I pay between $3 and $5 per yard and they often have good sales besides. One has to check the quality and brand, but it is almost always good fabric.

I haven't been out shopping lately for fabric but will be going this weekend for other things if the snow doesn't pile up to much! I will check the prices to see what they are when I go.
|
I was told in our quilt club that with the prices of cotton that beginning in January, now, that cotton was going up to well of $11 a yard but should go back down at some point, yah right, once things go up they never come down just like gas we are up to almost $3.50 a gallon and they blame it on Katrina. Its just the gas companies that are hogs. Never mind us who are struggling to make ends meet. Kim

There is a small LQS that sells all fabric for $6/yard. FQ's are $1.50, and she will cut a FQ from any bolt. She doesn't carry the "latest", but the fabrics are all top quality and beautiful.

Fabric is usually in the 8 to 10 dollar range in Quilt Shops and my hauband always wanted to know why I bought so much fabric when it was less than $7. Love sales and going to Amish Country or online. Fortunately because of buying so much when I really didn't need it, I have plenty of fabric and only need to acquire small amounts as needed. I did have to buy some about a month ago spent $23 to make 2 blocks but that is rare. Hubby would have been shocked.
|
Last time I checked out prices at the LQS,MODA was 9.50,she carries some flat folds that sell for 4.79-5.99 a yard.
There is also a fabric store(not a quilt shop, but carries 100% cotton)her fabric starts at 3.89 a yard, and she does get Thimbleberries and some Civil War all nice quality. |

$9-10 here in WI.
Every month my LQS has a 30% off sale on whatever color is the birthstone of the month. I just went this morning and got some red's for my stash. Gotta love those sales! |
Over here fabric at the good stores would be upwards of $20, mostly around $24 per metre
