Problem batting

Anyone else ever have this problem? Usually I use cheap batting from wherever, but this time I ordered Hobbs Poly-Down Premium Polyester. When I unrolled it today I find this --
The "billowing" part does not want to lie down, and the "tight" parts will not stretch. What to do? |
I have never encountered this with Hobbs polydown. I would let it relax overnight. If you are quilting by hand or on DSM (without a rack) it should sandwich up no problems.
They have an 800 number you can call them. http://www.hobbsbondedfibers.com/contact.html Edited to add, I think you will find Hobbs to be much more forgiving of manipulation then cheap batting. So if you need to smooth it you don't have to use a really gentle hand. It can be man-handled pretty roughly without tearing and I have given it some pretty good tugs without it tearing as well. |
Will a few minutes in the dryer (don't let it get hot enough to melt the polyester)relax it? Maybe hang it on the shower rod and let it steam in the bathroom?

How do I remove any creases or wrinkles caused by packaging. You can place the batting in the drier for 5 to 10 minutes with a damp washcloth to remove creases or wrinkle. |
I've had battings that came out of the package like that, and was able to smooth it out so that the folds and wrinkles didn't show at all in the quilt.

Glad that worked for you.
I had some Quilters Dream cotton batting that looked sort of like that when I took it out of the package - it never did get smoothed out to my satisfaction - but the LAer said it worked fine and the finished quilt is fine. |
I usually put mine in the dryer and am able to use it without any problems.

I had written an email to Hobbs before you guys helped me out, and got this response from an executive vice president saying: "Please take a hair dryer on medium heat and medium fan speed and blow over the batting. This has been helpful when this has happened in the past. Please feel to call if I can help. I will be available on my cell phone over the weekend."
Now that's what I call customer service! |
