Wouldn't the author of that article roll over in their grave if they walked in on some of us when we are sewing...LOL Blessings

grammiepamie 12-07-2010 09:15 AM

Are you girls telling me that you don't sew in your best party dress, garter belt and silk stockings and your best pair of stilletos like I do?????? I sew in my favorite woobies and now that it's cold outside fuzzie slippers. (woobies=sweat pants and a really big non-matching sweatshirt.) LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL I really do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sewingladydi 12-07-2010 09:37 AM

So does that mean I shouldn't be sewing in my PJ's with my hair uncombed at 2 in the afternoon?

sgardner 12-07-2010 09:42 AM

I'm surprised it didn't mention a nasal wash. That's right ladies, most circa 1900 guides for women said that you weren't really clean until you've rinsed out your nasal cavities as well.

eaglebeak1960 12-07-2010 09:43 AM

LOL too funny Ladies being a male quilter I quilt in bare feet in the summer, shorts A(shirt optional) winter time can find me in slippers an old soft pair of pj's hair a mess face not shaven.. in otherwords a day at home sewing my quilts not wanting to be bothered by the outside world

seleyrn 12-07-2010 10:08 AM

Comfort is the way to go if in the sewing room. I do like to have the space neat and organized when I work, I usually don't though and sewing is less enjoyable when I can't find the pin cushion. or the seam ripper. Solved the seam ripper problem by using circles of stick on Velcro and now attach it to the side of my machine. The same for my small 6" ruler attached to the front. The only hitch is how many times I forget to put it back in those spots when I am finished using them..

amma 12-07-2010 11:16 AM

Oh My!! ROFLMBO not ever in my house :D:D:D

Yup, I follow Flylady's suggestions as much as possible.
But as for the lace up shoes/boots, that is a must for me because of a previously broken ankle. The rest follows..some of the time.

But sweat shirt, jeans, boots are really comfy for me. Good for raking leaves today, must remember to put on makeup or someone will mistake me for Gravel Gertie's Grandma.

Those old enough to remember Gravel Gertie should sit down and rest from the effort of remembering. (She was a friend of Dick Tracy)

Ramona Byrd 12-07-2010 12:53 PM

Please try to remember Phyllis Diller's housekeeping tip..
If the dust is thick enough for your kids to write in, make sure they don't put the date with it.

ArtisticDesign 12-07-2010 12:57 PM

rofl..If I looked all that good..Hubby'd never let me sew in peace...

Ramona Byrd 12-07-2010 12:59 PM

I do have memories of my aunts searching madly for the mate to their thigh high single hose, those babies came in PAIRS of legs, panty hose has freed us from that nightmare. When did they become popular, in the 1960s perhaps?
One of my Aunts claimed she only got the same color of hose, no matter how many, so she could always find a match.

KwiltyKahy 12-07-2010 03:32 PM

Amen!! I don't own any makeup. That is money I could spend on fabric!! If unexpected guests don't like the way I look, don't come.

Did they have Lipstick in 1900? Drop by my house when I am sewing and you will find me barefoot and in only a T-shirt. Following those instructions would only waste valuable sewing time. Lipstick would take up thead space and we all know sewing space is priceless real estate.

I just thought of something -- On Wednesdays I play cards from 1 - 4 at the Senior Citizens Center. One woman applies lipstick three or four times during that period. I have always found lipstick to be a total waste of time.

Are you kidding me?? Running a boob through with a needle or pin doesn't sound like fun! I guess I could tie them in a knot to keep 'em outta the way!! LOL!

tmg 12-08-2010 03:25 AM

I fell at this one. I don't do any of it. Sew barefooted, no makeup, and in my loose fitting clothes. So I don't pass.

bkb 12-08-2010 03:59 AM

Don't those rules apply only if you are working on a treadle?

LOL I have a sign outside my door that says this pad was clean yesterday sorry you missed it. Another good one is if you come to see me come anytime if you come to see the house make an appointment.
I do sometimes get dressed, not always with a bra but I do brush my hair and get my teeth out of their little bucket.

That's funny. I remember one time as a child my mother looking all over for her other garter. My brother Jim asked her what she was looking for, she said her garter to hold up her stockings. He said, " Is that what that was, I used it for....." I don't remember what he used it for but then my mother hurriedly sewed a piece of elastic together so she could hold her stockings up. Just think how pathetic we would feel if we had to wear DRESSES all day long!

gypsyquilter 12-08-2010 04:43 AM

I'm also in the camp of comfort overrules fashion any day of the week. I have clothes I specifically call my quilting clothes - my favorite sweatpants and my big fuzzy LL bean slippers. and I have to confess, i don't own any make up and never wear it. gosh, what were those ladies thinking

tdgiffin 12-08-2010 04:44 AM

Maybe I need to pull a June Cleaver, and wear my pearls while I am at it. Oh wait a minute, I don't have pearls! lol

QuiltingGrannie 12-08-2010 04:55 AM

O.k. I guess I'm the only odd one here.

I don't wear a dress, but before I get into the sewing room I am dressed in blue jeans and shirt or sweater and my hair is done. Make up is on a some days basis, but will be more now that the business will be open. Love working from home though!

Suzi 12-08-2010 05:15 AM

Quilting in my jammies. Never wear makeup. Husband is African-loves a natural woman. Thinks bras are unhealthy, just for keeping things still and secure when outside the home. Maia

Perfect ----- a natural woman is the way we were meant to be (my husband appreciates that also).

Moon Holiday 12-08-2010 05:18 AM

OMG, this is one of the reasons I love this board.... everyone needs a good dose of laughter every day, and boyoboy does this group know the importance of laughing! What a gift this board is. Love it and you all!

And it sure sounds like we're all sister twins when quilting.

pojo 12-08-2010 05:39 AM

I don't even own a dress or makeup I'm a plain person.

Wear jeans, teeshirts or sweatshirts.

I feel out of place being dressed up.

barb12makeitsew 12-08-2010 05:53 AM

that's what I've been forgetting to do!!! I run around getting dressed and putting something on the table - but forgot the Pledge and bleach. I'll start that today.

Sunflower Girl 12-08-2010 05:55 AM

Don't all of you sew with an evening gown on, white gloves and a tiara like me?

Here is a picture of a magnet on my fridge. My DDIL got it for me a few years ago. She always brings the Thanksgiving turkey to my house to cook, then we take it and all the trimmings to my daughter's house for the dinner. I supply wine and crackers while we are prepping. I told her next year we have to dress up.

matraina 12-08-2010 06:09 AM

That, most assuredly, take time away from the sewing - lots of time. It was cute, though. How times have changed.

reginalovesfabric 12-08-2010 06:17 AM

I with the ladies that sew in jammies.......

linmid 12-08-2010 06:22 AM

We have definitely "come a long way baby". Thank goodness!

Go through a beauty ritual of orderliness, have on a clean dress.
Be sure your hands are clean, fingernails smooth - nail file and pumice will help.
Always avoid hang nails.
Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine where you can pick it up and dust your fingers at intervals.
This not only absorbs the moisture on your fingers, but helps keep your work clean.
Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on with care.
Looking attractive is a very important part of sewing for if you are making something for yourself, you will try it on at intervals in front of your mirror and you can hope for better results when you look your best.
Again, sewing must be approached with the idea that you are going to enjoy it and if you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should.
Therefore "spruce up" at the beginning so that you are free to enjoy every part of the sewing you do.

WAonder if this will make the quilts look better? Guess I had better start" dressing-up" more!
