My friend is a Foster Parent, and I offered to make a quilt for the child they are fostering, his court date is coming up and they are not sure what exactly will happen...I offered to make him a quilt, this is the first family environment that is stable for him and I know he loves and appreciates them. I am making him a spider man quilt.....
However, we want to make sure that this quilt travels with him where ever the next decision sends him...so the suggestion is the somehow put his name on it. Any suggestions on how to put a name on a quilt??? TIA |
When you make the label, put his name on it. For example:
Name of quilt Made for (childs name) made by Your city Date made |
But wouldn't a label just peel off?
|
Could you hand embroider his name in one of the blocks or borders?

I would quilt his name right on that quilt in a contrasting thread color. I have quilted names on quilts quite often. It isn't hard. And no one is about to pick out the quilting stitches!
Child's name in the flower quilting |
Well, you could always embroider it. If you don't want to do that how about just printing his name on a prominent block on the quilt.
I met a lady in a shop here in OKC who makes quilts for foster children and she told me that anything that was given to a child stayed with the foster parent where they were staying at the time so she always embroidered their name in about 4" letters on the top border of the quilt. My grandsons loved their Spiderman quilts. Bless you. |

Or you could applique his name as part of the quilt front. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. |
Thanks everyone, i am def. no good for hand doing anywork LOL, i could try the machine quilting his name, that might work. I also have a embroidery machine, i wonder if i can do it on the back fabric BEFORE it gets quilted.

Are there such a thing as cloth labels...When you say Labels, I am thinking ones in my printer from Staples LOL

I've made a separate label, then attached it to the back BEFORE quilting. That way, the label is not only hand sewn in place, but quilted in place.

I made my GD , she is 6yrs, one with her name. I had a friend embroider her name on a strip. I will attempt to add a pic of it.

I am making quilts for my son's friends who are expecting their 3rd boy. I used fusible applique & stitched the names on the backing before sandwiching, although I have thought about doing this to the front also.
Sorry for the quality of the photo - dark room, dark backing & cell phones do not mix sometimes... Happy Quilting! Susan |
Be very careful about putting your name and city on a foster child's blanket. There are various reasons that children are put into foster care. My neighbor had to, for years, take their youngest foster child and go into hiding whenever his bio-dad got out of prison. He was constantly threatening to take the child. If you want to put your name on it make it first name only or a nickname and DON'T put your city on it.
If you don't have an embroidery machine use Printed Treasures or something like that and print it out on your printer. Then sew it onto the backing and quilt it. There are also fabric labels available at most LQS or online. They come in a bolt and are regular fabric just with labels printed that can be cut out and written on with fabric markers. |

Pollyv9, if their name is on the quilt, does your friend think the quilt will stay with the child?? How sad that everything has to stay with the foster family! |

Before I got an embroidery machine, I bought sheets of fabric that you could run thru the computer printer. I designed label on computer and then printed it off on the sheet, cut to size and sewed on the back of quilt. I agree with Raptureready about not putting your name and city on the quilt.

If you have a machine that can do small lettering one way to put a name on the quilt is do the lettering on the binding before you put it on. I've done this on a couple of quilts and it turns out really cool. I don't have a picture of one right now though,

I know, we have a tendency to judge others by our own standards. If you would never think of kidnapping or hurting a child you don't think of anyone else doing it either. Sadly though, it happens. Determined bio-parents will use any means necessary to try to track down their children. Sometimes it's for welfare checks, sometimes it just a sense of entitlement or possessiveness, sometimes it's because they don't want to be denied their punching bag. I've known several foster parents that have had to, for one reason or another, even use false last names for their foster children.

That's so nice of you to make that boy a quilt. It may be one of only a few bright spots in his young life.

If this is through the front and back, I think that it would be preferable. It would be difficult to take out and not leave a mark. I don't understand the child having to leave the quilt with the foster parent. It was given to the child. I just made 6 pillowcases for the million dollar challenge and I would be upset if I found out that the foster parent kept it.

My name and the person who is fostering will NOT be on them any label..
This will simply be his name and the year it was made...for that reason specifically.

Thank you. Not only will you be protecting him but yourself and his foster parents as well. Many times it would be perfectly safe to put that info out there but you just never know when the one bad time would be.

We do live in a sad world. Someone told me that when you make quilts for charity they shouldn't be too fancy because some people will sell them for drugs. I just couldn't believe it.
I do make quilts for foster kids in our area. The quilts always go with the child, but the foster care system distributes the quilts so they know the child should have it. |
Here is how I put names on quilts!
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-24590-1.htm Scroll down a few pictures you can't miss them. What I do is print the name (in reverse) on the computer, and then trace it onto wonder-under then iron the wonder under onto the fabric I want to use for the name. Cut the letter out, and iron them onto the quilt whereever I want them. Then I simply stitch around the letters and contenue on with the quilt. once everything is done I right over it which holds it down even more than just stitching around it! Works great and I have not had a problem with the names coming off! |
For my college kids whose quilts I don't want to be stolen, I hand embroider their names in the borders on the quilt - left side, center or right side corner. I also put quilt by my name plus the year it was quilted. Things were frequently stolen in their dorms if they left their rooms without locking the doors but their quilts were never bothered as their names were on them large enough that no one would miss the fact that if they stole that quilt, they couldn't use it and to rip out my stitching would have left a visible imprint behind.
For the quilts I'm not concerned about being stolen, I use the embroidery alphabet on my sewing machine to make a label on a separate piece of fabric which I then fold and hand stitch in place. In this instance, if you do that, I recommend you machine stitch it in place because you don't want to risk the label coming loose. Machine stitching definitely holds longer and better than hand stitching for these things. In my case, I see my family recipients and would reattach the labels should the need arise. Hopefully his quilt will be able to travel with him where ever he goes since you are making it special for him. It would be a real shame for them to leave that quilt behind with the foster parents as the boy will need it. |
Make a label with using your embroidery machine.
sew the label to the quilt backing before quilting. |
LOL, i figured that out last night while playing with my embroidery machine LOL

The quilt police will probably jump on me for this but what's wrong with just writing on the back side of the quilt with a fabric marking pen who it's for and by whom? It' permanent.

I put Pam's name on her quilt and it is never coming off. She said her little granddaughter loves the quilt, so Pam just points out her name and that settles the ownership. The patterns for the letters are from quilters cache. I sent some to a member of the QB for one of her quilts. They go together pretty quickly. If you want them a little larger (like I did) just cut the outside piece wider. |

we attach a label to the back of the quilt. My sister and I use our embrodier machine and put something cute on it. Then we write...".With love and comfort" and our org. name |
I would put the child's name, with love from the current foster parents name, the dates, and your name as the quilter. Hopefully those will all be good memory names for this child.
|
I'd say put the child's full name on the quilt in
large, distinctive lettering. Maybe the date. Bless you for doing such a thing for a troubled child. |
yeah NO! There is no way on this green earth that I would put my name on a quilt that is going wherever a foster child goes, exp if there is a possiblity that he could go back to his bio-family! Let me tell you these families are NEVER happy that a foster family has their child and although the foster family has no say in the childs future they don't see it that way and they hold grudges! I have taken care of foster kids for MANY years. A friend of my family has always had foster children with different medical needs, and there is NO WAY I would allow the bio-family to know ANYTHING about me!
Anyways to the OP, Good luck with your quilt! |
sew the label down on which ever bottom side you are comfortable with and list all pertinent information and sew it down really tight all the way around so they have it forever.
