that QAYG (quilt as you go) requires hand sewing?!! ... :( .... Arrrrggghhhh!! I took a class on Saturday and, aghast, find out that it requires hand sewing! Betrayed, that's how I feel!! BETRAYED!!! :? :? ..(We need a symbol for "tongue in cheek" kidding.)

:| I thought I would be learning a new technique that would save time. Guess it does, to a point. But, hand sewing? They tell me to do it while watching tv. Nooooooo, that's my time for yarn work, computer games, etc. Ugh.

Okay, vent over. I feel better now that I've warned everyone. Spread the word. I'm relying on you! ;)

Grammy o'5 01-31-2011 09:39 AM

LOL! I do as little hand stitching as possible! But do have a tremendous respect for those of you who do beautiful hand quilting and the patience to do hand sewing.

The QAYG workshop I took last spring does NOT require hand quilting! Sew the seams so they face the top, then machine stitch strips of ribbon, bias tape, extra-large ric-rac, etc. over the tops of the seams.

sharon b 01-31-2011 09:39 AM

There may be more then one method - look to see if you can find one that can be done by machine . I make rag quilts and they are basically QAYG and done by machine

pollyjvan9 01-31-2011 09:39 AM

I saw a demo of "Fun and Done" another way to do QAYG and there is no hand work. I didn't look up any sites but I'm sure there are demos here on the Board or by searching for Fun and Done on the internet.

Oooooo, I like that better! Will have to try it.

sewwhat85 01-31-2011 09:42 AM

i have a friend that also refuses to hand sew lol

amma 01-31-2011 09:45 AM

I would try another method or figure out how to machine sew those last seams :D:D:D

There is at least one QAYG method that does it all by machine. It isn't as pretty (IMHO) but doable.

miholmes 01-31-2011 09:49 AM

I HATE handwork. I refuse to hand bind my quilts as well. I'm all about using the machine...I mean I it cost a lot of money, I might as well get the use out of it. :)

We had a class on QAYG and they used bias tape as well to connect all the pieces. It looked really easy. You might be able to find another method.

dkabasketlady 01-31-2011 10:03 AM

You can do it ALL by machine(I haven't - only done the hand sewing).

QBeth 01-31-2011 10:07 AM

I'm going on the hunt for those "other methods" plus try using the bias tape approach! When asked what type of quilt I was making (lap, etc.), I said it is a quilt for my cat Squeaky. Baby Peeps has one and Squeak is jealous!! :-) Given that we only made six blocks, I think Squeaky will be quite pleased.

And, for those of you who think cats don't know which blanky is theirs, guess again! :-) :-)

p.s., I should add that I am Rudy's "blanky"! The stinker doesn't need a quilt.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 01-31-2011 10:17 AM

There is a tutorial here on the board with no hand sewing.

Queen 01-31-2011 10:21 AM

Check this out! No hand sewing tutorial done by our own K3N.

I took a class on QAYG. She used wash-away thread and bias maker, there was no hand sewing. Looks great when she does it. I personally havent gotten that far into my project.

SuzyQ 01-31-2011 10:51 AM

I did a QAYG and machine stitched the sashing down with a fancy stitch on my machine. I did the binding with the same stitch ... no hand sewing at all.

Susan

ckcowl 01-31-2011 10:52 AM

there are plenty of QAYG projects that do not have any hand sewing what so ever, sounds like just the one method that shop likes. don't give up on the concept because one person told you you should hand stitch. Elenor burns has a great kids quilt called the 6-hour quilt that is a quilt as you go....when it's done it's done...no hand stitching whatsoever!

Yup. I took a Fun n Done class and noooo hand sewing for it.

KathyAire 01-31-2011 02:24 PM

I did QAYG before I got a longarm. I didn't do any hand sewing.

EasyPeezy 01-31-2011 02:47 PM

You can also check the tute by Deb Watkins here. No hand sewing.

Check out the cotton yard, with Betty Cotton, no hand sewing with this method and I love the 3D seams, and you can do fancy stitchs with your machine, lots of fun!

linhawk 01-31-2011 02:55 PM

I think you can QAYG either way. Hand or machine. Your choice

I put together a crazy quilt king size, it is a very heavy quilt, I won't use this method again. I am quilting a king size log c on my viking now. It takes me about 2 weeks to do one.

T-Bones mom 02-01-2011 04:26 AM

I do a method of QAYG that has no hand sewing. The results are beautiful. There is no bias tape, just your material you are using. I can not do hand sewing because of medical reasons. I will try to find a tute on my method.

Rainbow 02-01-2011 05:01 AM

My avatar is done by QAYG....with NO hand work...must be THAT TEACHER'S method....Don't give up on QAYG quilting. It is so liberating.

Mattee 02-01-2011 05:13 AM

The QAYG class I did used bias tape, but no hand-sewing. We used a decorative stitch, or just straight stitch, to attach it with the machine.

Not necessarily. I made a QAYG where I stitched the blocks together on the back and finished the edges on the top with a decorative stitch. I used it to make a 'pool quilt' many years ago, and it has endured lots of vacations and machine washings and in none the worse for wear. I have slaso made one like you are describing and it didn't hold up nearly as well.

There is more than one way to do QAYG. I started with the "Fun and Done" pattern and it is all done by machine. The pattern I have is by Prairie Sky Quilting and the pattern name is "Easy Diamonds Quilt. When you sew the blocks together, and then finish the seam on the front of the quilt top, it creates the sashings between the blocks.

ruthrec 02-01-2011 05:58 AM

I have just started a QAYG king size. Will let you know how it goes. So far so good. All the blocks are cut, layered, and some quilted. I refuse to hand quilt except sometimes for binding. I'm coming up with all kinds of ideas on how to put it all together. Will keep you posted.

Annette Searcy 02-01-2011 06:06 AM

I have arthritis in my hands. My fingers are a mess. Can't do hand work. So everything has to be machine stitched. Don''t know why I haven't done it years before--its faster and looks just as good if not better

I've seen one, too. You might have to hunt a little, but it will save you the time of hand sewing.

Linda Loo 02-01-2011 06:10 AM

There are soooooo many ways to do QAYG! I do the most simple method I could find. I make strips of blocks (or just strips)in widths from 6 to 9 even 10 inches wide. Quilt each strip as it is added. There is NO hand sewing required. Backing, batting and top all go on together. I've sort of made up my own "variations on a theme" with this basic method. You Tube has many, many good tutorials! You can choose the one that you like!!!

nickylsf 02-01-2011 06:27 AM

Check out www.crazyshortcutquilts.com. I used Marguerita McManus' method on my Hawaiian Shirts Recycled quilt (see avatar) and it can be adapted to any QAYG project. This method adds sashing front and back in a very clever way. She has some videos and also a book. I am going to use it again for my current WIP tee shirt quilt. no hand sewing whatsoever!

MS quilter 02-01-2011 06:33 AM

Wow! Absolutely easy! Wish I had known this years ago!

I use this all the time and it really works....www.baysidequilting.com has a demo and supplies

Butterflyblue 02-01-2011 06:53 AM

I have done QAYG entirely by machine. It is not quite as pretty as hand whip stitching, but its not bad. I've also heard you can use the blind hem stitch on you machine instead of hand whip stitching, but I've never heard exactly how and haven't taken the time to figure it out myself.

QAYG covers a variety of techniques and if you can't find one that fits exactly what you want to do, you can modify and combine the techniques. I practice on small projects - table mats and baby quilts, even potholders, to find the ones that work best for what I want for any particular project.

Butterflyblue 02-01-2011 06:56 AM

Books I've used include Sharon Pederson's "Reversible Quilts" and Marti Mitchell's "Quilting in Sections", plus of course there is the old standby "Lap Quilting" by Georgia Bonesteel, which is geared towards hand work but could be adapted. And as a plus, it seems to be often available at libraries.

JeanDal 02-01-2011 07:06 AM

LOL! You're a mess!

I do QAYG a lot and I NEVER hand sew. I have bursitis in my shoulder and it is very painful to hand sew anything. What I do is sew one sashing on the front and one on the back of a block at the same time. Then I sew the front sashing to the next block. Then I fold over the back sashing so it is a little over the stitch line then Stitch in the Ditch from the front. Try it. I think it would work for you.
