I do the no sashing by putting the backing in two pieces, wrong side up, on the back of the two blocks or rows to be sewn together. I took a class for this years ago from the local Home Extension dept.

There is a quilter/author here in Seattle named Jera Brandvig who has 2 books on QAYG. I found her books at my library and the one titled QAYG Made Vintage has 3 different methods of doing QAYG. One is block to block with no sashing, one uses sashing on the front only and the 3rd uses sashing on front and back. I have don the sashing on front and back but not the other two. I did buy the Vintage quilt book as it has 51 block patterns, 9 quilt patterns and the joining methods. So I've read the posts several times, watched lots of videos and I've noticed most of the blocks that are being joined are simple blocks...not a lot of sections being joined at the sides which creates bulk (on a good day)...think pinwheels.

So when we sew our quilt blocks, we leave a quarter inch seam allowance around the block for assembly BUT videos say to leave half an inch unquilted. I'm getting confused...after joining blocks have to go back and do more quilting? and what about the pinwheel bulk? Hard to trim it.

Do I have to add a strip around eaah block so I don't loose my points?

Nope.... it's not too difficult to protect those points. And in the grand scheme of things a few missing points "hide"....

My quilts (Vortex and Happy Trails) were both done QAYG...

Patrice, you weren't kidding about lots and lots and lots of pins. Luckily I do have lots and lots and lots of pins....lol.
