Question about applique.

I saw Elaine's HST quilted by Charisma and I wondered how the black outlining got around the flowers and leaves on the outside border. I understood it was done by hand not machine. I like the way it looks.

here is a link to the thread http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...a-t191786.html
i never noticed the black outlining, but it sure is a nice look. perhaps it is a narrow zig zag applying the applique by machine?

It look like to me that it is a simple outline stitch done very close together and holds down the edges instead of needle turn applique. JMO. :)

DogHouseMom 06-16-2012 04:15 AM

Yup. Looks like machine satin stitch. Nicely done.

dakotamaid 06-16-2012 04:32 AM

Can it be machine satin stitched if the whole quilt was hand made? JMO. :)

"She hand pieced the whole thing from HST's to the Needle turn applique. Pretty amazing..it's all PERFECT!"

I thought it might be a really good hand embroidered stem stitch used to sew the appliques in place. Kind of like Red Work but with a fabric shape in the inside of the outline?

"I thought it might be a really good hand embroidered stem stitch used to sew the appliques in place." That's what I think. Stem stitch. Good Idea that I just might do

I enlarged it to 200% because I was interested in the outline also. It looked to be a satin stitch outline.

Since Charisma had the quilt in hand why don't you private message her and ask her?

This does not eliminate the possibility of machine satin stitching over the needle turn applique.

how about a pm to Elaine? you may have to contact Chrisma to get Elain's screen name

sinceresissy 06-17-2012 04:43 AM

Well, thanks for all the suggestions. I thought I replied earlier but don't see the reply. Will try giving Charisma a pm and let you know what I find out.

Hi Sissy,
Isn't that Fabulous? That was the first time I had ever seen that as well. ..Elaine had needle turn appliqued all those vines and leaves...then she took a navy blue embroidery thread and embroidered around each applique to give it some depth.....I thought it added alot.

Thanks so much...I appreciate your kindness.
have a blessed day!
Charisma

That was my reply from Charisma. I think that is amazing.
