I have put the batting in the dryer on lowest temperature setting for a few minutes with a dryer sheet and damp wash cloth. It makes it relax.. Hope this helps

Good question, thanks for asking. Have to try the dryer method. Usually try to lay out for a day or so, but with a small space have to keep moving it. BrendaK

Well, I wasn't patient enough to wait, and I'm glad I went ahead because it went fine and now I'm quilting today! : )
I ended up lightly spritzing it (cotton) with water, then put it in the dryer on low for just a few minutes. Came out great! |
i lay mine out for a day or toss in the dryer for a bit
I put mine in the dryer for 10-15 minutes with a couple of damp kitchen or hand towels. They're very easy to spread out and smooth and all the hard wrinkles are gone. :)
Throw it in the dryer for a few minutes and it will relax just great. Isn't this the same as the other topic?

What do you hang it on? |
I put mine in the dryer on low to fluff it and smooth out the wrinkles :-D :-D :-D
I toss my into the dryer on low for just a few minutes and then it is ready to go!
Hello fellow Mainer, I also put mine in the dryer for a bit to relax any creases.
Annie :) |
Remember that the edge of cut batting will shrink back into itself!
SO when you cut batting, cut it an inch or more larger than the edge line you want, to allow for that shrinkage. |
I put it in the dryer with a load of clothes. After 10 mins. pull out and stretch it out over backing and smooth as I pin/
if I'm using pre-packaged batting I open it up and put it over the bathtub curtain rail for a day
This reminds me of a question I have meant to ask -- I read that Warm 'n Natural should be washed before using. . .but this doesn't sound right to me. Anyone have experience with this?

Then it listed directions for optional pre-use washing instructions. |
Thanks. It was in a quilt book that listed all kinds of batting that I saw the notation. Do other quilters order their batting from specialty sites rather than using the generic stuff a fabric store would carry? I am batting-knowledge-ignorant.

I made the mistake once of leaving batting out overnight to relax the creases. It was so full of cat fur (hmm...wonder how that happened? No one knew a thing!) by morning that I had to throw it away and use another. Now I just toss in the dryer w/ a damp washcloth for a few minutes. Between that and being careful when smoothing out when I spray baste, I haven't had any more problems.
My batting is on a big roll, so I just unroll what I need and cut, then proceed on.
I put my batting in the dryer with a moist towel for 5 minutes or so and it comes out fluffy and ready to use.
Suggestion when you start to bind your quilt go open your package of batting. If it's a day or two that's great it's easier to work with.
great information here - I have washed & dryed cotten batting before but don't think I have ever let it relax before. I am going to have to give this a try and see if I can tell a difference.
I always fluff mine in the dryer. Works great & you don't have to wait
I RELAX MINE IN THE DRIER. NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT USING A BALL OR SPRITZING. WILL TRY THAT METHOD
I didn't know about relaxing the batting before use but it makes sense. Good to read all the answers, all good ideas to use from now on. Thanks.

I will keep an eye on this question, and maybe I will change my bad habit. |
I let mine lay on the bed like a spread for a day...But I do like all the posts about putting it in the dryer...and also buying by the roll.
I hardly ever use packaged batting but the few times I did, I just threw it in the dryer on low for a few minutes and it worked just fine.
I haven't noticed that big a difference either way. So I don't deliberately do it. I just take it out of the package and lay it over my backing and smooth, smooth, smooth it out with my hands and this seems to work just fine for me.
Let it set out of bag but buy most on roll
