Do you all leave your batting laid out flat for a day or so before use to relax the creases? Or do you use it straight out of the package? And is there a noticable difference either way? Thanks!

the casual quilter 07-07-2011 04:47 PM

I do let it relax if I use packaged batting. The batting doesn't get absulutely flat, but the folds do get less pronounced. Our climate here is pretty dry, so if I'm in a hurry, I throw the batt into the dryer on the fluff setting for a few minutes.

spartan quilter 07-07-2011 04:48 PM

I wish that I would think to lay mine out, because I would guess that it would lay better, when I am sandwiching it. I just use it straight from the bag, and pin like crazy. It helps if I have someone to help stretch it, also.

I will keep an eye on this question, and maybe I will change my bad habit.

Kristin in ME 07-07-2011 04:51 PM

I hadn't thought to take it out ahead of time and now I'm sitting here, all ready to layer it! I am so impatient... but I don't want to mess up this quilt that I've worked so hard on!

luckylindy333 07-07-2011 04:59 PM

I was taught to hang up your batting before you quilt by at least a day, but I don't always remember to do it. I think I will get one out when I go home tonight, now that you mention it!

Glassquilt 07-07-2011 05:04 PM

I let it relax

PMY in QCA-IL 07-07-2011 05:06 PM

If I think about it soon enough I like to lay the batting out flat on our guest room bed. I don't always think that far in advance, so do give it a toss in the dryer on low or air setting for a couple of minutes and that usually relaxes it enough. Cotton may need a spritz of water before going in the dryer to make it behave.

yellowsnow55 07-07-2011 05:06 PM

I hang mine outside overnight in the cold night air. Also works well for wool suits etc.

alikat110 07-07-2011 05:21 PM

Great info

emerald46 07-07-2011 05:32 PM

I lay the batting out over my large dining room table the day before I use.

I usually forget to lay it out so I just throw it in the dryer for a few minutes. I use the dryer balls so it knocks it around and keeps it from bunching up too much. Has always worked fine for me.

katier825 07-07-2011 05:48 PM

I spritz mine with water and put it in the dryer on low for 10 minutes or so. Usually most of the wrinkles come out without having to iron it.

Cybrarian 07-07-2011 05:56 PM

I use a light spraying of Wrinkle Release (eternal homage to the inventor of this glorious product-hey I have 2 adult sons that go out in the world always looking presentable because of this stuff!) and put it on guest bed or pop in the dryer for a few minutes. Makes life easier!

mcdaniel023 07-07-2011 06:10 PM

I have a system to remember to get it out. Before sewing on the border I get the batting out of the package and lay it out. I usually let it sit out for at least a day.

SharBear 07-07-2011 06:16 PM

ditto!

susie-susie-susie 07-07-2011 06:17 PM

I let mine sit at least overnight if I buy the packaged batting. I'm afraid to put it into the dryer, but sometimes I iron it. Don't want those wrinkles inside my quilt!!

I too use the wrinkle release and put it in the dryer for 10 minutes or so. Works very well.

jaciqltznok 07-07-2011 07:40 PM

I hang it...for two days...works really well whether you are machine or FQM or hand quilting it..really pulls the creases out!

C.quilts 07-08-2011 03:42 AM

I throw it in the dryer on a low heat setting with a damp scrap piece of batting.

jitkaau 07-08-2011 03:54 AM

I generally buy the metres off an enormous roll.

Iamquilter 07-08-2011 04:32 AM

I will put mine in the dryer for a few minutes to get all the wrinkles out.

grumpy90650 07-08-2011 05:00 AM

i always lay out the batting to let it 'rest'...helps in layering the quilt...

sewmom 07-08-2011 05:07 AM

I use a steam iron and hover over the batting. It works really well to relax it. I'm thinking that a small hand steamer would work equally well for the really large sizes. I also think it should then air dry before sandwiching.

Deborah12687 07-08-2011 05:10 AM

I hang my batting on the clothes line and spritz it with water and let hang for a while in the sun till the creases relax.

mimiof3 07-08-2011 05:17 AM

I was told by my LAQ to take it out of the package and let it rest a day.

mar32428 07-08-2011 05:47 AM

This is why I only buy batting by the roll.

vickig626 07-08-2011 05:47 AM

I haven't bought batting in package. I always buy off the rolled bolt and keep it that way. I keep an empty cardboard roller handy from a previous purchase. I only buy my batting when it's on sale at Joann's and usually buy 4-5 yards at a time. Doing this, no need to let it relax.

crazyquilter56 07-08-2011 05:53 AM

I use warm and natural and I throw it in a hot dryer for about 10 min and it comes out fine.......

Victoria L 07-08-2011 05:57 AM

I let mine set out for at least a day. The sandwiching process is easier then.

Gramily 07-08-2011 06:08 AM

I lightly steam press mine. perfect.

pstrwife 07-08-2011 06:23 AM

I try to leave it out, but I like the dryer idea too. I'll try that next time. thanks

Jingle 07-08-2011 07:11 AM

I have tried it and doesn't seem to help. I go ahead and use it out of the package, after quilt is quilted, washed and dried, It looks good to me and can't tell how wrinkly the batting started out .

My batting is on a rol and I only have the seam to contend with so I will lay it out but only for a few hours. Depending on the weather it will lay down.

I always throw the batting in the dryer for about 5 minutes. Takes out most, if not all of the wrinkles. (cotton)

juliea9967 07-08-2011 08:20 AM

Me, too. And it does make it easier to sandwich.

I've tossed mine in the dryer with a damp towel but normally, I just hang it over the railing for a day.

I never thought of using the balls to help. It does make life easier if it is flatter.

janell2009 07-08-2011 08:39 AM

I try and get it out when I buy it by the bag.....I now buy it on the roll, but I still lay it out to straighten it and measure it for sure and it always seems to need some adjusting
