I have the opportunity to go look at 3 full rooms of quilting supplies. The gentleman's wife and mother were both quilters before passing away and he is "GIVING EVERYTHING TO ME FREE!!". I know cotton is always good, but what other fabrics are good for quilting. He told me I could take as much as I wanted before he dontated the reminder to goodwill or salvation army...I am so exicted!! He said there was enough stuff to take up 2 cars!! So my sisters and I are taking both vehicles and going to load up!!
Take it all, and then sell what you don't want. After you cover expenses of selling, donate the profit to a charity of his choice...
Sounds like you've hit the jackpot! :) |
Whoa! I would probably take poly cotton blends also, if you can tell which they are.
Be careful to not burden yourself with stuff you'll never use, just because it is there -- no one needs more guilt than they already carry! |
OMG that's so exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARe you in the car yet??? LOL
Be sure to show us all the loot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Maybe as a favor to him, you could find a group that makes charity quilts and bring the remainder of the fabric that you don't want directly to the group. He would probably be happy to know that the remainder of the fabric/supplies went to help soldiers or children and the fact that he didn't need to take it anywhere.
I would take the better quality cottons and let the rest be donated. That is a lot of fabric to store just because it's free.

Jackpot indeed!
Wow, what a blessing
Would he enjoy having a quilt made from some of it, in memory of his wife and mother? I think I'd do that as a "thank you".
Yep I usually take my fabric that people give me and I really don't want to the Senior Center. Those ladies have taught me alot
I agree take it all but tell him u will be giving some to quilting groups. I would also make him a quilt as thank you! Can't wait to see!
Gosh you did hit the jack pot.
What a blessing!
Take what you need and will use, and let him donate to his favorite charity. |
My kind of jackpot!
I agree take it all and then donate the unwanted fabs.
You are very lucky! |
Lucky You!
He will probably be most grateful for you to take everything ... as then he has to figure out what to do with the rest. Suggest to him that you'll do that for him, as part of the payment of his giving it to you. Especially if his plans are to give it away anyway, it's not like he's missing out on the sale value. This way, you can get it out of there, and then take your time to sort thru it with your sisters, and determine how/where to share the bounty that you are not wanting for yourselves. |
Wow!
Wow, that is really nice of him. I would make him a quilt as well. Perhaps you and your sister could work on one together for him.

ohhhhhhhhhhhh myyyyyyyyyy! I'd be going nuts waiting to get inside. Have fun. |
Wow what a great deal!! as one suggested maybe you could ask if he would like some type of memory quilt done for him.. wouldn't that be wonderful for him.... I would have to take it all & then make sure he knows where you donated some to in their name of course.... it would probably make it easier for him that way so he didn't have to deal with it.....Great deal... you know we are all glad for you but green with envy!!!!
Wow, have fun and so happy for you
Take all the good quality cotton of course. Stretch the "cotton" definition and get a few to do the clothesline baskets with. See if there are flannels for all flannel quilts. (chenille and rag style) What about fabric for pillowcases? They don't have to be all cotton. Shopping bag fabric in something like cotton duct? Fleece for scarves for winter and the tied blankets. Don't forget about rotary cutters and blades, good scissors and rulers. What about thread? Sounds like a jackpot to me! Congratulations and post your photos.
P.S. make sure you wash everything in case you have guests. |

(sorry for the blank screen!)
How lucky!
I agree with making a quilt for him with some of the fabric. A small way to thank the generous donor and a wonderful memory back to him!
Wow. that is the ultimate jackpot! How kind of him!
What a wonderful man to give it all to you. Do you see a quilt in his future.. What a nice way to say thank you. If he does not like quilts, how about donating a quilt in his, his wife, and her mother's name?

what a blessing you have. use it well and donate anything you can't use, I am sure he would like that, |
Wow! What a jack-pot!
If it were me, I'd take the whole lot and, once home, take my time going through it all. When decided what to keep, donate the rest to a quilting club. Do this poor man a favor and help him to clean out by taking it all off his hands. Let him know what you plan to do with what you don't keep. It'll give him some peace of mind knowing his loved ones source of joy is being passed on to do more good.

You are soooo lucky. DEB

That's very generous of him to do that for you. He's probably overwhelmed with "stuff" and be glad that you are helping him get rid of some of it. Been there. Still have some of my MIL's possessions that we don't know what to do with. Some is just clutter to me but my husband thinks some it has some monetary value...after of course we sorted for keepsakes and special memory things.
Take meee! I could be in Charleston in,,,um, 3 days if I hurry! Wait up, K?
Take it all...then have fun sorting
Exciting!
take it all, then what you will not use you can either donate or sell, then if sold donate to the ladies who have gone favorite's charity, ask schools, ask womens shelters, ask ask ask, the fabric was given to you, it is yours to do as you please, but if someone could benefit for what you do not want or will not use, well, it is good for the community and good karma
just my opinion, jan in florida |
