Question on tying a quilt

I am making a t-shirt quilt for my husband for Christmas. I have the top finished and have it sandwiched. I'm ready to start tying.

Is there a reason I should use embroidery thread and not yarn? Or is it a personal choice. I really like the look of yarn. But seems eveything I read indicates using embroidery thread.

Please advise.

Depending on the type of yarn used, some yarns (poly) turns into little balls from repeated washing and drying.

Years and years ago, when I knew nothing about quilting I tied a quilt with yarn. It still holds together! I did double knot it. I used nice acrylic yarn. The yarn fuzzed abit, but it still looks pretty good.

I like to use crochet thread...lotsa colors, sturdy, not hard to pull through layers of sandwich.

Yarn makes big holes. I prefer pearl cotton that #5

I like Knitcrosheen or pearl cotton because of the finer texture, but Yarn or embroidery floss all seem to hold up. Go with what you like. JMHO!

I only tie comforters and always used crochet thread. Hold up very nicely.
