Hi everyone,
Thanks for the responses! I really appreciate it! Well, I've tried to make my first potholders... Same material, 2 different styles. I really need to keep on practicing, LOL. These are done with the other batting I bought, the flame retardent one. I'm going to find the Insul-Bright and try that, and get the old towels out the closet and try that. I guess I can't attach pics... |
I used 2 layers of batting for my potholders. The one comment I kept getting was....these are too pretty to use. I did tell the people that they are better suited for holding pot handles ON TOP of the stove and not oven things. The one lady that did buy them said she was going to hang them in her kitchen and NOT use them. Told her that would would too! lol

I'm going to try old towel as my second layer instead of cotton batting. Saving the cotton batting for quilts. :D
|
I used wool - old felted blankets and sweaters. Recycle, save a sheep.
|
using felted wool is also a good idea.

My mother-in-law makes potholders and she said that she always uses old towels.
I'm planning on making them for Christmas. Thanks for all the information. |
Thanks for a great tute! I made one with some thermal stuff and it gets to hot to handle - going to try the towel idea! And I just gave a huge garbage bag of towels to Goodwill!!! They weren't even that old - just had too many!! Boo Hoo.

hi I make potholders for me and my friends and use old sweatshirts as the inside so far I haven't burned myself or my table just my small effort at recycling. Sandie in IN.
|
I use insul-bright. I purchased it from jhittlesewing.com, it used to be the cheapest there, but that has been a year ago. When I made mine, I put 1 layer of insul-bright, then 1 layer of batting, but if you use them a lot, I'd use 2 layers of insul-bright.

I use one layer of W&N and one layer of Insulbright. You don't want to heavily quilt them otherwise the heat will slip thru the holes made by the sewing machine needle.
