Quick binding tool

I have been struggling everytime I have tofinish the binding on my quilt. I get it all sewed until I have to put the ends together which I want to finish with the seam sewn diagonally. Well I bought the quick binding tool awhile ago and never could figure it out until last night. the last three days I have been ripping my end trying to sew them right. A light went on last night when I finally thought to google binding tools and found a video from Missouri quilting. I had to watch it several times and even brought my quilt down and sat and did it together. Well it worked!! I'm so excited. It actually took only a few minutes once my brain registered how to do it. Do others have this problem. If so check out the tool and website. I'm not sure how to attach a link or I would.

I'm glad it works for you, I need to look into it. Now you got me curious and I will check it out!

dmarcho 11-11-2011 04:36 AM

My answer to every question is "Have you googled it". I have found the videos from the Missouri Star quilt shop/show very helpful. I am happy for you. It feels so good when a plan comes together, no matter how long it takes.

MaryAnnMc 11-11-2011 05:16 AM

How did we ever learn anything before Google??

I love my binding tool........I also watched the Missouri Star video with my quilt in front of me.....just paused each step and finished joining the binding.

I seem to have a problem with my brain and that tool. Every single time I use it, ( I swear ) I sew it together wrong and it is twisted. I'm starting to not use it and sew them straight. I get so frustrated. I have watched the video, but need to watch it again. By the time I'm doing the binding...I just want to finish

Shirls4sons 11-11-2011 06:14 AM

I didn't know there was a binding "tool"! I will have to check this out also, as I hate finishing a binding. Yes, I am the same way.....sometimes it takes be a little while to wrap my brain around something, but then it is like a light bulb turning on. Good thread. I want one of those tools.

Chicca 11-11-2011 06:35 AM

The binding tool is at the top of my list. I have watched the videos and read what others have said; it really seams to save time. You are not alone in that it sometimes takes quite awhile for things to click in my brain waves also.

quiltaroni 11-11-2011 06:36 AM

Bering able to google things is a great frustration saver.

luvstoquilt 11-11-2011 07:11 AM

Oh Google, how we all love you! I watched and now I want a binding tool!

DebraK 11-11-2011 07:21 AM

A picture is worth a thousand words. I don't use a tool, but one day I saw just the right picture and I've not had a problem since. I keep the picture on my desktop should I forget.

puck116 11-11-2011 07:28 AM

I have the same tool and I like it also, but I found that because I don't do binding on a regular basis, I would have to watch the video each time. Then it dawned on me to write up a cheat sheet in my own words, that I would understand each time I use the tool. That did the trick for me.

neece 11-11-2011 07:29 AM

I will check that out. I have a binding tool that has sat waiting to be used, finally an answer

joyce888 11-11-2011 07:32 AM

I too struggled until I finally made myself a sample from the instructions in the book by JoAnn's "Your Guide to Quilting" page 258. I left the sample binding loose and I can look at the joining of the two ends and get it right the first time.

I am so glad to know I am not alone. I ended up taking photos of the correct set up on my cell phone and refer back to it when I am doing binding. It is funny, I always thought I was alone in being confused about it - and I think it is largely because I go such long stretches in between finishing quilts. Whew, I am glad to know I am among friends! :)

I have learned a lot watching videos on UTube. I affectionately refer to it as "UTube University".

QuiltnNan 11-11-2011 09:19 AM

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm with the others - cannot live without Google!!!

crafty pat 11-11-2011 09:23 AM

I bought the one from Fon's and Porter but have not used it yet.

Holice 11-11-2011 11:32 AM

have you watched my video on www.quilterstv.com on binding. You don't need a tool.

I did too, and thought I'd pull my hair out getting it done without twisting. Sure enough, I Googled it and found that one little piece of info had been left out. If you want I'll try to find the site that gave me the correct information.

Google makes me look intellegent I love google..................... hey I see a t-shirt in the making.

I had a problem with the tool also. I was not using the tool correctly. I, too, watched the video. Now that I am using the tool correctly, I love it! Until I got the tool, I had so much trouble joining the binding. I can remember ripping out the binding joint four times before I got it right on one quilt. I never bound a quilt without having to rip at least once. Now, I have a perfect join every time thanks to the Missouri Star Quilt video.

I could never get my head around which way to flip the ends to finish off the binding (I always ended up with a twist) until I got the Fons and Porter binding tool. I just followed the instructions and never messed up a single one. It looks so easy now, but I still use it every time. Here is one place to get one and you can see what one looks like (Joann's also has them and you can use a coupon):

Sharon Shamber has a great method. She uses glue and it works great!

ka9sdn 11-11-2011 01:12 PM

Guess I need the tool. I have printed out how to's and have them right in front of me and still cannot get the binding ends right.

kathy6696 11-11-2011 02:15 PM

I have the binding tool also, it does work very well but I always forget how to use it, so I have to watch the video every time.

Thanks for good info!

Retired GI Jo 11-11-2011 03:55 PM

I have used the binding tool on the last 2 quilts I've made. One, I twisted it and sewed it wrong twice! before I got it right. The directions were great--my following them correctly was not. LOL. Also, Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville has great binding directions. Like others on here have said, I do them so seldom, I have to re-learn all over every time!

I'm glad that this thread got started. I have looked at the tool several times and wasn't sure if it was worth getting. Now I want one--darn just drove into the quilt store today.

Dolphyngyrl 11-11-2011 05:13 PM

Mee too, finally saw on youtube how to use the darn thing a month ago wish I had know that a while back

miholmes 11-11-2011 05:40 PM

I have this tool and LOVE it!

JUNEC 11-11-2011 05:45 PM

Thank you for the info - I like to use bing.com for searches - www.bing.com - I find things easier on this search engine than on goggle

Don't give up...once you learn how to use it you will love it...I took scraps and sat in front of my tv until I got it right...I can't tell you how many times I have ripped the seam apart but in the end I finally got it...

nhweaver 11-12-2011 03:36 AM

Thank you for the information on MIssouri you tube quilting. I just bookmarked it as a favorite. Later on I will watch (with audio, rest of house is sleeping) it. Just getting into U Tube for quilting hints. Love it!!

BMP 11-12-2011 03:41 AM

I bought one hoping to make things easier but somehow mine never turned out right always too large / long !!

Grammie Sharon 11-12-2011 03:52 AM

Thanks for all your encouragement. BMP mine turned out too long too but then when you look at the video again that was where they had made an error originally. the correction to the placement of the tool really makes a difference. Now if it wasn't so far inbetween binding quilts I might remember how to do it. Guess I better get busy sewing. Thanks all.

lindagor 11-12-2011 04:20 AM

I just bought a tool at the Houston Quilt Festival. I haven't tried it yet, but hope I have success like you did.

jitkaau 11-12-2011 04:24 AM

The instructions are written on the newer version of the tool, so it should not be a problem. You measure from the point on one side and from the mark at the beginning of the slant on the other side. Always keep the same side facing you and don't make the mistake of flipping it.

tutslady 11-12-2011 04:51 AM

I have one and it sure makes it a lot easier then the old way. Works like a champ.

Audrey 11-12-2011 05:43 AM

I struggle with this at times also. Sometimes I can do it, than other times I struggle with it. I'll have two watch the video again.
