rexie 11-23-2010 05:51 PM

Trip Around the World. Is that patchwork?

AnnaK 11-23-2010 05:56 PM

When she said not patchwork does she mean she doesn't want anything quilted? Ouch.

Flying_V_Goddess 11-23-2010 05:56 PM

Pinwheels. Missouri Star Quilts has a tutorial on YouTube on how to do them super fast with squares or charm packs.

That would be my question? I know a number of people who refer to anything quilted as patchwork.

stewyscrewy 11-23-2010 06:00 PM

log cabin is actualy fast to piece.

maine ladybug 11-23-2010 06:17 PM

What if you started with a center medallion and then did different rows around it until it was the correct size?

I just finished a Warm Wishes, using a large print as the focal fabric. It went together really quickly. EAch of my blocks was ten inches square.

See....

(The quilt inspector weighs 16 pounds, so he makes the quilt look smaller than it is.)

deema 11-23-2010 06:39 PM

I'm curious too, what she means by "patch work"...?

that looks like it would be pretty with a floral center square - quick too!

I wouldn't think so. I asked her if she had any quilts or if she needed any. She said that her mom had made her some and they were embroidered and that she didn't like patch work. I don't think it will be quilted it will be tied! I have never quilted anything and I'm not going to learn between now and Jan 9th!!

Momof3Es 11-23-2010 06:43 PM

I'm thinking strips. Jelly rolls. they are already cut and I wouldn't have to cut it! She likes purple and silver! I think maybe a hint of black would be cool make the silver really pop!!

irishrose 11-23-2010 06:50 PM

I'm guessing by no patchwork, she meant no scrappy and maybe no calicos. A color controlled pattern may be more to her liking. The purple, silver and black sounds like a winner.

How about cutting those colors into 2 1/2 inch strips and chopping them into 14 to 21 pieces. Then sew them together in a staggered fashion with the colors in a random order.

quiltforfun 11-23-2010 06:59 PM

How about a 3 fabric tossed 9-patch. Solid light for the center and coordinating fabrics/colors for the other 2.
I use this pattern a lot when making baby quilts for my grands.

By her not wanting a patchwork quilt, I'm not sure I would make her a quilt at all, unless you can find out exactly what she would consider to NOT be patchwork. I would take it to mean she would want a whole cloth quilt.

nana katie 11-23-2010 07:16 PM

What about the 10 minute squares? That should be really quick and easy.

tjradj 11-23-2010 07:57 PM

What about a quilt as you go quilt?
Sandwich your backing and batting.
Draw a line to show the center top to bottom and side to side.
Start with a strip of fabric the full length top to bottom and place it along the center top to bottom line.
Place the next strip face down on the first and sew one side with a 1/4" seam. Flip the top strip over and press.
Add the next strip face down on strip #2 and stitch it down, and flip.
Once you get one side down, turn the quilt so that the finished side is on the left.
Start adding strips from the center out again.
The best part is, when you're done, it's quilted too.
Just add a border if you want, and bind by machine.
Easy as pie.

VernaL 11-23-2010 08:18 PM

I think before you put out a lot of effort, you should find out what she wants. To me patchwork means no pieces. Maybe she has seen some scrap quilts and doesn't want anything with lots of little pieces. I think you should ask her. Maybe she would rather have placemats or an apron, etc.

Exactly !after re-reading this i am not sure i would spend the time or money, I refuse to make quilts for "fussies" That is me though. I am getting grouchy with age lol.

peacebypiece 11-23-2010 09:00 PM

Think about the recipient of the gift. What does she like? There are people who really don't like quilts/patchwork. It might not look good with her decorating style. It was probably very difficult for her to request "no patchwork" knowing that you love to make quilts.
How about a gift card for her favorite store or restaurant. I would not even think of making a double bed size quilt for someone who didn't indicate clearly that she wants one. I have even let the other person pick out the pattern & colors.
Last fall I made a queen size quilt for a friend who loves things historical, handmade, folk-art style and decorates her home beautifully with her heritage items, but she does not sew. I made the quilt from the pattern she chose in the colors she chose. She loves it. Her chosen craft is making rugs from strips of fabic crocheted, so I gave her a huge box of 1" strips of fabric in colors she was looking for.

Momof3Es 11-23-2010 09:07 PM

This is exactly what she said! I c&p from my chat with her on fb....I like the quilts that have designs on/in them you know not just patchwork - I have a couple that mom made with needlepoint.

bargello style?
Limited colors will reduce the "patchiness".
Think about what she wears. Would batiks suit her?

Okay, it sounds like she's telling you she doesn't like fabric piecing. She seems to be thinking of things like the embroidered tablecloths and dresser scarves we now see in antique stores. It appears he wants handwork with thread, not fabrics cut up and sewn back together. To her "needlepoint" probably is embroidery.

For your own heart, please ask her to be very specific so you are not hurt when she doesn't seem to appreciate what you give her. I can't imagine a worse feeling on the part of both of you! Maybe send her some pictures from the internet with various ideas of what you could make and get her feedback.

fleurdelisquilts.com 11-23-2010 10:49 PM

I agree with Jan. It will be hard enough to get it all done by the due date. If she doesn't love it, you will be so disappointed. I like the idea of sending her some pics and letting her figure out what she likes/dislikes. Patchwork can mean so many things. Have you visited her enough to know her decor and tastes? If not, how can you figure out what she wants? Especially since she obviously expects something she has in her mind. She likely has no idea that such a simple phrase could throw a dozen quilters into a tizzy of a discussion.

How about a nice center panel and several color borders around it. It's quick, no piecing involved, you can use a purchased panel or a piece of beautiful material.

The center of this quilt is a panel, the borders are a coordinating fabric. There is some piecing (the brown squares in the last border) because I ran out of fabric but you could do one solid piece.

Edie 11-24-2010 02:15 AM

How about a Chinese Coin? Edie

americassewplace 11-24-2010 05:14 AM

I don't know how to paste an attachment on here. But if you search on Super Fast jelly roll quilt there is a Tutorial for one. And it is Super Fast and easy. Then stitch in the ditch or 1/4" from the seans to quilt. I just made one and it was fast and easy.

That is what I would understand. Does she want a comforter?

10 minute blocks are easy and very dramatic. here is the tut. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbTHlGGKMPM&NR=1

I used 9" squares and it made for a huge block, will go 6" next time I do this pattern.

Yarn or Fabric 11-24-2010 05:38 AM

She sounds a lot like me when I was younger. I had hated quilts because all the ones I saw were old fashioned and country and whatnot.

I would stick with something modern looking. Maybe send her the link to fabric.com or some place and tell her to pick out a few different types of material that she would like so that you can get an idea of what kind of prints she likes and take it from there... make sure she knows you might not get that exact one that it's more for you to get a feel for her style.

Then maybe make a snowball quilt or something else that will showcase the material and go for it.

Ok what is a snowball quilt?? One of her cats names is Snoball!! The reason I decided that this is the year of the quilts (between now and xmas next year) is that this woman loves shoes! And I saw this really awesome shoe fabric. I was thinking of making her something for her birthday but when I got her name for xmas I feel as tho it was fate decided for me!!? Am I crazy or does this make sense to someone else??

Yarn or Fabric 11-24-2010 06:08 AM

http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2009/08...all-block.html

It is a quick block and it really showcases the material :)
I am going to do it for my oldest son's quilt... but in outer space material :)

That one is on my to do list as well.
Yours looks wonderful!!

pasovasz 11-24-2010 08:02 AM

Before you make any type of quilt- ASK her what she wants.

I agree with the others who said- don't invest so much of yourself only to have BOTH of you be so disappointed.

what does "not patchwork" mean. The only others left are applique and wholecloth. There may be others but can't think of them now.
Better to get specifics on what she means.

mommamac 11-24-2010 08:21 AM

My thought would be to give her a gift certificate for a quilt shop trip. She can visually see finished quilts & look at books & fabrics. Hopefully something will say "this is it".

Meanwhile - make her a tablerunner, coasters or potholders with the shoe fabric & attach the gift cert. so she'll have a concrete gift for Christmas.

When is her b-day - maybe you can set that as a finish date.

Ok. I talked to my mother in law and I asked her about it.(my SIL lives with in laws) so she would know! She said that she means scrappy! That's so cool!! I don't much care for scrappy myself, maybe it's because I don't have much for a stash! So now my windows are re open!! Yeah!! I am thinking strips or those 10 inch square things (can't think of what they are called right now) I saw some cool patterns using those! Thank you all so much for the help!!! I just love this board, everyone is so nice and so helpful!!!
