Quick yet impressive looking quilt pattern?

My sister and my niece both announced that they are getting married in October. I have to whip up 2 quilts asap!

Does anyone have a suggestion on a quick but impressive looking quilt? I'd like them to be full sized, no bigger than queen...

I hope someone has a suggestion or two. I'm currently going through all my books and patterns on my computer to see if there is something there. My sister picked out a 2 yard piece of really pretty Hawaiian print fabric to use as focal fabric for hers. My niece is flexible except for pink or purple lol. I can work around that :D

I have the Warm Wishes pattern on my list of quilts to eventually make. Would that work for you? Good luck with having to make not one but two quilts by October. Yikes!

DebraK 09-17-2012 07:50 AM

I like this one. Very easy.

I just started on a disappearing 9 patch this morning and got a great deal done in just an hour. That is a thought.

When I need a quick quilt, I always go with Disappearing Nine Patch.

Debra - that's brilliant! I had totally forgotten about the half log cabin. I'm going to start on that one for my sister this afternoon... and looking deeper in to that site, I found the forest bricks, which will be absolutely perfect for my niece! Thanks so much! I am totally good to go :)

KLO, donac & Ranger thanks for the ideas. I'm not a fan of the d9p. I did start on a triple disappearing 9 patch that I liked better. That could be a possibility as well but I think I'm going to go for the half log cabins. I can use up a bunch of fabrics that I have on hand for that and the forest bricks. It will be good stash busting for me as well.

I'm so stoked. I'm going to pull out fabrics now and after I get back from having lunch with my son at school (birthday boy) I'm going to get cutting :D

Once again, I second the WARM WISHES suggestion. Pick one big print to frame and a second co-ordinating slightly smaller print. Pick two main colors for the frames and use a more neutral color for the center bar. The frames can be very small prints if you like.

Looks impressive but it easy and fast since the pieces are good sized.

I haven't done the half log cabin but did make 2 of the Forest Bricks quilts...both turned out great.
Have lots of fun!

Very nice patterns on that site.

To make the half log cabin go even faster I would make a larger centre square, go all the way around with your strips and cut it into 4 pieces like you would cut a D9P.
You did quick :)

Warm Wishes can look pretty impressive, yet is sooooooo quick and easy!

I love the hidden wells pattern, everyone looks so different and impressive yet they are easy to make

those are nice ones on the site given. i saved it for myself too. I do like the BQ pattern mentioned by grma33. it takes 12 inch focus squares and has strips on two sides. very nice too.

When I need a "quickie but a goodie" I always go to either "Turning 20" or "Yellow Brick Road". I can make a lap sized one in an afternoon so a larger size should be able to be done in a weekend or so. Please post pix of whatever you decide to do, OK?

Yarn or Fabric 09-18-2012 02:49 AM

I was all set to do the half log cabin for my sister and just use the fabric she picked out for the back ... until I saw this... http://www.spotlight.com.au/inspirat...-garden-quilt/ I can use the large focal print and I have a few tan materials with shells and starfish on them that I can use... and I picked out a very dark navy blender material for the "black" I'm going to start cutting and piecing today. I'm going to do the larger one for her. Her fiance is a very tall guy so the small one would like like a toddler blanket next to him lol. I'll keep track of how long it takes to make it and share pics when I'm done.

For my niece I definitely want to do the forest bricks pattern. I have a lot of leaf fabrics I had been collecting to make a leaf quilt out of leaf fabrics. I think I'll probably use those to make hers with... we'll see though. I am going to do my sister's first and then work on my niece's. I'm fortunate that I do have a little leeway with my niece's quilt. She is going to be moving back to the Jersey area this spring/early summer so we'll take a family vacation and go visit her and have a family reunion so I could hold out to make and quilt hers until I see her.... I'd rather get it done on time if at all possible. I've been notoriously bad for making things on time! I want to break that cycle.

rj.neihart 09-18-2012 03:32 AM

I made two signature quilts in case this happens. I try to keep two on hand, finished and ready just in case ..They are easy and quick....

maviskw 09-18-2012 04:24 AM

The trouble with warm wishes is: it uses only two fabrics. That probably means shopping. You want to use what you have. I really like the idea for making half log cabin blocks by starting with a larger center, putting on strips all around and then cutting it in quarters. What a wonderful idea.

MadP 09-18-2012 04:39 AM

I like the disappearing 4 patch.

Marge611 09-18-2012 04:40 AM

The http://moosestashquilting.blogspot.c...-tutorial.html is a great tutorial. Actually makes me want to try it and I'm new at this.

mrs. fitz 09-18-2012 04:57 AM

Half log cabin on the site recommended by DebraK certainly impressed me. That looks like a site worth bookmarking for future ideas. Thanks DebraK and success with whatever pattern(s) you choose Yarn Or Fabric.

sharon1 09-18-2012 05:54 AM

I even like the 10 min. block or the 5 min. block. The 10 will use the center for the focal fabric. The 5 min. block has lots of options. You said something FAST!

sharon1 09-18-2012 06:06 AM

That Amish stripes and strings goes fast and it is on Mary's site too.

PenniF 09-18-2012 06:21 AM

I've had this happen just this past year - needed 6 large lap/couch - 60 x 72- quilts in 3 months. My plan on this when it happens is to chose one truly complex quilt block - and enlarge it - make the individual squares 4 - 6 inches....
The other trick i use is the method that we all learned when water-color quilts were so popular - fuse your squares in their pattern to lightweight innerfacing - sewing is a snap. Good luck !!

JNCT14 09-18-2012 06:22 AM

Ha - when you get time and need a new pattern, try out the 5 minute block pattern by Suzanne McNeill. Fast and versatile. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...ViLmjOHuHJNbAw

Wanabee Quiltin 09-18-2012 06:33 AM

I thank everyone for all these new sites I have never visited before. I love that Mary site, have never visited it before, but she has some pretty quilts on there. Good Luck with whatever you make.

BellaBoo 09-18-2012 07:21 AM

If you want fast and very impressive you can't beat this: http://phillipsfiberart.danemcoweb.c...ngs-that-bind/ It takes a lot of fabric but it is done when you get the top sewn. No layering or quilting to do. The book has been reprinted. Be sure and watch the video demo.

linhawk 09-18-2012 07:28 AM

Debrak,
That is a great idea. http://www.maryquilts.com/half-log-cabin/
I would make super size squares with borders and cut it 1/4s.
I did that with butterfly glass with thin strips of black between colors. Started with a 7 or 71/2' square.

kydeb 09-18-2012 07:35 AM

I love the turning twenty pattern! No matter what the fabric, every time I see one, I'm pleased :)

pocoellie 09-18-2012 07:37 AM

10 minute block and then yesterday I saw a utube video on a 5 minute block by the same gal that does the 10 minute block. SUPER EASY and turns out beautiful.

But you could make it larger. Do a practice square, maybe with a 10" layercake.

1 cut vertical and 1 horizontal makes four squares.

roserips 09-18-2012 08:00 AM

There used to be a lot of posts regarding the BQ pattern, you said you had a large print. This is a great pattern for that and you could then showcase some beautiful quilting. Look for the patterns at http://www.mapleislandquilts.com
She actually has 3 different BQ patterns now.

Thanks! I just spent an hour on her site and downloaded a bunch of her patterns. I'll keep them in my 'Easy Quilts' file. Not that they are new - but she has some good basic instructions for easy quilts- especially for newbies. Now when people ask me 'How do I make a XXX?' - I can copy one of these for them.

Usually, Warm Wishes uses four fabrics (but can be done with three). There's a focus fabric, two border fabrics, and then a light fabric, for the section between the borders.

PKGranny 09-18-2012 09:06 AM

I have always liked the Take 5 quilt - by adding 12" blocks you can make it as large as you like. The pattern calls for 5 fabrics; 5/8 yard each for lap size. I have used as many as 15 different coordinating fabrics for a queen size. Can make it with or without borders.

I would find good fabrics to go with the Hawaiian focus fabric and do a Warm Wishes! Another is the rail fence in great monochromatic colors. These patterns go so quickly. Disappearing 9-patch is another on that works up fast.

DebraK 09-18-2012 10:05 AM

I like this idea. Thanks!

DebraK 09-18-2012 10:06 AM

lovely choice.

WMUTeach 09-18-2012 10:26 AM

DebraK, thank you for the beautiful idea for a quick quilt. I love the colors and can imagine it in other combinations. A good choice for this thread. I have printed out the pattern and put it in my "to do" binder.

LoisM 09-18-2012 11:17 AM

Of course we want pictures of the quilts when they're completed. :)
