Has anyone ever made a quillow? How did it turn out? Anything you would have done differently?

bluteddi 04-30-2011 12:05 PM

I've made a ton of them.... the best advice is to take a few min to plan the cuttingout of your pocket so that it lines up with the pattern on the fabric... the first few I did, I missed this part...

twinkle 04-30-2011 12:10 PM

My first quilt was a quillow and it turned out fine. The only thing I would change is I left the quillow pocket until last and ran out of some fabrics so was restricted what pattern I could do.

Airwick156 04-30-2011 12:15 PM

I made only one and if I could do it over I sure as heck wouldnt have used the forest green I used on it. But that was the only fabric that I had enough of to make one. And I used a pillow panel for the pocket. It turned out cute just don't like that green.

Wonnie 04-30-2011 12:58 PM

When you fold the quilt into the pillow does it actually look like a pillow or is it real thin?

merrylouw 04-30-2011 01:13 PM

My DD and SIL each have one (made by his mother), and they are very cute. And fairly fluffy, not flat.

twinkle 04-30-2011 01:28 PM

Mine isn't very plump, but I used cotton wadding and it's heavily quilted.

Wonnie 04-30-2011 01:32 PM

Oops...mine pattern doesn't call for quilting....just stitching 2 vertical lines equidistant from the edges....does everyone quilt theirs????

erstan947 04-30-2011 01:49 PM

I made 30 back in the 80's. I got to where I used purchased quilted fabric and a regular piece of fabric. It was a lot easier to put together. That was before I was into quilting:)

hobbykat1955 04-30-2011 01:57 PM

Only mistake I made was using flannel and not making the pillow just a bit bigger because it was a pain to stuff...also use thin batting or you'll have the same problem with cotton fabric.

Buckeye Rose 04-30-2011 02:01 PM

ok, I'll bite....what is a quillow?

I've made many for gifts and have never had any problem. I, also, was afraid it would be flat so used a poly batting of 4-6 oz. I also "spot stitch" sometimes so that the batting stays in place when washed.

It's a pocket/pouch sewn onto the back of your quilt so you can fold the quilt up inside to make a pillow.

Here is another good sample http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3Ko1...eature=related

I wish I would have used flannel for the second side. I found perfect fabric for my DGS who was into star wars at the time and used a matching star fabric for the back, but he said it feels cold to him.

I have made a few. Here is one. I change things up but always do some quilting b/c of the batting.

Great site....thank you! Love the way they matched the print to make the "pillow" disappear.

carolaug 04-30-2011 05:17 PM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSAgqWkZHcg&NR=1 - this is a great idea. This woman make the qillows for the childrens hostipal. I am really liking how these fold up into a pillow. Great for the car too...and I like how one woman uses the pocket to keep her feet warm.

I've made several and I used poly batting and tied it so the pillows were plump.

Midwestmary 04-30-2011 06:55 PM

I made four of the for my grands for Christmas 2009. I made them out of flannel with no batting - they turned out okay ... the kids loved them and still use them ;)

MadQuilter 04-30-2011 06:58 PM

I've sort of made one and it was a disaster. It was one of my first projects. NOW I KNOW that my pieces were off grain and it skewed during the pillow turn. If I hadn't used a striped fabric, I would have finished but the stripes made the misfit real obvious.

Wonnie 04-30-2011 07:31 PM

Very cute!

watterstide 05-01-2011 02:42 AM

the one i made was made out of fleece...don't have a picture of it.

mjsylvstr 05-01-2011 03:01 AM

Have only made one and it was a large one..bigggggg!

gave it to a niece for her high school graduation and she told me that she kept it with her throughout college and just loved it.

Makes it all worthwhile

mimiknoxtaylor 05-01-2011 03:28 AM

I've made several. My pattern calls for just sewing down 2 vertical lines but I've always gone ahead & quilted them. On the 1st one I did I appliqued a high heel on the pillow pocket as it was for a graduate going off to college. My grandkids love them. I just always keep in mind that they're for lots of use & not for show

twinkie 05-01-2011 03:53 AM

How "plump" the pillow is would depend on the size of the "quilt" part and the thickness of your batting. Mine plumps up real good. My daughter still uses it and it is about 12 years old. It had a folden star on the pillow part and was burgundy and gold in color.

I've made several. They do look like pillows when folded correctly.

Muriel Key 05-01-2011 04:16 AM

I have made quite a few and there is nothing I would change. Are you having a particular problem? Muriel

Wonnie 05-01-2011 04:29 AM

Not a particular problem, Muriel...it was just that I had seen various pictures of them and realized they weren't all created equal (some were real thin, some were big, some were little) so, before I tried one, wanted to see how others did theirs since fabric is so expensive to come by these days. Was, also, thinking in terms of Christmas as I like to give gifts that are practical and can be used throughout the year not just at Christmas.

MIJul 05-01-2011 04:39 AM

I've made over 200 of them. I quilted 5 straight lines so that the batting wouldn't shift (used lots of straight pins to keep the fabric from puckering). Used pillow panels (did some machine quilting on them for dimension) for the pockets on the quick ones. Made pieced squares for special pockets that were given as gifts.

Using a heavier batting will give you a fluffier pillow.

Haven't made one in years, but still get requests. They are a quick and easy gift and are usually well appreciated.

I made quillows years ago. Wouldn't it be great to put the Dahlia pattern on the pocket and make one to keep on your couch. I have to do that. Can't wait.

michlowe 05-01-2011 04:55 AM

My mom made a bunch, She used fleece and a pocket from fleece and a panel of fabric. They are lap sized. The best part is putting your feet in the pocket when the quilt is on your lap.

Now that's a good use for those beautiful folded dahlias we've all been making!

Wonnie 05-01-2011 05:12 AM

What folded Dahlia's?

EagarBeez 05-01-2011 05:58 AM

See my avitar, it's a quillo/puff. My first I bought some plain white fabric, cut both the white fabric as well as cutting other fabric I was using into 5 inch squares. Sewed them together, making a small slit in the back of each white square. Turned these blocks right side out and stuffed. Made a couple of stiches to close the slit, and joined each one by hand stitching them together. It is a long, long project. You get a beautiful quilt, but, it can be very heavy. You have to have patience to stick with it

There's a lot of them! Just do a search for folded dahlias and they'll all come up. Dungeonquilter did a great tutorial.

Wonnie 05-01-2011 06:02 AM

WOW! That was a lot of work but it's beautiful!

Wonnie 05-01-2011 06:08 AM

Thanks, Lori!

madamheather 05-01-2011 06:32 AM

I have made many quillows. I make the pillow 1/3 the size of the width I want the quillow--my quillows are the width of the fabric by 60". I have made some with warm and natural and the recipients find that they are too heavy and stiff. Poly batting is better. I quilt and piece my pieces like a regular quilt.
