I love to make quillows, but is it considered quilting if they are not pieced? I do some quilting on them but not alot because I want them to be fluffy. I guess I like instant gratification. They only take a few hours to make.

I have just made two of those and enjoyed making them for my great nephews.
I think they are quilts - they're not blankets. And they are pieced - but with much larger pieces! I want to make a quillow for our camper. Hopefully this spring.
I'd call them a quilt. My kids call every blanket a quilt. They have those fleece ones that are tied on the edges that someone gave them and they call those quilts.
I think if you sew 2 layers of fabric together with some sort of layer between them, be it batting or another material, then sew vertical lines to keep the fabric from shifting, you have created a quilt.

Oh gosh....I'm feeling silly here but what is a quillow??
A quillow looks like a pillow until you pull out the inside and unfold it, then it becomes a lap size quilt with a pocket for your feet. Google it, I'm sure you'll find lots of ideas.
Here's how to make one: http://www.quiltbug.com/Articles/quillow.htm |
The ones I made weren't quilts, but if you layer them and quilt them then I consider them quilts.
Oh cool! Thank you!!

I made my first quillow for a friend for Christmas. She loved it. Who knew sewing 2 different fabrics and a batting together and adding a 18 inch pillow top could make someone so happy, but it did. :) I did one side forest green and the other side pink, white, green flowers.
the definition of a quilt is ..
3 layes held together with stitching or ties...so if you have 3 layers and you quilt it....it's a quilt :) |
I have made a few quillows. Mine are all regular quilts with an attached pocket that the quilt folds into. My DH asked me to make a lap quillow with the pocket quilted too, so he could put his chilly toes into the pocket when he is reading.
While every quilt show has a definition of a quilt, they are not always the same. My view is that unless you are showing the quillow, it's up to you what you call it. |

My quillow is a patchworked, quilted quilt. No different from my other lap quilts except it has the pocket (also pieced) on the back to fold the rest inside.
Here's the pocket, with little GFG flowers And the quilt itself has larger GFG flowers |
Does it really matter if they're quilts or not?
ABSOLUTELY they are quilts. They are two layers of fabric with a layer of batting secured through all layers. It even has a bonus pillow attached.
Thanks for the idea for next Christmas!! I'll start as soon as I get this Christmas's projects finished LOL!
Wow, Lacelady that is a fancy Quillow, love it!!!!!!!!!!! :) :)
I have made several quillows and they were quilts in them. So I think yours also qualify.

Lacelady that Quillow is Beautiful :D

I maintain that any three layered fabric held together with stitching is a quilt.

If you can sleep under it, it is a quilt....ART quilts are not quilts....but they have 3 or more layers so technically they are quilts..sigh
The very first quillow I made was a quilt and I added a pocket, no difference. If I was to make another I would do it same way. They are great. In fact I am thinking of doing just that so yes to answer your question, at least mine are quilts with pockets, so should they be called hmmm pocquilt? Naw quillow sounds so much better or maybe quillpoc? LOL.
Oh Lesley, that quillow is so cool! There was a class on making a quillow at my LQS right before Christmas which I didn't go to, but these are really fun I think and in MHO--a quilt!
My answer to your question is: yes. It has three layers, a blanket only has one.
I have made probaby a hundred of these, lost count. The people who receive them love them and actually have come back and asked for another one when they outgrew the old one. It makes a wonderful gift for children since they get lots of use and they can carry them in the car, to camp, on sleepovers. |
Hi,Maybe quillows are different here in the U.K but are certainly quilts because they are pieced and quilted just the same but with a pocket to fold it into,so making a cushion.Wonderful for open air concerts or picnics.A cushion to sit on, and when needed something to cuddle up in and keep warm-- perfect. My husband loves his. I wish all of you a very Happy and Peaceful --(also pieceful) New Year. Letty

quillows are quilts that come with foot warmers as an added bonus. My son even puts a comfort bag in the pocket. As an added comment to Lace Lady I love your angel flower vase I have never seen one like it. RONI

what a neat idea will have to try to make one of those
a quilt is 3 layers sewn together. It is definately a quilt.

I Love Quillows!
I can't tell you how many quillows i have made, seems like once i give them to som eone i get a request for a few more. I have had them for about 3 or 4 years now & really love mine. would'ent be without one.
The name quillow means it is a quilt made into a pillow or pillow that can then become a quilt.
My grand daughters (ages 9 & 12) made them in a sewing class and then last Christmas (09) made then for aunts & uncles. Here is a poem I found and they put one with each quillow
Use me as a pillow Unless you get cold Then pull out my stuffing And gently unfold I'm a lap quilt now With space for your feet And when you're all done Fold me back nice and neat The grandaughters took them to church camp last year. |
I may add that as a project this year for my grandchildren.
