It is called Swirls and it was a free pattern.
http://www.pbtex.com The pattern calls for 8 inch square but I just used 5 inch charms instead. I love the pattern and it is so simple, just HST. I used a couple of marble charm packs. I just went to the website and they no longer have that pattern available. Just make HST that are half light and half dark then put a narrow sashing and borders. The layout is easy to figure out with a picture. |
I think the real or first charm quilts were all different fabrics. Now there are some variations. Some use two matching squares in the quilt and the child has to find the pair. In the year 2000, there were a lot of quilts designed for 2000 fabrics, 2000 pieces. Just a couple of variations.

Thanks Barb! I like it. Its on my to do list !!....

One charm pack dosnt go that far. I usually buy 3 of the same fabrics.

Cut idea. I like the offset look rather than just doing framed squares. I will try this on my next I Spy quilt.

I Spy was a book that came out maybe 10 (?) years ago and a lot of the square and charm quilts are a spin off from the original idea. Barb |
love the ideas!!! I have 200 or so pastel charms and am looking for ideas...they will probably sit another year until I can come up with the perfect project for them!

I do all of mine out of novelty fabrics, fussy cutting alot of the motifs. I try and make sure not to have two fabrics the same (unless I am doing a Match Game quilt, but that's another topic!) I think I have more fun selecting fabric and cutting out the squares than the kids do playing the game! :D |
When I do this lecture, we have a fabric exchange. Everyone brings 48 squares and goes home with 48 plus a few extras.
I will be giving this lecture again in Platteville, WI at the 2010 Sewing and Quilting Expo at UW-Platteville on June 4. It is the first year of the Expo at the University and I am really looking forward to having one this close to me. Barb |
I am going on a bus trip to Shipshewana in May, I'll be loading up on kids prints and lots of 'I spy" friendly fabrics. Thank you, GrammaO
|
You will love Shipshewanna ! It is awesome How long will you be there for ?
|
We will only be there for the day. We go every year. Last year three of us went by car and had a great time. I forget the name but we stayed at a huge hotel next to Yoder's Dept. Store. Fabulous! I could have stayed there for a week but we had a death in the family the day we got there so came home early. The flea market is not for me but the fabric stores are to die for. Can't wait to go to Lolly's, I've been saving all year.

LOL I agree... was it the hotel with the water park ? i have to stay away at the moment , wish i could go 8-) It is a bad... bad... bad ... place for me and my money

Moda fabrics produces batches of fabric that go together as a group and get a name like Autumn or Lucy or Animal On Tour. For every batch they also produce: a package of 5" squares called Charms a package of 2.5" by 42" strips called Jelly Rolls a package of 10" squares called Layer Cakes a package of 1/5" by42" strips called Honey Buns There may be another couple of these packages, I forget. Sometimes a batch of fabric might have less than 40 different colors or patterns or come combination of both and one way or another so Moda often puts in duplicates to make the count come up to the usual number. Sometimes Moda won't put in the duplicates and the Charm package sells for less than a 40 package would. As far as I know Moda makes these for all of its batches of fabrics - but that might just be wishful thinking. This seller has Charms for several batches of Moda fabrics and instead of displaying the package where only the top shows, she/he displays the spread out package (supplied by Moda) so you can see exactly what's in each of the Charm packages she/he offers. http://www.cpatchq.com/charmpacks.html Ta Da! Hope this helps, Lucy. Jois |
It takes about 3 1/2 to 4 hours to get there from here. We are just across the river from Detroit so it is quite a long ride but we talk so much the time just flies.
There is some new law in Canada about how long the driver can be at the wheel so we only go for the day. I wish we could put together an overnight trip. I'd be first in line to sign up. It's ok though. any time in Shipshewana is good time. |
Aren't the triangles also called turnovers ? LOL
|
Sorry about the double post. ooops

I'm having the hardest time lately sewing. GEEZZZ. I started making this 5" square top and I got the last row sewed last night..WELL...One of my rows I put the block the wrong wayyyy. Now I have to take it apart and fix it. I seem to be doing more ripping then anything lately. Then I also realized I put the strips the wrong way too..but that I can live with.

The triangles are called turnovers, although I haven't seen them often or in all the collections. I am jealous of all you who live close to these neat shows, classes, etc. I love living in a small town in the middle of nowhere most of the time, but it does limit my exposure to all this great stuff! TG for the internet!

Yes...It was a quick and easy pattern...But..No it did matter and I had to fix it....Just finished it. I don't like the 1st border but I'm not fixing it. I'm gonna give this to the Project Linus Charity. I did use my scraps for this.

I like it! Yes, this pattern is quick and perfect for Project Linus as well as baby quilts.
Thanks for sharing the photo. I am going to save the photo to use when I give the next lecture on this if that is okay. Barb |
What is the name of this pattern? Or does it have one? Very cute quilt! I like it.
|
The quilt is out of Judy Martin's Log Cabin book. Hers is a little more complicated and has a pieced border.
