I recently taught a class in Oshkosh Wisconsin at their Quilting Expo. The name of the class was, "Do You See What I See?" I asked the group for photos and suggestions for using 5" squares in their quilts.

I wanted to thanks everyone who sent photos. I put together a simple pattern and thought I would share the photos here. It is very effect and very simple. Ignore the white lines between the mock up of the blocks. This was just so I could show how the blocks were put together.

The measurements on the strips are 2" X 5" and 2" X 6 1/2" and the block is a 5" square. The third picture shows the rotation of the blocks. To make the quilt wider, just add more blocks in the same rotation. To make longer, just add more rows.

This is a quick and fun child's quilt. I will add a couple of other pictures, too.

Here are a couple of more quilts from the same pattern.

The first was made from a ladies' clothing. I get orders for a fair number of these quilts and this pattern works great.

The second is kid's prints again and surrounded with a bright green fabric. This is all the same piece of fabric in a hand dye fabric.

Enjoy and if you have any questions, please ask.

I also bookmarked this as I've been looking for a quick quilt to make using charm squares. Mine are 4 inch but I think they'd work as well for the baby quilt I have in mind.

THat is a nice arrangement. Thanx for sharing this idea! Your finished projects are great! I like those buttons too.

I just wanted to comment on using buttons on baby quilts.
Buttons should never be used on a baby quilt. A definite choking hazard. Also rag quilts shouldn't be given to babies because of all the 'threads' are also choking hazards.

Smiles, Thanks, I saved this as well..

This is a great quilt for our Community Quilts projects. It would look equally good in fabric for older adults at the local nursing home. The best thing is that it is beginner friendly and you could make it very scrappy or more controlled depending on your taste. Many thanks for sharing an easy attractive quilt pattern.

Thanks for sharing. I've got a couple baby quilts to make - I think I'll use this pattern. I love quick and easy.

Quiltsbybarb 03-27-2010 06:21 AM

This is very true. The quilt with the buttons was the one made from a ladies clothes and was NOT for a child. I took all the button from the clothing and then sewed them to the quilt. This was a keepsake for an older grandchild.

Hi neighbor
I live about 1 1/2 hrs from you.
If you need a sewing machine, check out JoAnn's in Dunbar and ask to talk to Linda Banker. She can set you up

How do you bookmark a subject? I've tried in upper left hand corner, but doesn't work!

Click on BOOKMARK. a bar for you to add any notes that you may want to help you remember why you've bookmarked this thread (at least, that's what I do) will pop up in that same area. Then click on save.

lucyb 03-27-2010 09:01 PM

I always thought a charm quilt was a quilt that had no two peices of the same fabric.

Love it! What pattern did you use? I have 3 packs of colorful batik charms and think this would make a perfect wall hanging for them.
