To my pleasant surprise it appraised at $1750. I am still stunned. My sister wanted to give it back to me, but I made it for her and it needs to go home with her.....right after the quilt show.

I have never been to a quilt show. I have a newbie question for you. Do they charge you to appraise a quilt?

Which only shows to go ya that the people who turn their noses up at a "home-made" quilt and make snide remarks have absolutely no CLUE what they are talking about....

Yes. This appraiser charged $35. She is an appraiser through the American Quilter's Society.

I have a quilt given to me that was made by my husbands great aunt which some of the family think is possibly one of the underground railroad quilts. its in rotten condition, very dirty, mice eaten out a corner, i'm at a loss where to start, leave it as is, clean it up, get it appraised, authenticated and to who do i take it?

macgma2001 04-12-2010 12:49 PM

They lived in southeast Georgia during the civil war and i've seen the pattern in the book that eleanor burns did about the underground railroad quilts but i don't know who to trust, least of all myself, to take care of it.
