For black fabric, I like Michael miller's jet black. Muslin is a basic fabric that comes only in white or natural ( cream) shades. Once it's dyed, as far as I know it's no longer called muslin.

I use quilt backings all the time for my blocks and sashings, especially if it's a neutral color. Better value for the $$!!

I don't understand why you are asking. There is no difference in the fabric except size.
