Hi everyone,
I have only made one quilt, a rag quilt. I am hoping to try my hand at a D9P soon. What way do you prefer to edge/bind your quilt? Do you prefer using the backing material or bias tape? Is either way easier than the other? Thanks for the info and help. Have a great day/evening!! |
Double fold binding
|
I take a 2.5 inch strip, fold in half and machine sew to back of quilt. Then I flip it over and hand stitch to front of quilt. I miter the corners. I love doing the binding. there are great videos on line regarding how to do this.

I always make my own, same way that hopetoquilt does.
I have found that the prepared parkaged binding does not wear well, frays on edge after awhile. I also think that the binding is the final frame on the quilt and usually use a fabric that will give the quilt it's final flurish. If I use a plaid, or any geometric pattern, I like it on the bias. |
2.5" strip folded sewed to front and folded to the back and hand stithed. with mitred corners. Lots of tutorials
Look for my binding tutorial on www.quilterstv.com |
I like to make a separate binding from some of the fabric used in the quilt. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-124902-1.htm
Here is one tutorial. There are lots of tutorials on the web. Google how to bind a quilt and you will get lots of information. Find a style that you like. There is no right or wrong. |
Double fold binding. Cut 2.5"
|
Thanks everyone! I'm sure I will have a ton of questions when and if I ever get that part of the quilt.
|
Hi EmsMom, I am in WA, too. I like to do a doubled-over binding, too and also think that sometimes a bias one looks really great ( in the case of plaids and some patterns).
|
I prefer making my own binding to match.
|
I do what hopetoquilt does except I machine sew to the front of the quilt and then hand sew to the back.
|
I make my own binding out of one of the fabrics in my quilt or scrappy with all the fabrics of the quilt. I measure the quilt and then cut enough strips 2.25" to bind the quilt. Sew the strips together and then iron the binding in half. I sew it on the front of the quilt, miter corners and hand sew to the back of the quilt.
|
I like scrappy strips, cut at 2.5 inches and joined with a diagonal seam with the excess fabric then trimmed. Iron in half and roughly placed and adjusted on quilt before sewing to avoid seams at the corners, if at all possible. I like my hand stitching on the front, but may try it on the back next time, I don't think it really matters except maybe to a quilting judge.

now you don't have to do a two color binding as shown here. just do it as shown onto each side of your quilt and sew. individual binding. no mitered corners as in one long strip of binding. have fun. |

I follow the way Lynette Jensen (Thimbleberries) says cut strips 2-3/4" fold and press in center and sew with a 3/8" seam onto the front and hand sew onto the back.

Look for my binding tutorial on www.quilterstv.com I do mine the same way, but my starting strip is 2-3/4", and I use a 3/4 inch seam allowance. |

Huh. I make the back a little oversized, fold it to the front and hand stitch. I thought lots of people did it that way. Guess not.
|
I always make my own double fold binding. When I have curves I use bias that I make myself. Most of the time I use some fabric from in the quilt itself - if I have enough, if not I use a contrasting color.
|
I do the same as Holice on the binding.

I have been taught to bind two different ways. One easier than the other. First, use the binding you make yourself from a 2and 1/2 inch strips. Fold and press in half and you now have a strip 1 and 1/4 inches wide. Line up raw edges and sew either on the front or the back (your preference) with quarter inch seam. Then fold to back or front, whichever you choose to leave for last and hand stich remaining binding. Other way I learned in a class. Leave an extra 3-4 inches extended on the backing when you layer your quilt. When ready to bind, trim the batting and quilt top so they are even. Then trim the excess backing to the desired width - in other words, if you want a wider binding on the front, you would trim to 3 inches, fold in half , press, and then bring the remaining 1 and 1/2 inches to the front. Your raw edges are tucked underneath. With this method you can then machine stich the binding on the front. Sometimes I use a decorative stitch since it on the front of the quilt; REMEMBER, your stiches will also show through on the back of the quilt. You miter the corners as you go. I find this method very easy and convenient and a lot faster since you don't have to make and sew the binding seperately. Good luck.

I cut the 2.5" strips on the straight of grain (if I have the length) so it does not stretch. I sew it to the back, pull it to the front and use a decorative machine stitch to sew it down (my hands hurt too much to hold a needle).
If I am doing scallops, then I cut bias strips. |

I make my own binding out of one of the colors in the quilt. Cut it 2.5 inches, fold it over, sew it to the front, turn and hand stitch to the back. I have never tried to turn the backing to the front.

http://settlerspeace.typepad.com/set...-bindings.html this is a very good tutorial...it inspired me and gave me courage to finish my granddaughters baby quilt (she's 15 months now)...LOL
|
I make my own double fold binding! :-D
|
THANKS everyone so much for all the tips and information. I'm not quite as nervous about binding as I first was! :)
|
I do double fold binding. I like to sew my binding down to the back, then use a decorative stitch when I sew it down to the front.

(aka double fold binding) I don't mind binding at all. Happy sewing! |

I also do what sushi does, and I really enjoy it. Missouri Star Quilt Company has an excellent tutorial (video) on it.

I, too, make my own binding. I like to match the fabric to the quilt. I much prefer bias binding 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 inches wide, although straight-of-grain binding will do also. Machine stitch it to the front, then hand stitch it carefully to the back, mitering the corners. Store-bought bias tape simply does not make satisfactory binding as it doesn't wear very well. Good luck!!!!
