What quilt binding issues do you have that are keeping UFOs in your closet?

Jennifer22206 10-29-2011 07:42 AM

none. I love binding. :)

mustangquilts 10-29-2011 07:47 AM

Same here, only it's movies. I stream netflix all day while I bind more than one quilt.

What is the easiest way to sew the binding strips together at an angle (to reduce bulk). It never works out for me so i just do a straight edge. Thats my frustration...

Same here. It's the borders that seem to slow me down. Especially if they have a pattern that needs careful measuring and matching. Binding has never been a problem for me.

lalaland 10-29-2011 09:19 AM

I hate to do binding, my SIL used to do all my binding for me, but since I discovered the "bring the backing over to the front as the binding" method, which I really like, my projects are getting done!

I do the same only because I can't sit and just watch TV, I have to keep my hands busy. Doing binding is great in front of the TV.

Do you trim your seams? and once you make the fold do you cut off the extra "wings" of fabric?

scraphq 10-29-2011 09:48 AM

None. I have never had a UFO because of binding. Will not talk about other reasons for UFO's! LOL!

Holice 10-29-2011 09:59 AM

To get "straight" diagonal seams for joining binding....
lay one strip over the end of the other extending about 1/4" on end of each piece. Put needle in the "v" of upper left and sew to "v" of lower right. Putting the needle in the "v" is not into the fabric but is to line up the seam on the edge. Works every time to get good straight joinings. Look at my program on www.quilterstv.com on binding. There are two and will have to scroll thru to find both of them. The newer one addes to the original.

belmer 10-29-2011 10:26 AM

I hate sewing binding on quilts... That is why I end up doing another project. But I sure am happy to say, as of yesterday I have NO UFO's in my sewing room. I really had to push myself to finish them though!

needles3thread 10-29-2011 11:06 AM

I really like hand stitching the binding while I am resting
in the evenings.

gramajo 10-29-2011 05:04 PM

I hate binding. I have RA & my hands are particularly bad, so I have to machine stitch both sides. I machine stitch the binding to the back, but then it is very difficult for me to pin once I've turned the binding to the front. The sewing isn't the problem--it's getting those darned pins through all the layers.

dunster 10-29-2011 05:21 PM

I don't mind doing the binding. I look forward to getting started so I can get it finished and have another quilt completed.

I wish I lived close to you. I would exchange my binding, for something you don't like to do. LOL

quiltbuddy 10-30-2011 04:47 AM

I have one with prairie points that really has to be completed one of these days. Is that considered binding?

I never use pins anymore to do binding, I use the small snap-clip for hair I get at the dollar store, got tired of getting stuc by the pins, works great and lots cheaper than the ones you get at Joann's or other fabric stores.

Me too! I have 11 different ways to accomplish the last and almost the most important part of a quilt! The binding is the frame to showcase your art!
I too use 2-3 hair clips, I hate pins

Buckeye Rose 10-30-2011 05:02 AM

None! By the time I get to the binding I am so excited to be almost done that putting on binding is a breeze. It also means that I can start on my next project

purplefiend 10-30-2011 05:18 AM

I make my bindings all by machine. No problems with binding.

Kaye Wood has an excellent way to sew binding on and it always comes out right.

This should make your binding problems easier:

My problem has always been the corners, getting them mitered to my satisfaction, front and back. Now I just round them off and have no trouble at all!

MK, go look at those videos I just posted.....

Mkotch 10-30-2011 06:23 AM

Thanks, but I've taken several classes, watched umpteen videos, and gotten tutored. Still prefer rounded corners!

Jackie Spencer 10-30-2011 06:39 AM

I used to dread doing the binding too, but it was because I did'nt know how, once I was taught how, I loved doing it. No one enjoys doing something that is difficult for them.

G-MaDiane 10-30-2011 06:42 AM

I love to do the binding. It's my favorite part of making a quilt.

Check out Sharon Shamber's binding videos on youtube, she uses glue and it works great.

I hate to do bindings. I usually wait until I have a couple to do and then just buckle down and do it. I hate them because I am a lousy hand sewer. I have taken to trying different types of total machine binding. I have just ordered a book about bindings and maybe that will help and I just bought a contraption that is suppose to alllow you to stitch the back of the binding in the ditch so it doesn't show as much. Still have to practice with that one.

smcfadden 10-30-2011 07:57 AM

Am working on learning how to make sharp mitered corners. The truth is I love starting quilts, but the finishing parts bore me.

ncredbird 10-30-2011 07:58 AM

I use the glue method and love it. No pins to contend with and if I should get interrupted before I finish it will still be there when I get back. Also great to use to take in the car and work on because I don't have to worry about getting stuck and can crumple it up in my lap while working on it and fold it neatly to store between work sessions. Gingersnap 10-30-2011 09:06 AM

I have a hard time with binding since I have severe arthritis in my hands and am looking for an easier way to do it with the machine so it looks nice on the back side as this runner will be reversable thanks for any help you quilters can give me
