Sometimes when I see all the beautiful quilts on here, I think, I would never have thought of those colors together, and somehow they work. Maybe I am just color challenged.

Me too! I think coordinating fabrics is the hardest for me.

instead of worrying about colors try making a quilt with just values...light-medium- and darks with no regard to color what so ever...you may find it liberating and learn alot about putting colors together. i know in fashion we would (laugh) about someone wearing plaid pants with a flowered shirt and a striped vest...but in quilting you can put all of those together just fine and beautifully.

I feel the same. I think scrap quilts would be the hardest...I see some here that are just beautiful though.

That's why I make scrap quilts because I have a hard time coordinating colors.

Get the book "Color Magic for Quilters" . It's great and helps a lot. Check amazon for a used one.

I was in retail- both fabrics & ready-to-wear & I always thought I was pretty good at putting colors together, but I felt a lot of my quilts were pretty blah. I tend to try to coordinate too much & am beginning to concentrate more on contrast. Still learning, I guess!

This was the hardest part for me too, when I started quilting, and that was less than 5 years ago. I read Color from the Heart by Gai Perry and did some of the exercises in the book. (Okay, I admit I only did one exercise, but I read the others and did them in my head, LOL)

Then I just practiced, and looked at other quilts, and practiced some more, and now people tell me I am good at putting fabrics together. Me! I thought I had no color sense at all. Now I love putting fabrics together. This is a skill that can be learned, and if I could do it then anyone can.

Also, I find that scrap quilts are the easiest - IF you let them be scrappy. Just put the fabrics together without looking at the color, paying attention only to lights and darks, and it WILL work out.

I stink at putting colors together - so scrap and monotone is the only comfortable thing for me. I also have a problem with lights - I think they "come forward" too much. I'm trying ... have read all the books ... but still tend to stay in the "medium" range no matter what. Scared? Not enough selection at Joann's? Need to branch out - any suggestions?

Find a piece of fabric that has a lot of different colors in it that you just love.
Then look for all of those different colored fabrics in different sized prints/designs/tonals etc...
Just use these pieces in a quilt, not the original fabric that you pulled the colors from. If they all look good together in that fabric, they will all look good together in a quilt too :D:D:D
