Do you wash a quilt that you are entering in the fair?

The rules for our county fair say specifically that the quilt can NOT be washed. But your county may be different. I found my county rules online, under the "___ County Extension Office."

I don't wash, but usually there are not quilting markings

I don't. If I had marks to remove, I'd just wet those spots. Personally, I've been to some local shows and have seen washed, wrinkly quilts hanging (and don't like it). They look like they're used and someone just pulled them off a bed to bring to the show.

I never enter my quilts in anything.

No, quilts that hang in shows or competitions usually look better without that "used" look. Unless, in your fair it is an antique reproduction type of venue. Then it would look older washed.

I don't wash beforehand.

I wash every quilt I finish. Doesn't matter if it's for the fair, a quilt show, a gift or a sale.

You really do need to check the "rules" for every fair and/or show you might enter.
Don't assume!
... as some allow washed items to compete whereas some would disqualify you.


Similarly there are so many other twists and turns to potential "rules",
... so always be sure to read the fine print.
