Lots of us have either planned or unplanned "orphan" blocks, and many end up in quilts or wallhangings just like you thought of. It's fun to try to find creative ways to put them together. I think a lot of them turn out surprisingly well because they are a like a diary of your work. It will be fine.

go for it. if nothing else it serves as a storybook of your "quilting career.... if you don't like the top just make sure you use a pretty backing :-)

Years ago when I started making quilts for our bi-annual (is that right? every 2 years) family reunions I came up with this great idea that I would keep one block from each quilt and wind up with a sampler quilt. Great idea - however, I have no clue as to where those extra blocks went - probably someplace very special. So, I believe that you have come up with a great idea and no it will not be ugly - it will be a very special quilt with special memories.

I think you have a great idea. Use black sashing and it all will be fine. It will be interesting to have a quilt for yourself made with one of each block that you have used in other quilts. That's even better than using your scraps in a quilt. You will be able to see and tell friends and family about each block. The recipients of the quilts will recognize 'their block' in your quilt. Go for it!

I have pictures of each quilt and scraps of the fabric used. Sometimes I will write a little about the journey of making the quilt.

That is an excellent idea. I wish I had started that when I made my 1st quilt. But, going forward, I am going to do it. Many times I have made practice blocks, but I end up doing practice quilting or other fancy stitches on the block. Thanks for the idea.

I love all the ideas of putting a piece of every quilt into 1 quilt. Great ideas.

It's a great idea, and I love the name Frankenstein for it. If I could do that it would definitely be a monster, but I'm going to start thinking in those terms as I look at scraps and straggler blocks.

I think it is a great idea. Try sashing the blocks with a solid color. The way you would with a t-shirt quilt. The only issue I see is that all the blocks would be different sizes.

I think it would make a pretty sampler block quilt with black sashing!
