Quilt guild gift

I recently joined a quilting guild and we will have a gift exchange in Dec. The object should be considered a notion and the limit to spend is $10. We will play a game with gifts being handed around so I don't know who will end up with it. What would be a good gift? what would you like to receive?
Thanks for your ideas.

I often do a JoAnn's coupon and get something that equals out to $10. I'd love to receive a new ruler or machine gloves or even a Klutz glove.

quiltinghere 10-26-2013 01:28 PM

$10 worth of rotary cutting blades...45mm or 60mm

Small items that total up to $10....$1 seam rippers, new pins, marking pencil (Fons&Porter about $7.00)

Good Chocolate!

Nan

Fabric or a sm set of stubby screw drivers, or a pen with something quilting on it. So many things out there that would work.

eparys 10-26-2013 01:36 PM

Needle threader?

dunster 10-26-2013 01:41 PM

I would say FQs, but that's not a notion. A good pair of small scissors is always nice. Fine pins. I think we could take a vote and decide that chocolate is a notion. :)

GagaSmith 10-26-2013 01:49 PM

I definitely do believe chocolate is a notion.

Two F&P seam rippers----------I think they're about $5. IMO, you need two at every chair you use while quilting.

SmickChick 10-26-2013 05:19 PM

Our local flea market has real GLASS magnifying glasses....for $1!!!! That, along with some "maggies"...(eyeglasses in 1.5 magnification---in my case anyway!!!!) for $1 at the Dollar Store. A roll of parchment paper from Sams/Costco. Super big, i.e. 2.5 gal ziploc bags; various colored Sharpies, blue painters tape....at the list goes on and on...Obviously not suited for more traditional thinkers......actually, I told myself that I needed to find a large lot of scapel blades like the doctors use. I have been buying two similar type blades at Hobby Lobby, and really need a larger stash of these. For me, they beat the heck out of seam rippers!

Have a nice holiday event!
OMG: "Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!!!!"

Tartan 10-26-2013 05:25 PM

Maybe one of fancy seam rippers with rubber stitch pieces erasers on the other end. A package of the flower head pins and the magnetic mechanics bowl to put them in. Thread snips on a retractable leash with a clip. A specialty ruler like the Twister, X-block. One of the rubbery doughnuts that holds bobbins.

Nechama117 10-26-2013 05:30 PM

I received a rack for rulers last year at our guild and find it very useful. Joanne's has them.

SuzieQuilts 10-27-2013 04:37 AM

A 10 dollar gift certificate to the LQS.

quilter2theend 10-27-2013 04:41 AM

Guess I'll have to google "scapel blades" to see what they are. And I never have enough bags to organize my project into so that would be a good gift for a person like me.

How about something like this? I send these to swap partners as part of their gift. I used them when I made a Labyrinth quilt - much better than labels which always disappear and pins that stab you, lol!

I buy the beads on eBay in alphabet sets. You could get number ones instead. You could use curved safety pins instead. Also, you could make a little pouch to keep them in or pin them to a pretty quilted mat.

Put a note in, advising that they use them in seams. I read somewhere that pins left in a quilt for a long time actually rusted!

BellaBoo 10-27-2013 06:19 AM

The best new notion I have are the small Wonder Clips from Clover. I use those instead of pins. You can get a card of 10 for $5. Add a long measuring tape to the package.

mom-6 10-27-2013 06:31 AM

A few things on my wish list are a bobbin box, more flat head pins, a ruler organizer, a larger cutting mat, a longer ruler, a thread catcher, a scrap organizer.
Some of my items are beyond your suggested spending limit however.

mighty 10-27-2013 08:05 AM

Everyting mentioned sounds great, also a perfect piecing seam guide by collins is nice.

I never can think of anything. Your list is going to town with me. Course, I could just go look around my quilt studio.
Reducing glass, clip on magnifying lenses, pipe cleaner strung with prewound bobbins and applique needles, white elephant, glue sticks, post it notes, distilled water, spritz bottle, portable iron mat that fold to a hot mit for iron, 5 pairs of Harbor Freight disposable scissors, scissor case, storage box, tracing paper, freezer paper, jar of old buttons, retractable measuring tape that fits in a purse, calculator that fits in a purse, snap-it bag, chap stick, mechanical pencil, temporary marking pen/pencil, pen cushion/trash bag, mat that goes under the machine with pockets on front to hold notions, tomato pen cushion marked with sizes/types sewing machine needles, nail files, Command strips, home made quilt hanger (thinking of heavy metal wire bent into a design, kind of like a garment hanger)....what fun it is to brainstorm......and of course.....chocolate. ...OH and it could be tied with wired craft ribbon.... OH and wrapped in a fat quarter. Did anyone get my name?

institches33 10-28-2013 03:10 AM

Ask around as to what has been exchanged in the past. Our guild started off with a $10 exchange, but no one even stayed close to the amount. I would say it's at least $20 - often more.

tkee 10-28-2013 04:26 AM

I would use that as an excuse to browse in Harbor Freight.

Wonnie 10-28-2013 04:30 AM

Hemostat's.....Don't know what I'd do without mine. I have 3 different sizes.

yonnikka 10-28-2013 05:05 AM

I wish somebody would give me a seam ripper that does not roll off the tabletop onto the floor, or a thread cutter that is a pendant that can be worn onto an airplane, or a really good quality Permanent Marker for Fabric, (NOT a sharpie), to write nicely on the Label. If wishes were fishes, we'd all be in stitches.

Gerbie 10-28-2013 05:10 AM

We are doing the same type of gift giving at outs this year, only we did not limit it to notions, also placing a $5.00 amount for the gift, then everyone puts in $2.00 each for a gift Cert. from Joann's that will be purchased, someone's name or number will be drawn for that. Joann's has only been open near us for less than a year,. However we still have to drive 85 miles to get there, but at least it is a new and stocked fabric shop for us, we have to drive the same distance to get to Hobby Lobby and WalMart, and the only quilt shop there as well.
I know this item isn't small, but price wise it fits the bill ($4.99 or 5.99) I don't remember for sure, I recently purchased a 48" metal ruler from Harbor Freight mainly to use when cutting my long strips for borders and bindings, all of my other rulers are only 24" or less. I love it, much better than having to measure many times over or try and use a yard stick. Since it is metal, it doesn't slide around like the acrylic rulers do, and it is just heavy enough to stay put. All of my quilting guild loved it and want to get one.
Chocolate is definitely a Notion- "I have a notion I want some chocolate"!! lol.
I also made a great purchase this summer, and absolutely love them, quilters clamps from Me Sew.com. They are inexpensive for one set of 14, I'm thinking $7.00 , not sure the exact price, they are not at all like the wonder clamps and these I've found to definitely work, I have always used painters tape, but these are life savers. You might want to check them out. You would have time to get them in if your ordered them before Christmas. Have fun at your party

Neesie 10-28-2013 06:43 AM

I would rather receive one 'splurge' item, than a bunch of small items, as a gift. I have no trouble buying myself the smaller, less expensive things. I would use a coupon and spend the $10, after the discount. A small pair of scissors is always good, as well as rotary blades, small cutting mat, templates . . . . Would an acid-free box (for finished blocks) be considered a notion? :D Probably not, huh? I have one that's made for scrapbook pages, that's just perfect for my 12.5" blocks. :)

tessagin 10-28-2013 06:48 AM

The list is endless! I like to give gift cards that are multi business use. I get gift cards from Visa, you can use them anywhere.

wendiq 10-28-2013 06:53 AM

Seam ripper along with some matte Scotch tape to pick up the ripped pieces......

MaryMo 10-28-2013 06:59 AM

lots of superb ideas here .... wonderful!

dellareya 10-28-2013 07:49 AM

I wish we could do thing like a gift exchange in our guild, but we have about 175 attend each meeting and more show up for our Christmas meeting. I think it would just to much chaos.

WMUTeach 10-28-2013 07:57 AM

My guild does something like this also for Christmas. We often will "re-gift" a book, pattern or other unopened item that we have on hand. I got a new copy of the Farmer's Wife book once and another time a pile of coordinating fat quarters someone did not want.

GagaSmith 10-28-2013 11:15 AM

Thanks for all the great ideas. I bought a pair of spring loaded scissors with a Joann's coupon and a large chocolate bar. I hope the recipient likes it.

joanieowen 10-28-2013 12:26 PM

$10.00 gift card. I love them

junegerbracht 10-28-2013 01:38 PM

A quilting group I belong to do does this at its Christmas party - it is always fun. We do have a higher set $ amount. I would stay clear of gift certificates - not much fun. It is amazing what people come up with. And there is always one gift that everyone wants to trade for.

maryellen2u 10-28-2013 01:40 PM

I bought myself the "cutting gizmo" and it is a wonderful notion!

meanmom 10-28-2013 03:26 PM

I would like one of those 12 inch square boxes. I'm not sure of the price. It is a plastic box with a handle great for storing your current project or UFO's. I have made a pincushion the last 2 years. Last year I made a box of chocolates pin cushion. People went nuts over it. Just google it and the pattern will come up.

mimiof4 10-28-2013 03:30 PM

Count me in I surely think chocolate is a notion.

meanmom 10-28-2013 04:03 PM

http://suzyssitcom.com/2011/07/featu...-tutorial.html Here is a link that I hope works for the box of chocolate pin cushion. I don't have a picture of mine. I tried to post a picture from the website but I don't know how. (I think I flunked computers) It is pretty easy to make. I put some cute pins in it.

And then you can put the pins and beads in a handmade fabric box!!!

Tiggersmom 10-28-2013 07:40 PM

LOVE it!!!! absolutely, why didn't I ever classify it that way before????????? LOL:thumbup:

I love the Seam Fix seam rippers and have found them at Wal-Mart. Also love magnetic pin holders that have a cover that can go over them. Wish I could remember where I bought the one I liked the best. It has storage in the bottom, then the magnetic dish, and a plastic cover that goes over it all. May have gotten it at Wal-Mart too. These are my favorite inexpensive notions. You could even make a cute pin cushion to add to the package for a little color! (and a nice piece of chocolate!)
