Fat Quarter Shop online has the best quilt kits around. I buy from them mostly, if I want to buy a kit. They send large portions of fabrics and they are beautifully wrapped. They have pages and pages of quilt kits. They are a very high class joint. I recommend them over any other place. fatquartershop.com

or choose a pattern from a book/magazine. say you want a brown for the main color. choose a brown with flowers, or a brown with dots, etc. your secondary color will be the colors in the flowers or the dots. then add white. or let someone elses finished quilt be your color scheme. a color wheel from a paint store will help lots.

Kits are fun but don't be so scared to choose fabric, yes it takes time and is hard but it can be so lovely. Sometimes fabrics you choose might look better than kits. I do both buy kits and make my own

I, too, like Connecting Threads fabrics and kits. I always have leftover fabrics when I make one of their quilts from a kit.

I make a lot of quilts with packs of fat quarters or other precuts. Layer cakes (10" squares) are my new best friend. I just finished quilts for my grandsons preschool teacher and my loving daughter said - who picked the fabrics for you? That meant she loved them and knew they were not solely my choosing. She knows me well.

I've purchased a couple of kits - they contained specialty fabric I couldn't get elsewhere or fabric not available in my area. Most of the time I think picking the fabric is most of the fun. The best place to learn how to pick fabric is at your LQS. Spend time there watching what others pick, ask them why they made the choices they made. It will help you understand what you need to do to pick out stunning fabric for your quilts.

I've been happy with kits from Keepsake Quilting and Connecting Threads. I love the kits from the Fat Quarter Shop. They are always accurate and they are very generous with fabric.

The kits are nice, they do all of the selecting and at times I like that. My only concern with kits, is that there be enough fabric to make it, does not allow for little mistakes from me. I do like picking fabric out for a particular quilt or for a maybe. It is amazing at times how the maybes are used in time.

I have a cabinet full of quilt kits. Most are from Connecting Threads and Hancock's of Paducah. I do a lot of BOM quilt kits too. Sometimes I use the fabric for other patterns then what the kit has.

When I first started quilting, I was also having difficulty. I had no "artistic" bone in my body, so I always questioned and second guessed myself. One day, I thought "what the heck" and just started choosing colors that I liked, and it was pretty darned good, so I say trust your instincts, and choose what you like. Who says every quilt has to be color coordinated? I make quilts in colors that I like, and so far, the finished product is always better than I imagined when I started. Sometimes, the fabric even "talks" to me, and tells me what pattern to use with the fabric I have chosen.
On the other hand, Jinny Beyer has wonderful quilt kits available, and she also shows her quilts in different colorways for comparison. Even if you don't buy anything from her site, go to the website (jinnybeyer.com) Quilt Kits tab, and click on some of the patterns to see the difference the color makes to the final product. I will tell you, I don't buy often from her site, because I think it is a little pricey, but the ideas are fabulous.
