Quilt labels?
Do you have a resource for what you write on your quilt labels? If so, what do you use?
I'm making a quilt for a co-worker. I've worked with this person for 15 years. I'm having a hard time trying to come up with what to put on the label. If it makes a difference the pattern I made is the Take 5. Thanks! |
I have no advice, but I am curious about the responses as well. Every time I make a quilt as a gift, I make grand plans to add a quilt label. Then I finish the quilt and never get a label on it before I wrap it up. I need to make that my new year's resolution - to start adding quilt labels.

I usually print my own labels onto fabric (usually bordering the label graphic with the pattern/fabric from the quilt) so it looks like one of the blocks. I also include a photo of myself on the label with the quilt on my lap as if I'm quilting it. I figure 100 years from now no one will know what I look like, so I thought the pic was a nice touch.

I went to Google-typed in Quilt Label sayings, lots of sayings popped up. You might find something you like there.

Suggestion: "Made Especially for (put name of recipient) by (Your name)" and the year.
Quick and not mushy. |
Put the quilt label on the back before you quilt it. If you remember to do that...
|
I print my labels on white fabric and border it with the backing fabric. On the first line I put the name of the quilt - not the block name but a name I came up with, on the second line I put specially made for <name of recipient>, on the next line I put my name and on the last line I put the year. My labels are generally about 4 x 5 inches at the most.

i like indycat's suggestion. i don't put anything too personal on a label unless i'm very close with the recipient.
|
I embroider my labels with my embroidery machine. I include the name of the quilt, who I made it for, made by my name, and the date, sometimes I include other small things or the occasion like a birthday or if it's for Christmas. Always label your quilts...I didn't always do this but now I do!!!!

There are a lot of great ideas on Pinterest. I usually just put something simple like "happy snuggling" along with my name, location and date. I personally like to keep my labels more unobtrusive for the recipient.

I never thought to check Pinterest......
Thanks ladies!! |
For instances like that I purchased prewoven labels that say, Made with love by (my name) my town. They are small like clothing labels and don't have room for a date. I put them on small items and quilts that are give aways.
|
I haven't used any of these yet.. maybe I will in the future so I saved them. I like embroidered labels when I can get them
"My eyes were strong, my hands were true, and filled with love made this for you." From my hands… to your heart A bed without a quilt is like a sky without stars." A quilt will warm your body and comfort your soul." Quilts made with love age with time, but never lose their warmth." |
|
When I put a label on a quilt, I definitely take under consideration who the quilt is for. I always put the name of the quilt. When I put the label on, I may identify my relationship as the maker to the receiver. I hand write all my labels and I definitely put a date on it.

Great suggestions...I'm in the same category as Grinch, I think I will make it my New Year's resolution to add a label.
|
I do a "to" and a "from", along with the pattern name, the year it was completed, and maybe a small personal message.
I use the June Taylor Quilt Label Sheets that are done on the computer and then printed out. Easy, peasy! |

Always label my quilts. Then usually hand embroider. Pinterest and Google are great places to start. Here are a couple of my favorites.

At a bare minimum quilt labels should include:
The quilts name (if you gave it a name) or the pattern name The makers name and completion year City and/or state of maker This information is included for posterity sake and should the quilt ever be discovered as an antique in the future this is the information appraisers want. But rarely is this information included and when it comes down to it... how many of our quilts are heirlooms and do we really expect our quilts to turn up on some future version of "Antiques Roadshow" 100 years from now? :D But I am of the mind that quilts are most definitely our form of art and every artist should sign their work in some way. I try to always label my quilts and I do include this data. If the quilt is a gift I will sometimes put the name of the recipient on the label or the relation (like made especially for my brother XXXX). I really like all of AZ Jane's examples. I also hand embroider most of my labels and like AZ Jane I embroider my signed name in cursive. |
I often put.... the name of the quilt ( not necessarily the pattern name, the name I give the quilt) , the person it is for, any special information like for birthday, Christmas, hope, whatever-- month and year, my name, city, state, fiber content and care instructions. Sometimes I add more depending on occasion or special message I want to add.
