I'm am thinking about trying out a quilt magizine...

Which ones does everyone prefer? and why

Cost is a factor, not so much the $ factor but the value of that $. I consdier my self a beginner/itermed quilter. I prefer lap/table runners and crafty stuff.

I like Fons and Porter, they have projects for all levels.
Try a couple from the library, or just buy a couple and see which ones you like best.

It just depends on you, really. I like Quilter's Newletter best because it has more articles and artsy type stuff. But if you want projects, Quiltmaker or Fons and Porter might be better (I personally am not a fan of Fons and Porter - too many projects that depend entirely on one line of fabric). Quiltmaker has some really cute projects sometimes.

I would go somewhere that has a large selection of magazines and browse through them, to see what magazine seems to have the features YOU would like. You might like McCall's. They seem to have a variety of small projects. I used to have a subscription but let it drop because I wasn't really making anything out of them, but like I said it's all a matter of personal taste.

unforunately , I live ina small town and while we get a few magazines on the rack.. they tend to be diffrernt ones each month.( go figure?!)I do not expect to find EVERYTHING I want to do in each months magazine. Just trying to think out side the box. Magazines now days seem to have more ads than projects or articles.

You might try your library. Sit down with a few and see what you like. I don't subscribe to any anymore. The ones I was getting seemed to be more about advertising and less about quilts. I look for things online more than anything elses

Try a google search for quilt magazines and look at the different ones at their websites. It will give you a good idea of the magazine content.

I like Quiltmaker best.

"The Quilter" has 16 to 18 projects in every issue.

When I was staring out, I just LOVED Fons&Porter.

I get several magazines, but get more out of the American Patchwork and Quilting I think.

I would like one for my IPad!

Recommend you go to a bookstore or newsstand and take a look at all the different magazines. Buy a couple that appeal most to you. Also check out their online sites, that can give you a good preview of what each offers. My Fav are BHG American Patchwork & Quilting and McCalls Quilting. Love the Australian mags too.

My current favorite is Quiltmaker because they have hand embroidery options from time to time in addition to the usual offerings.

I did an on-line subscription to Quiter's World. you paid for one year and got access to two additional years from their archives. I thought it was a pretty good deal.

I have discovered that the measurements for patterns in FP's are not accurate.

Agree with trying them at the library or buy a couple before you invest in a subscription. McCalls is more traditional and I think their directions are very clear. Some of the magazines are very artsy. Just depends on what type quilts you are interested in.

I like Fons and Porter's 'Easy Quilts'.

AQS membership for $25/year comes with subscription to 2 magazines for the year (1/month ) American Quilter and Quilt life - so there is something coming int he mail every month

I would borrow from the library if $$ is a factor.Most magazines become repetitive and boring after a while so I don't bother with subscriptions and just pick up what looks interesting after a quick browse. Now I mostly browse the internet instead and you get more value from watching regular shows such as The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims.

We get McCalls at our library here, and I really like it.

The one I would NOT recommend to anyone is "Quilter's Home". There are very few patterns and too many slams at any and everything in it.

Definitely a waste of money, when subscription expires it definitely won't be renewed. It's gone downhill more every issue.

But as someone else said look through them and purchase an issue of different ones until you find one you like.

Quiltmaker is a good one, so is American patchwork and Quilting, and Pons and Porter, but I think I perfer Quiltmaker. You know, you start with one and end up with many.

If you can find a huge bookstore with lots of choices, I'd go there and play around in the racks til you find what you want. I like Quick Quilts and Easy Quilts. I buy them for the quilt patterns but they have lots of what you're looking for....runners, pin cushions, tote bags, etc.

TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!! My subscription expired a few months ago and I'll never have another one....Just not worth it for a few recipes and three quilt patterns.

May I ask Where I can get the pattern of your Bargello with the cross ? I would love to make this for my niece.

This is me too. I find more in American Patchwork and Quilting that appeals to me. Did like Fons and Porter but not so much these days.

I read Quilter's Newsletter. I work quilt projects from Fons and Porter. I collect the old Quilt magazines and her sister publications.

I am partial to McCalls Quilting and to Better Homes and Garden's Quilting and Patchwork
May not be accurate in naming them, easy to find though.

I also like The Quilter.

We have no BIG selection of magazines in the small town where I live.. The big city stuff would be almost a 3 hrs drive each way..... headed to the library this afternoon to see if they have some. They do not have any listed on their website/catolog.
I have virtually given up magazines as a whole, WAY yo many ads and junk in them, but was considering a quilting one, if I find one that suits me.

I like Quilter's Newsletter and Quiltmaker. Quiltmaker does a good job with suggestions for quilting and has great illustrations and instructions. Quilter's Newsletter has a whole different approach but it carries pictures of some of the big show winners which are fun to look at. It's not so much a "how to" magazine.

Did that too, I love having them available at anytime and not losing the magazine itself or accidentally spilling something on it :)

Quiltmaker helps with different techiniques and has alot of patterns. You can also go on Ebay anf buy Older mags. I find the older 1985-2000 to be very informative, especially Quilters Newsletter. You can get a group of 10 for about $6.00 plus shipping. That to me is more reasonable then paying $25.00 for a catalog from Fons and Porter.

I have recently purchased my first quilt magazine subscription and it is for Quick Quilts. I have gotten many of their magazines off the shelves at stores and I like their patterns.

I used to have subscriptions to American Patchwork and Quilting, Fons & Porter, and Quilter's Newsletter. I only have American P & Q, now. F&P just started bugging me for some reason and QN got WAY political. Well, I buy quilting magazines for quilting, not politics. Plus, if I want to read the ones I dropped I can do that at the library. Seldom do I buy a quilt magaziine anymore. I think I have too many projects (100s!) I want to do and haven't gotten to yet.
