I like the idea of a headstone cozy.

Hi all... sorry... I looked on the back of the calendar and there's no info... so I don't know who published it? But I love the idea of etching/engraving a simple quilt/block on the headstone!

some of you are so funny! love all the remarks!! Love you all!!

LOL that one would be easy, a little paint or coloured grout/concrete and good to go!

We got on the subject of funerals and quilts at our last retreat. One of the ladies said that She wanted all the people that she had made a quilt for, to bring them to her funeral.
I had not thought about a going away quilt, but I may have to make one. I have already told my family that I want to be buried in a pretty long gown and housecoat. I believe in being comforable. LOL

QuiltingJaguar 07-18-2011 04:07 PM

Well you could request you being covered with one of your quilts when you die, and take it with you!!

tumrub 07-18-2011 04:22 PM

last year when we sold the parents house instead of getting the money each of the five kuds had to do our funeral arrangments. I don't have a headstone yet but my coffin has a quilt pattern on the lid inside & the blankie on the top is a quilt so is the pillow . Haven;t thought about the headstone yet. Tumrub

My daughter in law is a funeral director and son does headstones so I think they have it all figured out already.

My aunt was murdered a few years ago but an unknown person who got into her car...anyway her little memorial folder had photos of her quilts as well as the saying, "Housework Never, Quilting Whenever" or something like that. I think my ddil stuck that in my little "arrangement" folder at the funeral home.

And we all know "she who dies with the most fabric is still dead so when is the yard sale".

And PS. I have seen a headstone with a grandmother's flwer garden etched into it. Very nice. I would rather have some nice words inscribed into the stone. Found a great grandmother's headstone in Mississippi. I did not know her so it meant so much to me to read "A tender mother and a faithful friend."

With all the beautiful tracing they are doing on headstones today, why not a quilt pattern? My dad's has the planes he flew in Viet Nam eched into his. Why can I have a quilt square? I would like the "Road to Arkansas" please.

The quilt shop in Michigan had an usual request. Someone came in and wanted 3 blocks quilted in their favorite quilt patterns to in lay on top of the coffin. The lady was 90 years young and wanted to quilt the top herself. I thought that was a little strange.

maybe not the headstone, but you can sew your own casket lining after you have made yout own casket.
Seems you should be able to finish the job and do the headstone too.

On 2nd thought...no thanks. that's too creepy.

GREAT!

This reminds me of a scene from the 18th century novel Clarissa by Samuel Richardson. Clarissa is a young lady who is supposed to be more or less perfect, including her beauty, education and accomplishments such as playing the harpsichord and needlework. Fast-forward to about 1400 pages later, when she has been through some extremely nasty experiences and is dying of anorexia. She orders her coffin in advance, and keeps it in her room to use as a desk and occasionally rest on. This freaks everyone out. What freaks them out even more is that she has ordered the coffin to be covered with these highly elaborate designs. When people nervously ask her why, she says, "Oops, I'm so used to doing my embroidery designs, I got a bit carried away."

So someone thought of something very similar about 270 years ago!

It made me chuckle... thought you might enjoy it too...

Have a good one!! GO USA!!!!!

Oh no!! Now I'm going to have to try and figure out how to quilt my headstone!! LOL

Qwiltylady 07-19-2011 11:01 AM

lol

Tinabug 07-19-2011 11:18 AM

Well now, this is an interesting topic!

penski 07-19-2011 01:22 PM

haha !!

JanieH 07-19-2011 01:23 PM

My first thought when I started this topic is how we are all encouraged to make a label for our quilts! Guess this is a way to label ourselves!

Pinkiris 07-19-2011 01:36 PM

There ARE such things as wooden quilts (google it and see!). All we need are stone masons to get interested in quilting and we're set!

I don't see anything wrong with a headstone cozy, except you'd have to ok it with the cemetery. They certainly don't have to mow around it!

My sister has instructions that when I pass this mortal coil, instead of spending money on flowers for my casket, it will be draped with my Memory Quilt. Flanking my casket will be the quilt my grandmother made for me, the one my mother made for me, our Anniversary quilt (50 years) and whatever ones I prize dearly and will then be passed on to our son and his wife and our grandchildren. I want a Christian burial, but there are some quilting things I want put in also.

I am not quite looking forward to this day, yet, but I used to work in a florist shop and I don't really want blown roses or old flowers for decorations! Send me a plant that will live for a while!!!!! It's not going to do me any good but it may be a remembrance for someone else (not that I am that memorable), but it is such a waste (altmii (at least to me it is). But I did love the idea of the coffin quilt. Edie

A little off the subject, but I just repotted the fern my x-FIL got while in the hospital before his death in 1985. My DD, his granddaughter, is moving into a new home and her grandma wanted it saved.

if you all keep talking about headstone quilts, I'm going to have to find some colored tiles and see what I can do
