Hey there quilters... My sister gave me a little calendar with a daily quilt moment... A few days ago this was the daily quilty saying:

"Apparently, you can't quilt your own headstone. If you could, a quilter would have already figured out how and e-mailed the steps to everyone she knows."

It made me chuckle... thought you might enjoy it too...

Have a good one!! GO USA!!!!!

  Good one~!

MisDixie 07-17-2011 10:58 AM

LOL, good one. There was a magazine out a few years ago that had an article on 'coffin quilts' with pictures and all, so I am sure the headstone will be next.

VickyS 07-17-2011 10:59 AM

Good one! Thanks for the smile today :)

Seems to me to be do-able. Buy a flat headstone, buy outdoor tiles in assorted colors. Cut as you would fabric and glue (or whatever) to the flat headstone. You may have to have lettering cut for the names and date. or you could do the "quilt" on the back.

wolfkitty 07-17-2011 12:31 PM

Patterns could be cut into the squares cut into the headstone. Seems doable to me!

frauhahn 07-17-2011 03:41 PM

Actually, when my sister died many years ago, my bil had a quilt etched into the headstone. So-it isn't too far off. . .

alikat110 07-17-2011 08:04 PM

LOL

fabric whisperer 07-17-2011 08:45 PM

thanks for the giggle... I may make one just to tease my family... then they just have to add the dates (hopefully many many years from now)

MadQuilter 07-17-2011 08:53 PM

Hm, I wonder if there are any urns with quilt patterns?

earthwalker 07-17-2011 09:52 PM

:)My son works as a Monumental Mason...they will put anything you want on a headstone. Recently a customer brought in an antique stove front which he wanted incorporated into a chapel for his wife's grave. The boys thought it was a bit odd at first. One made a comment that she couldn't leave the kitchen even once departed. The guy explained his wife was crazy about antiques, especially stoves and this was a portion of a really unusual find. I have seen ledgers (the flat top which goes over the gravesite, made to look like a bed with the covers folded back. Don't see why you couldn't do a quilt with mosaics.

You may be referring to 'going away' quilts the older ppl had in their coffins. These were made by family. Daddy asked me to make one for him before he passed. I did and many yrs later I made one for Mama as well. Probably the hardest thing I ever had to do but it was done in love and with deep respect...... Has anyone on here ever done that for someone you love?

My sister has instructions that when I pass this mortal coil, instead of spending money on flowers for my casket, it will be draped with my Memory Quilt. Flanking my casket will be the quilt my grandmother made for me, the one my mother made for me, our Anniversary quilt (50 years) and whatever ones I prize dearly and will then be passed on to our son and his wife and our grandchildren. I want a Christian burial, but there are some quilting things I want put in also.

I am not quite looking forward to this day, yet, but I used to work in a florist shop and I don't really want blown roses or old flowers for decorations! Send me a plant that will live for a while!!!!! It's not going to do me any good but it may be a remembrance for someone else (not that I am that memorable), but it is such a waste (altmii (at least to me it is). But I did love the idea of the coffin quilt. Edie

when my brother past away last year and they were doing the headstone. they had a tractor engraved over his name as he was a farmer and a quilt block was engraved over my sIL's name. looks very nice.

#1piecemaker 07-18-2011 03:50 AM

Too funny!!!

SEW 07-18-2011 04:05 AM

You actually probably could quilt your headstone. My FIL was an artist and when he passed away, My mother had one of his drawings laser etched into the headstone. It was very neat!

I have seen other pictures put on a headstone..ie: a truck, tractor, farm spread, portrait photo...I think it would be a wonderful idea to put a favorite quilt block on it. {or picture of a vintage machine if you are a collector..now is the time to plan ahead}

Longarm 07-18-2011 04:40 AM

What is the name of the calendar? I think that sounds like a great item for my sewing room.

I have had different day ones in the past, Maxine was a favorite, and she sometimes made me LOL when I changed the date.

Saw a headstone in (our) Pisgah Cemetary:

Hee, hee, a good chuckle!

CLMQuilter 07-18-2011 06:00 AM

I thought of an Idea have a head stone that says here lays a Quilter with a slot in the top that says deposit fabric and tools here. lol

Wunder-Mar 07-18-2011 06:05 AM

 - this has already gone out to the three guilds I belong to ...

THANKS FOR THE LAUGH - I am actually almost out the door on my way to a funeral of a dear (quilting) friend.

Favorite Fabrics 07-18-2011 06:22 AM

How 'bout...

Just get a simple rectangular headstone.

Quilt yourself some removable covers for it.

Maybe... one for each season. Then in your will, whoever gets most of your remaining $$ (what you haven't spent on fabric) has to go and change the cover each season.

Might guarantee you three "visits" the first year, at least...

And the covers of course will be washable.

And unique!

grannyQ 07-18-2011 06:22 AM

On our headstone's, we had them engrave quilt blocks by my name and a barn & silo on my DH. It look's quite nice.

Edie 07-18-2011 06:31 AM

I think it is the epitome of respect and love for the one who has died. I would love people to know that I loved quilting when I was alive - I will be buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with my husband and they have just white headstones - Edie

Sneed 07-18-2011 06:49 AM

Did you all see the quilted PT Cruiser in the Sisters, OR show? I suppose if you can make a car cover, a headstone should be a snap.

jaymemade 07-18-2011 07:08 AM

Funny!

Tweety2911 07-18-2011 07:17 AM

LOL :-)

teacherbailey 07-18-2011 09:06 AM

I wonder if you could make a quilted cover for a headstone and then spray it heavily with acrylic to weatherproof????

Cyn 07-18-2011 09:15 AM

:) :) :)

Hmmmm... maybe this would be a good time to try those new laminated fabrics?

Sharonsews 07-18-2011 11:30 AM

I have to try something once someone says "It can't be done." Makes me want to look into what the others have said with tile. What about making a mini quilt with a plastic cover over it set into the headstone? What about etching? It would be expensive but I am worth it! Especially if I pay for it before I go. :) Now I have something ELSE to think of in the back of my mind.

Stitchnripper 07-18-2011 11:33 AM

And I was thinking, well, make a quilt, and encase it in plexiglass and use that as the headstone. Where do I come up with these things???

suezq 07-18-2011 11:48 AM

Great saying. I would do exactly what was done so everyone I know who would be making that important decision would know exactly what I want on my headstone.

sueisallaboutquilts 07-18-2011 11:57 AM

This is hilarious!! But I think I'll pass LOL LOL :D
